All-around isn't a bad play style to go with either.
I've done athletic, and that was fun, but the games got pretty dull. My only offense came on fast breaks and offensive rebounds. All I could do was dunk. Even with all my athleticism, I could hardly beat anyone off the dribble. Ended up quitting halfway through the 1st half of my second season because I couldn't get good play from my teammates no matter what or where I played.
Started an all-around shooting guard not too long ago, and it's pretty fun. I spent most of my early points from the first season on my mid range, layup, 3 point, pass, and dribble pull up ability. Started the second season with 100,000 points all from the playoffs basically, and spent those all on my athleticism, to just get that out of the way now.
You can basically go any direction you choose with an all-around player. All of your abilities are average except for the post moves, but play about 5 or 6 games and you'll have enough to bring one of those abilities up. Your athleticism is pretty weak to start off with, but it's serviceable. I played the majority of my first season with everything at or near default in the athleticism section.
I'd say if you're ever undecided on what type of player you want your guy to be, go with an all-around type player because of the versatility going forward. Sure the athletic points cost a handsome amount, but with the poor ability ratings the athletes start out with, I'd say it about evens out.
