The 'evolution' of LIVE 04

As I followed up an early review of this game with a few criticisms - ie generic double teaming, rocket passing, horrible rebounding and a feeling of 'sameness' about the play sets (teams always seeming to post up either side, spread to deep corners etc) I thought it fair to post a quick note on this game after about a month of play and with all the changes.

I have to say, it's gone from good to...not so sure about it due to the above flaws IMO...to, man this thing is really, really good. Maybe even on the verge of

    The changes are:

    Pareds sliders.

    Showstoppers NBA play sets.

Boxing out option ON for both CPU and USER.

AUTO double teams turned OFF all role players and left AUTO for players who deserve them.

Ie, if I use Washington...Brendan Haywood shouldn’t be doubled and Stack left wide open.

Extensive edits - did these myself on my own opinions etc. Ie, Ben Wallace was rated a 75 or something for offensive rebounding out of the box. I put him up to 95 and worked my way down the NBA based on him as a reference. Ie, Elton Brand was something like 70 for O Rebounds...put up to 90. Also edited were several teams to make them stronger (New Jersey and San Antonio) and several "star" players. I think Iversons overall was 86 out of the box, Marbury low also. Both edited to mid 90's. Also edited were some players "primacy ratings" to reflect their roles in their team offense this season (ie Zach Randolph).

Now...I have to say, I love what I am seeing.

Example : switching LA from a dynamic to triangle offense really works great. You actually see Shaq coming out to the top of the key and plays running off him. What makes it even better is the game still runs Iso's and pick plays etc, so Kobe gets plays also and Shaq still posts up at times. It really is a thing of beauty to see a team running a correct offense in a video game. Only ID has ever gone close to this before.

Showstoppers play sets really add a tonne of DEPTH to the game. The replayability factor is HUGE in my opinion when judging a game. With different team styles coming at you, it makes a season worth playing.

Putting the box out options ON also slows the game down a fair bit and gives it a better fast break / half court balance.

The rebounding and rocket passes are really the only gameplay flaws left...it just seems the AI has inherit rebounding flaws unfortunately. LIVE seems to have always had a problem with this.

I can live with this though, and the box out and edits is improving the numbers.

This game is evolving into a really, really good game...

I am enjoying it a tonne and off into a full season.

Thanks to all the fella's for their tips etc. The LIVE board here has been really helpful this season. Major thanks to Showstopper and Pared.

In reference to your rebounding issues, I noticied that when I changed the CPU offense to run its normal set (LA triangle, NJ motion) AND set CRASH BOARDS to ON for both teams, the offensive rebounding was more realistic. The rebouding battles problem is still there (lack of animations) but the numbers are much better. Again, this is setting CRASH BOARDS to ON, not just BOX OUT...

damn...Live needs this much help out of the box????? You say rocket passes and rebounding is still bad. How is the spacing?...especially in transition? has it improved at all? IMO the players are too jumbled together and ice skate/glide too much for me to consider the action realistic. Do all these adjustements and edits help these issues as well? Thanks in advance.

Ie, Elton Brand was something like 70 for O Rebounds...put up to 90. damn...Live needs this much help out of the box????? You say rocket passes and rebounding is still bad. How is the spacing?...especially in transition? has it improved at all? IMO the players are too jumbled together and ice skate/glide too much for me to consider the action realistic. Do all these adjustements and edits help these issues as well? Thanks in advance.

They help the spacing a bit because the sets are run better now...the'bunching' seems to mainly occur when the CPU gets jumbled up after fast breaking / then going to half court.

YES...it's a bit of a pain to make all these changes.

HOWEVER...the simple facts are, after these changes LIVE is playing sweeeeeeet

More importantly, at least I can make the changes. Sadly, there's nothing I can change to make ESPN play real sets...because there are no real sets in the game. It pains me to say that, but it's true. Each team in ESPN plays the same...and that's amazingly dissapointing / a game killer for those of us who like to play a season

Re DOC above...yep, ID04 will probably be the best (again) for AI.

I am going to run with LIVE for a while, simply because I've played ID 02/03 a tonne (seasons in both)...and I'm enjoying the change.

ID04 will have better AI...but LIVE is good also
