Here's a video of Kobe walking through the exact shot I'm talking about. You'll notice that he talks about how his inside leg is the anchor for the shot. This means that he's not stopping, then gathering for the shot (which is what players have always done in video games), it means that he's gathering for the shot WHILE stopping himself at the same time. He's able to lift off the floor as soon as his other foot hits the ground. This is why he's able to pull up so quickly. It isn't two separate actions, it's all one fluid move. You'll also notice that he isn't leaning sideways or falling away. If you only watched the video from the moment his right foot hits the floor, you'd think it was just his normal jumpshot because he goes straight up and down. The only difference was the hard plant he made with his inside leg to stop himself and create space from the defender.
It takes a lot of agility to do this and is a more difficult shot than a normal jumper, but it's incredibly effective because you can use the defender's own momentum to create space for you. This is a tough move for even good defenders to adequately contest. The guys that can defend the drive and still contest this shot are elite defenders. Not only would having this move in the game benefit the offense, but it would help to differentiate the top notch perimeter defenders.
