The hole is not that deep!!! I think 2k is missing a chance to put EA in a deep hole...

Total control over your player is the one thing that has been severely lacking in the last three versions of the game, IMO. The last game I truly enjoyed from 2K Sports, sans the frustration, was College Hoops 08.

There has been many praises sung about the game as you've eluded to, but personally, with all the bugs and other numerous issues going on with the game, I was never on board with the accolades. And this is coming from a long time fan of the NBA 2K series (since it first started on the PS2, to be exact).
Not that I'm a huge basket ball fan but I feel the same, NBA2k feels scripted, to the point that it's obvious, score 10 or 15 points in a row and gain a lead? Be prepared to all of a sudden miss wide open shots all over and watch the CPU drop rain even with good coverage. Awesome presentation but that really only goes so far.

If others feel the need to go on about 2k's game here again, expect there to be bans handed out.

As would I. I'd love to see "something" out of the EA camp.

Elite 11 was a big dissapointment though I hope EA Tiburon gets it right this time, They should already have an idea of what the fans want.
I don't know man. Tiburon has known what fans want in Madden and has yet to deliver.

I wouldn't think they are as far along as folks would hope. Technically, they are a good developer. But with the mass exodus recently, that HAD to put a huge dent in their schedule. Right now, the only way I see them recovering from this is to hire a bunch of bodies to get some stuff done. Some compromises will have to be made somewhere. So, I would hold expectations in check for the time being.

we can only hope that is true...

best decision they could make, especially with the animations. their games still had a basic cartoonish feel while animating. never brought them up to ps3/xbox360 level of smooth animations. elite animations were comparable to bball games of several years prior.

ea has other games where players move smoothly, so they have the ability to do so for live/elite..

hopefully they get basics right for 13, then following their 3 yr plan(lol),
                        they are competitive by 15...

if all goes south again, marketing can claim "we're twice as good as we were.
WE are now introducing our new super 6 yr plan"

It does not matter how many years of development they have if they go into the next game with the same philosophy they will get the same result, with the other company you are told over and over they they want to create a sim game and when they are interviewed you get the sense that they are passionate about trying to achieve this, if EA wants to compete they need to hire people with that same passion to create the truest to life NBA experience.

After spending a lot of time w/2K this year, I'm in a funny place. I'm not a big fan of either game. One seems to "simulate" from the aspect of what most fans know (the NBA on TV) while giving the player some measure of control over that. The other game seems to have taken a more generic approach to basketball and attempted to give the player the feel of having full control (or at least significantly more) of what happens on the court. The problem w/the latter approach is a lack of soul and authenticity. I can't help but wonder why no one has attempted or put more effort into doing both?

I think it's a given that most players will side with what they see versus what they feel. I'm not referring to fancy graphics but more so the ability to replicate the things, moves, actions, etc. they see on TV. I think that's truly where 2K beats EA, in the depth department, so to speak. Elite's dev's seem to have thought that if they give the player control over every aspect then the player would prefer EA's game regardless of its generic-ness. This to me seems like a reaction (over reaction) to 2K's lack of control.

I hope EA abandon's the philosophy of ultimate control over a generic game and decides to start w/Live 10's control philosophy, layer 2K's depth and variety of animation on top of that (to whatever degree possible), and pursue Elite's philosophy that the actions on the court should dictate the outcome of each circumstance, while using ratings and whatever else under the hood to only INFLUENCE but not decide that outcome. To me that would be the ultimate NBA Sim.

That's the problem almost every EA game has.
They put a huge emphasis on cool analog-controls. So what happens is, because they put so much weight on the users control of the sticks, they take away what the player your controlling can actually do.

So if you're really good with the controls, you can make a bad shooter into an all-star. Or if you're really bad with the sticks, your MVP becomes a D-league player.

That's why I enjoy a lot of the 2K games. The great players play more according to their attributes than what the users capabilities on the controls are.

Another issue EA has is always toeing the line between casual and sim. By trying to please everyone, they please nobody.

2K has gone hardcore sim and the game is selling tremendously. That should prove to all companies that a true sports sim will sell and sell well - if done right.
                                Even the casuals will come.
I know next to nothing about basketball and haven't played a hoops game since the SNES days and yet I'm buying 2K12.
