"Destiny laughs at Probabilities"... the beginning of something legendary?
For me to interview a high school he's got to be special so for me to sit down with a 15 year old must mean we are dealing with a very special player. For two years the university of Cincinatti was the home of one of the best college players ever. Years later a 15 year old kid sits across from me creating more hype for himself than his father did. He's unusually intelligent, interesting and a bit odd honestly.... he is Christopher Bishop Jr.
Sapp: Your mother made a special request that I talk to you saying that the world needed to know who the real Chris Bishop Jr is. Is it true that you didn't want to do this.
Bishop Jr.: Yes, that's correct.
Sapp: Why?
Bishop Jr.: I have seen what the media does to people in this position. I don't know if I'm quite ready to embrace the things that come with being a celebrated amateur athlete.
Sapp: It's a bit late for that though don't you think. You don't have much of a choice at this point.
Bishop Jr: Everyone has a choice. I don't have to play basketball.
Sapp: Then why do you?
Bishop Jr.: *stares blankly* I don't know. It's something that I've done since I could hold a basketball...... Maybe it's fate... destiny? I don't know. Do you believe in that?
Sapp: I really didn't expect to go down this kind of road today. I just planned to talk basketball with you.
Bishop Jr.: Aren't we though?
Sapp: I guess you're right. And I guess to answer your question I do believe in "destiny".
Bishop Jr.: I think I do too. And maybe it's my destiny to be one of the greats.... one of the best basketball players to ever play the game.
Sapp: Do you think you're that good?
Bishop Jr.: Is that really a fair question to have a 15 year old?
Sapp: Well... I guess not. Let's talk about your father.... one of the greats to step on the court Christopher Bishop.
Bishop Jr.: Ok.
Sapp: What's the relationship between you two like.
Bishop Jr.: Borderline non-existant. But he's still my father and I love him.
Sapp: I'm honestly a little shocked to hear that. Do you mind speaking about that for a moment.
Bishop Jr.: My mother is giving you the evil eye over there so I think it would probably be best for both of us if we didn't get in to it. There is a time and a place for everything. I may discuss it in the future.
Sapp: I'm sorry I brought it up. How about your uncle Kareem Bishop.
Bishop Jr.: Uncle Reemy is great. I used to go to practice with him when he was at Cincy. He's invited me to several NBA games but I usually try to stay away from the spotlight. Prolonging the inevitable as long as possible.
Sapp: Yeah, it is definitely happening as we speak but I can respect that. So tell me this.... how does a fifteen year old score 47 points in a varsity high school game. You do understand how amazing that is right?
Bishop Jr.: I appreciate that. Basketball is however, just a game and I never over think it. I only take advantage of the opportunities that present itself on the court. Maybe my early success as a basketball player is attributed to the fact that I feel zero pressure to be anything other than what I am supposed to be. If I don't turn out to be this legendary Hall of Fame basketball player that everyone predicts it doesn't define who I am. I will still be Christopher Bishop Jr. I will still be me.
Sapp: Chris....
Bishop Jr.: Yes?
Sapp: What the hell is your IQ.
Bishop Jr.: My mom says it's pretty high but all mothers say that about their children right?
Sapp: Umm, yeah ok. So who's your favorite player at the moment
Bishop Jr.: My uncle of course. Oh yeah, and Whakil Blackshear. He's so dominant in every facet of the game but more importantly he makes everybody on his team better. *stares at the ceiling briefly*. Man, what if I end up on the same team with that guy one day.
Sapp: It's definitely possible. Let me ask a couple more questions before we call it quits. As a freshman, youre the top rated high school player in the land and every college wants you. Have you given any thought to where you want to go?
Bishop Jr.: Not even. Right now I'm just focused on high school. I've got a while before I have to make any decisions like that.
Sapp: Chris I would love to talk to you again when you're a high school senior. Needless to say life will be a bit more hectic for you at that time but I'm hoping you'll find time for me.
Bishop Jr.: You have my word that I will Mr. Sapp.
Sapp: Good luck in high school young man.
Bishop Jr.: Thank you sir.
