Great post. It goes back to what I use to say how realism sells a game. If you walk into a store and you see a game that looks like the real NBA then thats the game people are going to flock to. It might take some time with product loyalty and you might have to lower the price to convince people but in time the more realistic looking game will corner the market. If EA didn't have stiff comp they might be able to market playability and gameplay while rounding out the 'look' in time. They might be able to slow play the RTP so everything thats implemented looks and feels close to Backbreaker in the sense that physical interactions have some mathematical bounds with bodies that bend like real people.
EA why after 5 years can't we get improved animations?

Re: EA why after 5 years can't we get improved animations?
Gotta also agree, the controls and player interaction based on the real time physics look OK, but if this is your most highly regarded and marketed addition it needs to look more then OK.
At times on the court it just looks like the offensive player and defensive players are in two different realities. I'm not sure how to explain it, there's just no offensive-defensive action-reaction going on, no hand-checks, bumps, cutting off of the ball handler. It seems as if it's two separate games going on, the ball handler does a stiff cross-over, around the back, double cross, and the defender is looking out into the distance hunched over and occasionally sliding and once in awhile leaping out of the air for a late block attempt, if this is your new physics engine it's not doing it for me.
The reason your seeing this is the because of the lack of 2 man animations. it's those animations that allow the players on the court to look like their paying attention to what one another is doing. For some reason though, ea decided to remove these in order to give us "total control." They acted like two man animations was this horrible thing that all sports gamers hated, but the truth is, there is nothing wrong with those types of animations as long as there's a way to branch or break out of them when you need to. This is why the players look like they're in two different worlds. if ea had a decent rtp engine they could make up for the lack of 2 man animations and animations in general, but obviously they don't.Comment

Re: EA why after 5 years can't we get improved animations?
THey have been the control champions for sometime now. This was almost redundant. Especially since not even the supporters feel the implementation of RTP looks anywhere as good as they hyped it up to be. In fact if they didn't tell you it was in the game I doubt many would look at that and say wow that is revolutionary contact right there, is that a new engine ?
its also because of 2k. those dudes are playing 2k just like we are. best believe it. i had both games and so do they. dont think otherwise czar.
truth be told 2k's biggest downfall are those canned animations is it not? it was not lives BIGGEST Issue. atleast not yet it wasn't. sure they had it in their games as well. but it wasn't so bad like 2k to the point where you felt like you were just the coach cause the cpu was basically controlling your guys moves. i mean the fact that you had to tap the trigger buttons to perform extra dribble moves was wack also. we all know this. we're like how are you the first ones with the shot stick but the last ones with a true dribble handle stick? didn't make sense right?
live tried to jump and surpass 2k. because like Wang told us when he jumped ship and spilled the beans. 2k was not rebuilt for this next gen system. all they did was port it over. or some form of that. unlike live with its new engine. in addition wang also said, Now this is wang talking not I. not a 2k *****. i'm playing My player as we speak. LOL. i sold my live cause i stop playing it cause it wasn't a good game TO ME. see peopel thnk i'm a fanboy. not here. i'm a realist. So, wang told us what? he told us that all 2k can do year after year was.... Add....... ANimations. isn't that what he said? Yes it is.
2k had EA beat in the animations dept for 2 years now. and they have filled up their drives with so many animations. to the point where EA has to say "we dont want their to be an Animations Arms Race" of course you dont russia.. i mean EA. cause you will get nuked in that category. rocky "you cant win" but here's the kicker. EA is on to something with RTP. since they cant beat em. FORGET joining them. they tried that with wang. They are trying to get the jump on them with RTP. i'm telling you czar if this demo produces like the Devs think it will. "wait until you feel it for yourself". guys like you and me, other simmers. we will be thinking Uh oh 2k. time to get to the RTP fellas. and you have to wonder if their management is willing to "JOIN EM" even though they are "beating them" at the moment. let that marinate for a moment folks. dont reply until you've undestood every point made here guys/gals.
and last but not least. what Wang needs to do is stop bouncing back n forth from company to company. instead of going back to 2k. he should've jumped both ships and went over to the guys that made Backbreaker. now tell me what would've happened? he would've been given the reins to make the "BEST BASKETBALL SIM EVER" and guess what they are working with over there? some kind of RTP and they have solid graphics. now football aint hoop. so thats something to think about but still.Comment

Ya crazy. my boys had the early 2ks. they were weak games. yes they had some NICE ideas. like most brand new Games with good devs. but it took them years to get it right. and by the time they got it right. they also had to pull a live and sacrafice gameplay aka simball for $$$$$.Comment

do you really wanna know why they went with RTP? not just because it worked with hockey and baseball and somewhat boxing(controls), twoods.

Ea had to do something cause they probably knew that they could not beat 2k in animations. That is what made 2k 2k and not really gameplay. This is not talking about those who like 2k cause some people like 2k better cause of that.
With the dev saying they had to sacrifice things like animations or whatever his exact words was to me is saying that they are giving 2k the animations but they will try and make their gameplay in the game the bestComment

Re: EA why after 5 years can't we get improved animations?
. Ea asked for wishlist/surveys after their games got crushed rating-wise since 06, and basically ignored them. They dont know what the people want. Im sure noone asked for new controls for 11. If anything it was fixing gameplay, adding animations, and adding presentation.
Boy when 1st month sales roll in. Those EA suits are going to be crying possibly.Last edited by noshun; 09-03-2010, 10:15 PM.NBA Live is the epitome of Cancel Culture..

Re: EA why after 5 years can't we get improved animations?
That post has a ton of holes in it which I dont care to try to refute right now but please dont come in here trying to justify this game being on this generation the entire time and the animations are more beat up than Tina Turner was.
Its just silly to go on about 2k when this is the series struggling with animations, with fans, and with sales.
Its patheticComment

But imo they needed to save their basketball franchise. You can argue that they could have did other things to try and save it but thats what they decided to do cause like you said they ignore wishlists. Proabably 7 out of 10 people that i personal know has switched to 2k and most reasons are basically cause 2k looks better. Thats why imo they changed from live.
I like the direction they are going in but to me they didnt have to make such drastic changes like changing the name and im still confused as to why they did that.
You can argue the fact that they ignored the consumers but i just really beleived that they threw in the towel with animations so to speak even though they are not horrible to make what they believe is better gameplay

You lost all cred there. For their time the early 2k hoops games were phenomenal. 2k1-2k3 were free of many of the issues that future 2k basketball and NBA Live games experience. A lot of 2k10's faults could have been alleviated by simply going back their roots. There was a time when 2k's gameplay out-shun the animations. 2k1-2k3 and the College Hoops games had gameplay down strong. Now it looks like they are getting back to the balance they had in the past that. 2kfanatic was right. The early 2k hoops games were the "sim" games of the franchise.Last edited by Kaanyr Vhok; 09-03-2010, 10:37 PM.Comment

Re: EA why after 5 years can't we get improved animations?
When you have enough complaints about people saying "oh i hate how i lose control in a canned animation" it sends the wrong message to these developers. Thats why i say sometimes people wont enjoy what they wanted when they get it.Comment

Re: EA why after 5 years can't we get improved animations?
Yeah the animations in this series really needs to improve and it is a shame that it hasn't. If I was still a loyal fan of the series I would be pretty upset. But it is disappointing. I'm glad there are other basketball gaming options.Comment

Re: EA why after 5 years can't we get improved animations?
I can say that the lack of consistency on a dev team is partly to blame. I'm not excusing them from this though, it's been a major gripe by all of us for years. I'm hopeful that because of this foundation in Elite 11, animations and such can be built on for next year. I think this should be the MAJOR focus for next year.Comment

nah, its just misinterpreted the wrong way. I honestly don't blame this on any of the devs. What mike wang said in that interview makes me believe there is politics involved and the suits are who are making the game suffer.
