Re: NBA Live 19 Demo Available Now For Both Xbox One & PS4 - Post Your Impressions He

So I finally got to test this demo out and “the one” game mode is really fun. I almost wish it never led to your player going to the league, but just stayed the pick-up game style and feel. It reminds me of the only NBA Street games but with realism and I’ve been enjoying that.

Play now is ok. Sound is way off during game. Idk if it’s a lack of sound effects, random crowd noises, or no PA guy in the background, but it feels off. Commentating actually doesn’t bother me, I’ve saw lots of complaints about it here.

Gameplays is headed towards the right direction, but still needs some improvements.

      PROS

      - Much like last year, I just like the "feel" of this game better than 2K. And by feel I mean the look of the players, the court, the atmosphere, and the colors/lighting. I really enjoy the ESPN presentation, too. It's very easy to get immersed in the game.

      - The CPU mid range game is back this year and it's really great to see. I spent time playing as both teams, and man, Kyrie and KD are REALLY hard to defend because of this. You think they are going to the basket, and then...BAM! A little step back mid range jumper. Awesome.

      - Pull up and catch and shoot jumpers feel incredibly smooth. The momentum and fluidity are captured perfectly. Shooting jump shots in Live is just plain fun.

      - I absolutely love the user controlled celebrations. It adds a nice layer of realism and is a nice jumping off point for Live to hopefully start focusing more on the "little things."

      - Dribbling is so smooth. I feel like I have control of my player, and am able to chain moves together without spamming.

      CONS

      - CPU defense is the biggest issue I have in this game, and it's one that will probably keep me from purchasing. First off, literally every player is face guarded from virtually 40 feet out - that includes guys like Al Horford and Aron Baynes. And on top of that, it's extremely rare that the CPU will come off of their defender to help, which means the drive and kick game is virtually non-existent. Open jump shots are virtually non-existent. Now I have seen occasions where I'm able to get an open jumper, but it's few and far between. And even when I do, the speed at which the defenders close out still make it a much more contested shot than it should be.

      - There's just an overall lack of signature feel, from overall team style of play to the traits/attributes/animations of individual players. When I played as or against Durant, man, it was just outstanding. But when using guys like Tatum or Hayward, I couldn't really feel a difference. As much as I get immersed in the atmosphere, this type of stuff just kills the experience for me.

Make no mistake about it, Live is trending in the right direction. I'm seeing a lot of things that I like. But as someone that only cares about the NBA side of things, there are still some significant improvements that need to be made on the gameplay side of things. The number of pros actually outweigh the number of cons for me. But, the cons are just game killers for me.

If the retail version plays better, I'll probably still consider a purchase once the price dips. But I feel like Live has 2020 written all over it if the developers decide to put most of their resources back into the NBA side of things.
You make some good points. As an Fyi, as stated by one of the devs some time back, they will be adding new signature animations throughout the year to better individualize star and distinct players. Not to mention the addition of new animations in general. At the time (couple months back) they only had 10 players with signature animations in the game, LeBron included (pigeon toe walk/run, wiping hands on front of jersey, etc). so stay ttuned, as they say. Definitely looking forward to the retail copy to see what has been added and improved upon thus far, including plays/playcalling, graphics/lighting, commentary, franchise, etc.

I'm not an offline player, but man the ai is incredibly cheap in the NBA setting on All-Star.

They don't freaking miss anything unless it gets blocked. KD making hook shots like he's a bigg.

They never swing the ball, it's usually one pass and shoot or drive.

Running plays is soo bad unless it's a quick off ball screens for a shooter, every other play is clunky as hell.

Because of the lack of movement speeds (walking/creeping) i can't really set things up like i want to because I'm forced into jog speed.

The game feels too fast almost like it's rushing you to get across half court.

I don't know it just doesn't feel like a well polished game in a lot of areas.

There's a bunch other things i don't feel like writing, but outside of the some of the nice graphical elements and dribbling i can't get with this just yet.

Is this a travel or not by Klay? Also peep how Morris is yo-yoing the ball while dribbling

One thing I am noticing is the off ball contests.

In Play Now games I play baseline low camera with auto-flip off so when on D my team is at the rim closest to me on the screen with my back to the screen.

It allows me to play D easier with frontcourt players and see all the details and play D off the ball.
this is where I am noticing improvement from both games last year. The one on one battles off ball are pretty realistic. Lots of hand fighting and positioning. Much better than I have seen in a Bball game

If they could shorten the meter timing by like 1/4 in catch and shoot situations I think they would feel so much smoother. They still come off as so clunky to me....shots that should have been open end up being contested. I think thats moreso the problem than closeout speed.

Also on FTs, I wish the meter followed the animation instead of: meter, then animation plays out...

They really need to just go back to the drawing board on free throws. I have yet to miss one.

I would be open to random timing windows in free throws. Like release point and size of the release window.

The better the skill, the less random. The lower, the more random.

So even if your guy is a 70% free throw shooter, you can still hit them consistently enough because of the release window not being too small, but you'll miss a few more because of the random timing of that window.

I don't know. A thought. Not sure it makes sense.

You can definitely creep the ball up the court. It's pressure sensitive. I walk it up all the time, and can really slow creep up the floor.

With that said, try superstar. They will work the ball around. But if you're having trouble w Allstars they will Def kill you and seem even more cheesy on ss. Lol. I couldnt do anything against them in the retail version. I didn't think AS was bad cheesy. But retail is a bit different than demo.

The plays, I agree. Still need a ton of work. I talked at great length about team and player specific tendencies. They've made strides, but still a ways to go.

On walking it up, just feather the stick lightly.

They definitely need to add a free throw meter slider difficulty and here in 2018 not having one is a bit ridiculous.
