Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
I kept true to my annual March tradition and fired up CH2K8. I played six games in the last two days in my UConn dynasty. It is silly how much fun and how engrossing this game is.
I went into #2 Marquette and torched them in the second half, winning by 18. My freshman 3PT stud caught fire and had 28 points. My next game, at unranked 12-8 WVU, I got blown out by 21 points. That same freshman had 4 points on 2-11 shooting.
One thing I played with was the foul sliders. Granted we're going back a dozen years now, I remember it being universally accepted that blocking, charging, and loose ball fouls should be set at 100. I set everything back to 50; it did the gameplay a lot of good in terms of removing physicality and some of the frustrating nonsense.
I was playing Villanova and had 22 FT in the first half (even though shooting fouls was only at 60) because every time my guards got into the paint I couldn't get a clean layup; some defender would always get there in time to foul me. I was fed up and figured I'd try tweaking a few settings. As is the case with many sports games, it looks like the foul/penalty sliders in 2K8 have a pretty big impact on gameplay. Combined with my post from March 2018 about zeroing-out CPU defensive attributes (help, awareness, etc) and it felt like I was playing a new game. My small, quick guards could knife through the defense and actually get off (and convert) layups. The good part is I still saw enough shooting fouls.
Now I need to balance out having the fouls sliders at default and CPU defensive settings zeroed out. It's not a matter of difficulty (my 21 point loss to WVU was the most recent game I played) but FG% is too high for both HUM and CPU. I think I'm really on to something, though.
My backup freshman PG is a good example. He's a Top 30 recruit, AA, etc. but he wasn't doing all that much for me because he's short and isn't a great shooter. Once I tweaked the foul settings he became a valuable bench piece since he can slash into the paint now and wreak havoc. He had a 12 points & 5 dimes against Marquette.
If there are other slider guys who are still playing 2K8 it's worth a shot to look into foul sliders. I've never been a big slider creator but there's something there. If anyone wants to try it, test rspencer's All-Conference sliders (https://forums.operationsports.com/f...e-sliders.html). Play a couple of games on those, then change just the foul settings to 50 across the board. If you want to take it one step further, play a few more games with fouls at 50 and CPU D AWR, Help D, and Help Strength at zero."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
Saw this game in the store the other day for $40. Was tempted to get it, but passed on it.....but i have been thinking about it ever since lol. Definitely have march madness fever, but trying to let it pass knowing that I probably won't touch it a month from now. CH2k8 was a hell of a game though. I still fire up NCAA Basketball 10 -- just started another JU dynasty after re-reading my old dynasty blog (link in my sig) from 10 years ago!"Basketball is my favorite sport
I like the way they dribble up and down the court

What's the best way to setup a simple coach mode legacy? Is there a legitimate coach mode option? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
I've read it may be best to run CPU v CPU games? How come? Doesn't that take away from the whole coach mode experience?
Has anyone tried an 'Athletic Director mode' or anything like that?@MikeLowe47 | YouTube | Discord

it also dawned on me that you may be thinking of coaching in game and watching it play out, I was leaning more toward doing the coach sim option where you manage minutes and strategies but that's about itWolverines Wings Same Old Lions Tigers Pistons Erika ChristensenComment

I think there's an option for coach mode, should be since you can coach the hs all star game. You can also hoopcast, which is the older version of super-sim, i think. But you'd have to check it out for yourself, because I barely remember those features.Comment

Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)
Currently in a closed legacy and found something cool enough to share. I have a freshman guard at a small school that I really like to score with when I play games with him. I put up about 20 shots a game with the dude. Problem is, I don't want to play EVERY game. I like to sim every other or maybe every third game just so I can move through legacy at a decent clip. But when I sim, my guy only gets up about 4 to 7 shots and scores about the same amount of points. Really kills the numbers I'm trying to maintain and the race I'm currently in for him to be conference PoY. At this point I've kinda bitten the bullet and am playing games with him because...
After experimenting and simming well into the next season, I see in the box scores that my guy ends up putting up about 10-17 shots a game! I've even had him coming off the bench with my 5 incoming freshmen as starters and he still gets up his shots. It definitely helps that the freshmen are burdened with the same miserable tendencies my guy had a year ago but I still think it's awesome.
I know those in open legacies can just edit the tendencies and have them stick, but I don't think it works like that in closed ones. I tried editing and upping his tendencies to help me get on my way to simulating games but they always just ended up reverting. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, I dunno. I knew that guys' tendencies grew and changed over the years but it's been a while since I've played the game and seen the tendencies change so drastically. Based on user play. At least that's what I'm calling it. Not a natural growth he would have seen if it was pure sim from year 1 to year 2.
Dynamic tendencies. Love this game, 10+ years later. Even saw the CPU pull off a post hop power dunk on me in the tournament earlier in the legacy. Now I have to keep playing until I'm able to pull that off myself, because I don't think I ever have!
TL;DR: Player tendencies can be influenced from year to year based on how you play in-game with each player.
EDIT: Just checked,
FR tendencies: 21 close, 37 med, 57 three, 48 drive, 67 foul
SO tendencies: 82 close, 75 med, 74 three, 98 drive, 67 foulLast edited by SaylaB; 12-07-2020, 10:20 AM.Comment

You should be able to change the tendencies even in the closed legacies. I play on coach mode sometimes so being able to change the player tendencies is a huge deal for me.
This might be a dumb question to ask, but did you make sure that when you leave the customization window, that you press "start" and not "B/Circle" (depending on 360/PS3) to leave the screen? You might be cancelling the customization of the player by accident by hitting "B/Circle."“If you’re true to yourself, you’re going to be true to everyone else.”Comment

I could have sworn I remembered editing tendencies in a different legacy but figured maybe I did it within the first 2 weeks of the season where you can redshirt, release, and edit players positions. That maybe that was the only window where changes would take hold. Looks like I was mistaken though.Comment

As I was experiencing this and then typing this post, that procedural error crossed my mind. Maybe I did press B earlier on in the year when I tried to edit his tendencies. That must have been what happened because sure enough, I just edited his tendencies to what they hit next year and simmed a few games where he put up 9, 11, and 16 shots and added a handful more free throws. Scoring 11, 17, and 20 points respectively.

So I believe that I have come to discover that the 6th man option in 2K8 while I like the idea of it, it makes the game a lot harder to play. I always turn off the clutch factor and now the 6th man. Any thoughts from anyone else on this 6th man option?Comment

Huh. I think I may have found a new layer to recruiting. It needs more testing, but what I've been doing is going to the Juniors and Sophmores (that are 4 and 5 stars) that didn't play in the ABL (What AAU is called in this game) and scouting them (they usually get overlooked, so if they are local you can usually get them with a concerted effort).
A large number of those 5 stars as Juniors end up as 3 stars, but they still keep the same skills. And, as I said, it needs more testing, but I think the deciding factor is that determines whether or not a recruit keeps his 5 star rating is the potential stat.Comment
