Live 09 - On the Spot (Gamespot)

    Link:

We bring you a special episode of On the Spot live from the EA Studio Showcase, where we get the latest scoop on Spore, Dead Space, Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, Battlefield Heroes, and more!

Fast forward to 78:00 minutes to see Live.

The practice gym looks great and its cool that you teammates will be shooting around with you while your in it.

I also like the shot timing indicator it seems pretty easy to understand. Just hold the button until the bar is completely filled. Much easier to understand then the one that is in 2K8.

Dunks and layups have definitely improved they look a lot more lifelike.

Looks like if you don't know what you're doing when pressuring the ball you'll get burned off the dribble.

The heck with the gym, did you see how the game went to the court, and the movement during the gameplay...just nice.

Guys, my sound card on my comp is acting crazy. Can anybody comment on how the commentary and stadium sounds were ?(if there were any)

One part of the vid I liked was when Wade was iso'd against Sczerbiak (i think). Seemed like Wally guessed right and sort of stopped Wade, but he looked like he was holding on for dear life and Wade still got into the paint and was able to make a little baby hook shot. The animations and the collision there just seemed right.

You can't hear the commentary because of the guy who's being interviewed.

I don't know how many times I've said this but I can't wait play this game myself. I really hate watching vids where the player doesn't run any plays makes the game seem more chaotic than it really is.

I can already see from this video I'm going to have a lot of fun just running plays and trying to find out all the different options in each play. It also seems like running plays will make scoring the ball easier, where as last year you could have the same amount of success scoring by freestyling as you did running plays.

Game looks great and looks like it plays great but there's still way too many dunks and super CPU PG's

Who says Live doesn't have nice net animation, check out Boobie's first shot after tip-off. SWISH!

Don't worry about super PG, the guy was playing Boobie is really bad...If you play this game right, you'll have tons of fun based on what I saw so far.

I agree, they need run plays! Or release the demo early so we can do it ourselves... lol

The guy was controlling the Heat. The Cavs was the CPU, which is why I brought up super PGs since the CPU was doing everything wtih him.

The Super PGs reeks of NBA Live 08. That is disappointing. Any little daylight they get, they're shooting the ball.

They really need to re-work the logic for PGs. I love what Live is showing, but this is disappointing.

Is it going to be the same as Live 08 where you can't play the PG on defense?

                    Damn.

                      Yup.

Looks just like last year, when all the cpu controlled pg's were in attack mode instead of trying to run the offense.

Didn't like the super PG. I hope it's not a problem. Other than that, the game looks like a good addition to have in my library. If my money is looking good when Live drops. I'll pick it up, if not its a definite rental.

If the player tendencies are driven by DNA, then "super PGs" are a thing of the past, regardless of what was going on in that video. From the interview, it sounds like the synergy sports numbers were the backbone for everything in Live 09.

                          Things I really like:

The pick & roll control - Hadn't seen this before, but the mechanic seems intuitive and if it works as advertised easily the best pick/screen mechanic (and much better than what was in NBA 2k8). I like having the choice between having the screener slip the screen, pop, or roll depending on what you as the ballhandler do.

NBA Academy - Been asking for this in basketball games for awhile, huge improvement over the standard worthless practice modes. A practice mode that teaches you the game, or at least provides a prompt to guide you through the core mechanics. what a novel idea.

                          Not Thrilled About:

                          Shooting/Net animations - Ugh.

"Feel" of the game - Personally Live 08 (demo) did nothing for me; zero, zip, nada. Shooting the ball and trying out quickstrike (not a fan) was fun enough, but the 5 on 5 was just not fun for me. Promo videos look like a different game but gameplay videos show some of the stuff that soured me on 08. Ultimately the demo will be key in shedding light on whether or not I make the switch to Live.

From what I was told, on the easy level, this game is not for sim gamers, so you may want to bump up the difficulty levels, but i'm going to check on the PG thing to see if its a thing of the past or not.

                              A couple of things:

1.) There is no super PG play in NBA LIVE 09.

In that video you see the manual defender move off of the PG Gibson who's a known 3 pt. shooter. He'll take that shot everytime in the real NBA if he's left open like that.

2.) We have different ways to play 1 on 1 defense this year. You can choose to engage the offensive player, or play off of him. If you engage and get into a jostle and the cpu wins that jostle and blows by you, he'll drive to the lane. He's just beaten you. The offensive gameplan is triggered if you're playing solid defense and don't make a mistake the minute the PG brings the ball up the court.
