Re: NBA 2K18 Offensive Tendencies, AI Execution & Motion Blog From Da_Czar

I will never understand why 2K is willing to invest so much time and effort into the AI and subtle nuances of the game. But we are two weeks from release and the only gameplay the developers allow to be shown is shaky cell phone video of players sprinting up and down the court throwing the ball into the lane and hoping for an easy basket.

Even the video posted yesterday is recorded with two "All-Time" teams, with inflated player ratings, the exclusion of Czars brand new flow tech technology and a USER who runs very few plays and seems to have limited knowledge of the game. These videos do not do the dev team and their efforts justice.

They should allow Czar to release a video of a game played with the following criteria:

    - Current NBA teams
    - Played against the CPU (Superstar or HOF)
    - Broadcast camera (They've added a new broadcast cam, and we haven't seen it yet)
    - Played in a SIM manner with free-lance offense, half-court sets, attention to the defensive end, etc

and the 2nd part of the playcall questionis the dynamic plays or plays selected for a player like clarkson PnR, I know these plays come from the playbook, however how are the plays selected? Are the selected based on the player's attributes? or randomly selected from his assigned plays?

Dynamic plays and smart plays are different. If you call a smart play before half-court you should still get a play from the playbook.

If you call for a smart play after half-court and there is one available for the key player they system tries to find a freelance play first then if an action can't be found for that player in that set it reverts to a play from the playbook.

Dynamic plays are the plays that appear when you press d-pad left ( was LB last year) and they are based on ACE playcalling.

Play selection logic was written before I arrived and we still use that logic.

The more info is known, the more the users will be able to fit the game into their own views. I know you know, but to many of us, being granted more customization, editing and options is a big of a staple of the franchise as providing a sim approach ... but many times we are tasked with trying to descipher what variables interact on a given scenario and how those variables are weighted or chained together, and is a HUGE task, if only we had more info (not only for editing purposes but for understanding gameplay related outcomes) ... then again, it makes one really appreciate what some custom rosters can achieve without such specific knowledge.

I know that there must be some intellectual property info that needs to be kept but surely not most of it and ultimately would say that definitively understand that of development nature and not as much that of roster editing.

        Anyways, THANKS, again and again.

Yeah, but this is an open forum and why would I want to help the competition possible figure out how to do something they may not have solved.

I probably give you guys too much info already considering that anyone can read and study the responses.

There is a lot of sweat and thought equity that goes into creating and maintaining these highly detailed systems. Why help someone figure out how to replicate that ?

          For example :

after timeout i changed squad to small ball and go on a run is Ai going to react to that with their own small ball too or something to stop me?

Sub logic is separate from ACE right now. Combing those systems is a huge task which is why it has not been done yet.

We are closer than anything else i have seen out there. It's about the coordination of several different systems that may not currently be operating off the same exact information or format.

Video-games are built on several different systems usually built by different producers and engineers.

In a single "play" you may have to interact with 2-* different systems. That is why troubleshooting is not always straight forward.

If there is a team full of low touches/usage/shot tendencies, are we SURE those players will fall into one of those categories? (Ball Mover, Screener, Shot Makers, etc........)

I just want to be clear on that

Not easy to answer, there are many variables. Depends on current tempo, ace play or freelance preference, players on the floor, freelance action coverage in comparision with skills of players on the floor, Ball location etc.

The systems we put in "should" make that better but you could hit some combination of the above that we didn't anticipate.

You also could be using an edited roster that screws with my back-end systems and suddenly no one is qualifying as what I set them up to qualify for.

When you allow users to edit as much stuff as we do it creates a monstrous amount of work to cover the what if scenarios. That is why other sports games usually won't offer anything close to the user customization that we do. But that comes with an obvious cost.

If I tightly control all the variables it takes much less time to deliver a well controlled end product.

Just re-read the end of your question. At worst you would have a team full of ball-movers on the floor and as long as there is a shot-clock someone will be forced to score at some point.

No, these archetypes are not visible anywhere in the game where you would see. It only really exists in code.

That's not how guys like Steve Nash worked in his prime Phoenix days. Will 2K ever be able to replicate his style of play in the PnR vs other naturally fast guys without having to abuse Turbo to do so?

I think so, it will take us starting to focus on fundamental movement on both sides of the ball, OG and I discuss this often and have many Ideas on how to do just that. But many systems need to be brought in line with that fundamental focus.

I can definitely see a path to it just not sure what that time-line would even look like. So, yes I believe it is possible. Lots of work between here and there.
