I haven't played an EA NBA game since Live 2001 for PS2. I'm a huge Player-Lock guy and Live was the only option for it for many years. However, in 2002 and since, Live has forgotten about this mode and must have just not tested it.

There were a couple of years where the players wouldn't shoot the ball on their own, or they'd pass it back and forth between the guards until a shot clock violation would happen 100% of the time. I had to force them to do something else. It was not playable.

I gave up on basketball games until NBA 2K7, then 2K showed me a couple of decent ball games. However, in 2K10 the controls went to the crapper and I skipped it. I was really excited about the My Player mode which Live didn't have. Now I'm hearing Elite has that mode, but this is the first year? So it will probably be thrown in there and suck.

So for me, a basketball has got to be deep in statistics and association modes, and needs fantastic AI to work with my Player-lock type of play. The game also needs a decent create player mode, which last I checked, EAs sucked. And of course the controls need to be good, which I hear EA has been better than 2K, but overall, the whole package hasn't been there for either game the past year or more.

Both EA and 2K need better games in my opinion. I've been off the EA bandwagon for a while, but 2K is going for show more than play.

Only because their far ahead of the competition in terms of graphics that doesn't automatically mean that they're neglecting the gameplay for the visual fluff.

On-topic: I think what would give me more confidence in Elite is that the dev-team should lock themselves up for 2 years straight and work without the interruption of a full release in between.
Just force a release because the first(!) iteration of two new major features is finished seems rushed to me. It seems that they couldn't even concentrate on other highly important aspects like game logic and team AI while 2k seems to have made major strides there for now. Then pull in the total neglect of all the animation stuff.

Basically what EA could do to get me onboard again would be a significant change of marketing strategy. I remember the pro-hop-step-fiasco in Live 2004. The game went into a good direction but agains the CPU the gameplay consisted mainly of trying to prevent the AI from abusing the hop-step. It got me annoyed after only a few months of play. This seems to be a common theme for EA games that they concentrate so much on 1 or 2 new features that they somehow fail to putting it all together. It mainly blame that on the 1-year release cycle and the seemingly constant change of direction with their games.

Im very excited to try out this new shooting system with Elite because its long overdue. Shooting is my favorite part of basketball, its something that I enjoy doing by myself when I go to the park or gym and nobody is there to play a pick up game. Im so glad that someone finally decided to focus on that aspect of basketball. I felt like shooting got an upgrade in looks but took a downgrade in control when sig shots came about.

Ive been a 2k fan since dreamcast, and I this year Im more excited to play Elite. I've been discussing shooting and ways to improve it on the 2k wishlist forums for the past 3 or so years, but I felt like my suggestions were falling on deaf ears. Good to see that EA is trying something different and moving forward.

They can bring you back they just have to fix the silly robotic player movement. I'm pretty sure if the animations were top notch the past 2 years most guys would have been in hoops heaven.

Not defending it because the product has slipped IMO but i think a more realistic animation system would have made Live 09 or 10 a great product.

As for 2k10 i agree i never played their games that much until last year myself. I love the way the AI just acts like a real b-ball player on the floor at times. They do some pretty cool stuff out there on the floor and it doesn't look robotic or boring after 1-2 months.

But i still think Live/Elite if only they had done a better job with player movements/Animations would have been more addicting to play.

I don't think it's even close this year between the two but hey maybe Elite 11 will shock the world next month.
