So you think the Suns will be a 4th or 5th seed? Because obviously the Spurs have to be #1. Who will win the Pacific besides us?

More logical than Saunders, in MY opinion.

Brown was a good motivator (minus the times he looked for the Cavs/Knicks/every other team's job). I disagree with Clay that all Det needs is someone to shell out minutes. They are not thaaat talented individually. Collectively is a different story.

Flip is more of a hands-off coach from what I have seen. A "ho-hum" kinda guy. If that works with them, so be it. Darko will definitely get more minutes. What that will equate to, who knows.

The only reason I wouldn't like Flip is that I don't know if he's capable of coaching without a superstar on the team.

The Pistons need a strong defensive X's and O's guy, and a disciplinarian who can keep them focused on playing the hardcore, lockdown D they're known for. Not everyone can keep a team so single-minded...Larry lost a few guys in the locker room by preaching defense nearly to the exclusion of all else, but you can't argue with how successful its been. If that team loses anything...and I mean ANYTHING defensively, their offense is nowhere close to capable of picking up the slack, IMO.

I'd even take Doc Rivers and his star ball over Flip. At least Doc's Magic teams overachieved. Flip's teams underachieve ever year.

I think the The Suns will be a #3 seed. My Spurs may be a #2 seed. Come playoff time, talent & teamwork usually win out as a combo, not one without the other.

Spurs have that combo down. I see the Grizz, Fakerz, & Jazz making bigger improvements in the win/loss record.

Jeff is borderline, since he's done it over a while, but not Stan.

Flip is a good coach, but teams are usually a reflection of the coach & the T'Puppiez haven't faired well in the playoffs. So that kind of leaves a bad reflection on Flip.

                      Re: Brown is out

But, what can Flip Saunders do to derail the Pistons...????

He'd have to bench 3 or 4 starters to keep them out of the ECF.

Plus, don't fool yourselves... Joe Dumars runs this team.

X & O's are all fine and good...but Larry Brown did not improve the Pistons offesively (which is where you see the most improvement via X's and O's). The Pistons' defensive rotation which won them a Championship and took them 1 game away this year...was in place with pRick Carlisle.

So, what changed between pRick and LB...???

Joe D forced Carlisle to play Tayshaun and he blossomed
                      Joe D picked up Sheed

This a great team from the top down... yes, I was exagerating when I said someone just needs to shell out the minutes, but what did LB do that Flip can't???

                      Control Sheed? LB didn't
Make Sheed hit the block? LB didn't
Season the young players? LB didn't

Again I ask you... what would a Flip Saunders do to make this team worse???

P.S. To Skillz' list of Coaches...

                      Jackson is a joke
Jerry Sloan.... you talk about a choker
I'll give you LB and Pop...
I'm borderline on Karl because I don't think he has any repoire with players...
and the Van Gundys and Doc Rivers????????? I almost pissed myself!

Jerry Sloan is a very good coach. He's one of the few coaches in the L that actually has a definitive style that is truly his. He's also one of the few coaches in the league that commands respect and has some power (gasp!) over players.

BTW I think Tom Izzo would be a great NBA coach and he'd fit will with the Pistons. Too bad he hasn't been given a shot unless he wants to stay at Michigan State.

                            Disagree wholeheartedly on both counts...

What has Sloan done without 2 of the Top 50 players in NBA history on his roster???? Jerry Sloan is a product of the people who played for him. His "style" is a product of the people who played for him. And, so he ran into MJ....so....the West was awful in those years.

Izzo has been given plenty of opportunities. He turns them down because, well quite frankly, he has a cush gig at MSU. He's making NBA money. He runs the school. Don't get me wrong...if they could field a decent football team, he'd be hurting, but for the last decade it's been a Basketball School.

That being said, from the pure coaching perspective, I'm not a fan of Izzo. I think he is one of the worst time managers of any successful coach I have ever seen. His rotations are downright screwy.

Izzo would be better than Flip IMO. Tom may have his shortcomings, but the Spartans have always been a great defensive team under his wing and they've always done well on the boards. He seems like a master motivator and he's been to final fours with teams that really don't stack up well with the other 3 combatants. Flatly, he's a winner and I think he'd fit well in Detroit.

Not sure what the great appeal towards Flip is. He's had talented teams, but he's failed many times to take them anywhere. He's a good coach, but I think he's a bit overrated.

Now if they don't take Flip, I wonder who they'd go to.

                                Chuck Daly?
                                Pat Riley?
                                Coach K?

I just don't see the great appal to Flip, but it seems like it's a forgone conclusion and that they will make him the new Pistons HC.
