Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)

No idea if anyone still keeps an eye on this thread or not. But I've been getting back into the game again since I always loved the Legacy mode in it. And after re-reading this entire thread again, I have a couple questions that I didn't see any answers for.

1.) Do your assistant coaches improve at all as the legacy goes on? I ran a couple sim legacies to get a feel once again for recruiting and everything, and kept the same assistants for ten plus years without seeing any improvements in their ratings. Are they static?

2.) When it comes to player development, if you don't focus on certain aspects of their development, do their ratings start to degrade? Or is there no repercussions for focusing on certain aspects and leaving others alone?

3.) Just curious about something when it comes to stats while simming the games. After keeping an eye on the stats and everything, I noticed that my teams struggled to have players averaging high numbers. I'm curious what the averages are for players in lower conferences or whatever. My leading scorer would barely average over ten points a game, leading passer barely average 2 assists a game, etc. Is that a glitch? Are some settings messed up? Or am I just doomed to have poor stats haha

4.) In relation to the previous question, are there any sliders that can be decent for someone just simming games? I don't really like the gameplay of this game anymore, struggle to go back to it, and actually prefer the teambuilding aspect more anyway. So I would like a set that gets decent stats while simming

Really wish the servers were still active for this game. Would love to be able to download new rosters and everything for the game.

To answer 3) & 4), the way to get proper and consistent sim stats is twofold.. First off, the player tendencies have to set up properly. If you want someone to score a lot, you have to give guys high tendencies. Also, may want to look at the consistency rating for the players. The way I figured this out was by looking at the default roster after simming a season, and looking at the tendencies of players with high point, rebound, assist, steals, etc. stats and then looking at their tendencies. The second part of it adjusting the coaching sliders. One thing I found annoying with the game is the high amount of turnovers teams usually had during games. I am currently creating a roster now for the 2017-18 season, and I have all coaches defensive pressure set to 0. This allows for better spacing in game and provides better sim stats. It is unfortunate the game sliders do not impact the sims stats but I believe you studying the default roster and the player tendencies and kind of make "prototypes" for different types of players, and apply it to all the players on the roster, you will begin to see more realistic sim stats and also much more improved game play.

        BRASKA-

Do you believe coaching sliders affect sim stats? I only looked at tempo but I did not good a good feel for what impact coaching sliders had on simmed games.

You are obviously 100% correct on Player tendency, from what I have experienced.

I know for sure with defensive pressure down to 0, you will see less turnovers in the sim stats.. The tempo dictates pace which somewhat helps the overall scoring average increase. The same can be said for the fast break slider. I have been running through your slider thread trying to come up with sliders for coach mode, as well as trying to figure out parameters for coach profiles. I definitely do think they can have a big impact on sim stats, but what exactly they impact, is what I am trying to figure out.

Has anyone played this game on a 4K TV? If so, are the graphics better or worse? Thinking about picking this up again, but I now have a 4K TV.

Does anyone know how to scout a recruit and know he will be a good 3 point shooter?

I have noticed that the shooting skill in itself doesn't always correlate to a high 3 point shooter, it usually indicates an area of where they will fall, but if I wanted to recruit only a 3 point specialist vs a good shooter in general, any ideas of what to look for?

I have a question that I don’t think I’ve seen answered here: do shooters make more shots if they receive a pass from a player with a higher pass rating? For example, I have a senior point guard that is decent but not great with his passing ability. I have a freshman point guard that was voted best playmaker in the conference. I’m starting to notice that my shooters are much more efficient when the freshman is getting them the rock. Maybe it’s an anomaly or maybe it’s not.

I think that is right, I’ve noticed that as well. It would make sense, I can defined try it out some more and get back to you.

I’ve never noticed that, but that would be pretty cool if true. It would make sense conceptually since the better passer may be putting his passes on the money so the shooter can just catch and shoot rather than having to adjust to an off-target pass before shooting.

I have the PS2 version of CH 2k5 and am looking for updated rosters. I would certainly upgrade to the 2k8 game to get updated rosters, but need to stay with the PS2. I didn't see any updates for this on the forum anywhere. Does anyone have some, or know where I can look?

I popped in 2K8 over the weekend. Everyone knows how much basketball has changed in the 11 years since this game came out; I figured I'd try to open up the game a bit. Granted there is still a lot of ugly halfcourt offense in college basketball, I wanted to create a better flow to the game and make it easier to get open threes and make driving lines a little more realistic. One of the main issues with this game has always been defenses rotating too quickly in addition to the defense being able to warp/bump/stop ball handlers.

I put CPU sliders at zero for the following: defensive awareness, help D, help recovery. The rest was default All Conference. I expected to shoot 60%+ from the floor and drop 90+ points on 16-minute halves.

I fired up my UConn dynasty (in my 5th season) for a home game vs #4 Duke. They're a great defensive team so I figured it'd be a good test.

I noticed a difference in their defensive immediately. Good ball movement typically led to an open shot but it wasn't too easy (my team is also loaded, as most powerhouse teams are a few years into a legacy). The CPU wasn't flying all over the floor, making perfect closeouts on every pass. My stud freshman (#2 overall player in the nation with 88 for 3PT) scored 17 of my first 21 points including 4-7 from deep. I nearly quit the game because I thought it was too easy. I took a seven point lead into the locker room. Then the second half started; I could not make a thing. I missed my first ten shots. I finished the half 0-11 from three and shot 23%. I managed to get to the FT line a bunch down the stretch and won by three in a fantastic game.

It wasn't a high scoring game (I believe 67-64 was the final). I did not have any of the goofy animations where you drive to the hoop and the CPU mugs you, the ball pops loose and your play falls to the ground in a lifeless heap. Maybe lowering DAWR impacts that sort of stuff? Regardless, I think there's something here if anyone is interested in playing a different, more modern type of game. Certainly more tweaks will need to be made but the game was really fun and along the lines of what I was hoping to see.

I played this over the weekend as well in between games.

While graphically it is definitely dated and some of the animations make you cringe, overall the game is still an absolute blast to play. After playing all I could think of was how much ahead of its time, CH2k8 was and its a damn shame that we don't have a current college basketball game.

Interesting findings. I’ve been using the same MOP sliders for a long time, which is nice since I can just play rather than obsess over sliders, but sometimes I wonder about them and MOP level in general. I always find it odd how I tend to lose to some teams I really have no business losing to (for example, two of my four losses last season came to sub-.500 teams in my legacy - talking about where I have a better record against the RPI Top 50 compared to against the RPI 101-200 teams). Sometimes, it seems like you never have a chance, no matter who you’re facing.

Then again, Villanova and Duke lost to St. John’s this year, so maybe a top five team losing to a sub-.500 one isn’t that unrealistic. Of course, part of the problem in the game is that really good rated teams will too often end up finishing sub-.500, but they still play to their ratings when you play them and thus you’re more likely to lose.
