                March Madness

                First Round Notes:

#7 Indiana came back from a 10 point halftime deficit against #10 Clemson, led by Freshman Forward Joshua O’Gallagher, who finished the night with 33 points (23 in the 2nd half) including a stretch of 9 unanswered in the 4th quarter.

#8 Arizona knocks off #9 USC on a last second shot to seal the win 74-72. The shot was made by freshman forward Michael Greene, who ended the game with 23 points and 7 rebounds.

#11 Iowa State upsets #6 Butler 66-65 behind a strong showing from Sophomore Forward Colton Blake, who hit the go ahead 3pt shot with 12.2 seconds remaining. Blake had 22 points and hit 5 3-pointers. Butler sophomore forward Patrick Holloway missed the game winning shot as time expired.

Another upset in the West bracket saw #10 LSU take down #7 Purdue. The trio of LSU big-men hounded Purdue C K.J. Warren all-night, and he saw consistent double teams. Warren ended with 16 points and 12 rebounds in the loss and after the game posted on twitter “@NBA here I come #nbadraft”.

#11 Alabama upset #6 UNLV in the Midwest bracket. The lethal pick-n-roll combo from Smokey Freeman to Martin Whittington was too much for the Runnin’ Rebels.

#10 Oklahoma squeaks by #7 Houston. Sooner freshman forward Rudy Baker caught fire in the 2nd half, knocking down 5 of 6 threes and scored a game high 29 points. Houston freshman PG Jarran Terry had 26 points in the loss.

                Second Round Notes:

The big upset of this round was #7 seed Pittsburg beating #2 seed Duke. Pitt Freshman guard Reggie Wheeler completely shut down Victor Marsh this game and showed off his talent on the defensive end and how much of an impact it can have. Marsh was the 6th leading scorer in the nation and #1 3pt shooter and was held to just 7 points on 3-15 shooting (1-8 3pt).

The upsets continue in the Midwest bracket with #11 Alabama beating #3 Missouri 68-64. Smokey Freeman had 22 points and 11 assists and Forward Martin Whittington had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Crimson Tide. Algernon Ingram had 18 points in the loss for Missouri.

#6 Washington defeated last year’s finals loser #3 UCONN 74-66. Lucas Baxter led the way for the Huskies with 28 points and 8 rebounds.

#4 Temple held off last year’s national champion #5 Gonzaga 71-65. Both teams from last year’s national championship game get eliminated in the second round this year. Freshman PG J.D. Miles shined again, this time putting up 31 points and 5 assists.

                              Scouting Report

                              Top 5 Projected:

                              Desmond Knox – PF/C – Maryland (Freshman)
Knox is a 6’11 PF/C combo, he’s one of the 5 that could go #1 in the draft. He was 5th in PPG and 2nd in RPG. He plays both ends of the floor well, and has a ton of upside, along with the fact that his game should translate well into the NBA. Has a really good post-fade shot, and handles the ball really well.

                              K.J. Warren – C- Purdue (Junior)
Warren went through some struggles during his Junior year, but the 6’11 Center is considered a potential #1 pick in this draft. He was 4th in scoring and 3rd in rebounds, and was 4th in blocks. He’s an all-around center that plays D, grabs boards and can hits shots, probably the best inside scorer in the draft.

Laron Hudson – PG – UCLA (Sophomore)
Hudson is a 6’4 PG from UCLA, 1st team All-American and PAC 12 tournament MVP. He led the nation in assists and was 10th in scoring. He can shoot 3’s, he can drive, he can pass, and he can play D. He could be the “safest” pick at #1, but might have a lower ceiling than the others.

                              Aris Giannou – SG/SF/PF – Greece (20 years old)
Giannou might be the most intriguing prospect in this year’s draft, and some scouts think he should go #1. He’s 6’8 and played SG-SF-PF for his team in Greece. He’s a good defender, can handle the ball, and score. His one knock is his range, which will need some work once he arrives in the NBA, might be the quickest player in the draft while handling the rock.

                              J.D. Miles – PG – Temple (Freshman)
Miles went from unknown prospect, not on anyone’s draft radar to potential #1 pick in this year’s draft. He scored in bunches for the Owl’s and some might be concerned with the level of competition throughout the year. He did put up 33 points against Kansas during March Madness, he led the nation in PPG and was 5th in 3pt%, and also led the nation in FT%.

                              Top 6 – 10

Leon Mercer – SG – Louisville (Freshman)
Mercer is a 6’7 SG that is at his best when he’s cutting to the basket. Needs to improve on other areas of his game (Defense and shooting) but has some upside and is a good athlete. Scouts clocked him as the 2nd fastest player in the draft, and with the best vertical jump.

Chris Long – PF – UCLA (Sophomore)
Long played in the pick-n-roll offense quite a bit with his UCLA counterparts, Long can finish at the rim and knock down open jump shots, he also has 3pt range.

Cody Briggs – PG – Clemson (Freshman)
Briggs might hustle better than anyone else in this class, he also has really good ball handling skills but needs to improve on his passing accuracy especially for a point guard. Can knock down open shots.

                              Ruben Navarro – PF/SF – Spain (19 years old)
Navarro played both the 3 & 4 spots for his international team, and does most of his scoring from inside, scouts rave about his unstoppable hook shot.

Wesley Howard – SF – Kentucky (Freshman)
Howard will knock down open shots consistently from anywhere on the court. His draft stock rose with his ability to play such good defense, he contests shots really well without fouling, and guards against the pick-n-roll really good. He’s a good on ball defender that doesn’t get beat off the dribble too often.

                              Top 11 – 20

Brendan Starks – SF – Kansas (Junior)
Starks took a bit of a backseat to other more talented scorers for Kansas this season, but he can hit open 3’s when needed and plays good defense. Could fill a need for a team looking for a 3 and D type of player.

Latrell Burton – C- Missouri (Junior)
Burton is a low post threat on offense and defense. He will protect the rim for you and can score inside.

Treven Bennett – PG – UCLA (Senior)
Treven Bennett was part of the 2-PG backcourt for UCLA this year with Laron Hudson, Bennett has great hands and is a great passer, doesn’t wow anyone with his scoring ability, but can be a traditional pass 1st point for an offense.

                              Terrence Battle – C – UNLV (Freshman)
Battle is a quality rebounder that can score inside, he has potential and that’s what will get him drafted in the mid-1st round, but he’s a bit of a project still.

Seth Murphy – PF – Texas (Junior)
Murphy, the 6’10 PF from Texas is a stretch-4. He’s one of the best 3 point shooters when left alone, also knocks down open-mid range shots with ease.

Jake Hendricks – PG – UNC (Senior)
Hendricks was a 3rd team All-American for UNC and was 5th in the nation in steals. He knows what it takes to set the tempo for an offense and plays defense. He won’t take over a game with scoring but does the little things well that helps teams win games.

Martin Whittington – PF – Alabama (Junior)
Whittington excelled playing alongside PG Smokey Freeman in the pick-n-roll offense, he’s an athletic 6’10 PF with great dunking ability, great vertical, good speed for his size, and possibly the best hands in the draft.

Reggie Wheeler – SG – Pitt (Freshman)
Wheeler has shown that he is an elite perimeter defender, quite possibly the best in the draft, needs to work on the offensive end, (can hit some open 3’s) but his NBA calling card will be his defense. Locked down some elite scorers during the season and in the NCAA tournament. Moves really well laterally, good and picking pockets and guards the pick-n-roll like a pro.

Telvin Tyler – SG – Wake Forest (Freshman)
Tyler is an undersized SG at 6’3, but is athletic and can score in bunches. Wake Forest had a down year, and Tyler didn’t receive too much attention due to that, but he’s a great 3 point shooter, he is one of the fastest players in the draft, doesn’t lose speed while handling the ball, and has the 2nd highest vertical in the draft. Plays pretty good on-ball defense as well.

Kenneth Pruitt – PF – Florida (Freshman)
Pruitt played mainly PF but could slide over and play SF if needed due to his athleticism. Pruitt led the nation in blocks, and has great instincts on defense and moves really well laterally to keep him in front of defenders. He won’t be out hustled either.

                              Other Notables:

Zeshon Graham – SF – Georgetown (Senior)
Graham was a 4-year starter at Georgetown, and solidified his 1st round draft consideration with a stellar senior season. He was a 2nd team All-American and the Big East Tournament MVP. He averaged 18.8 PPG. He does most of his scoring inside of 15 feet, and has a nice post fade shot. Scouts also mentioned how strong he was which helps him bully smaller wings inside.

Lucas Baxter – PF – Washington (Senior)
Baxter was the offense this year for Washington; he has a good inside game and can hit open mid-range shots.

Smokey Freeman – PG – Alabama (Senior)
Freeman excels in the pick-n-roll game where he can find his mid-range shots. Freeman also has be really good post fade which you don’t see too much anymore from PG’s.

Victor Marsh – SG – Duke (Senior)
Marsh, had a disappointing end to his career at Duke (losing in the 2nd round of the tournament) but he still had an excellent year. He finished the year 1st in 3pt% and 8th in scoring. Might end up as just a role-player, but scouts say he’s the best 3pt shooter in the draft.

                              D.D. Patterson – SF – Michigan (Senior)
Patterson is a 6’9 SF/PF with a unique skill set. A few scouts described him as a crafty point power forward. He’s really good at drawing fouls (let the nation in FT attempts), has great handles and can finish at the rim, and also has excellent passing IQ.

Jon Holland – C- Illinois (Senior)
Holland is the best rebounder in the draft, he led the nation in rebounds and scouts rave about his technique boxing out opponents and his tenacity on both ends of the floor grabbing rebounds, he’s also the strongest player in the draft.
