Dirk whining about Tmac and Kobe and american sports

    Got this from Realgm

    Quote:
SACRAMENTO – Dirk Nowitzki took Kobe Bryant's 62-point eruption as an opportunity to point out the differences in basketball in the United States and in Europe.

The biggest discrepancy: the absence of the team game in America.

When asked if Bryant's huge game was, at the least, a good entertainment package for fans even though it came at the Mavericks' expense, Nowitzki said:

"I guess. That's what American sports are – a one-man show, I guess. Every time you look on TV, it's not Houston and LA, it's T-Mac [Tracy McGrady] and Kobe against each other."

That's not the case in Europe, the German-born Nowitzki said. While many soccer superstars are revered in Europe, basketball is known as a team game, not for its individual playmakers.

Recently, the German national team that Nowitzki led to a silver medal in the European Championships was named the sports team of the year in Germany, a rarity given the dominance of soccer there.

"In Europe, it's more of a five-on-five game," he said. "But I guess over here it's more a game of stars and a game of heroes. And Kobe put on a show."

Nowitzki's point is well taken. The NBA goes to great lengths to market its superstars more so than teams. Superstar jerseys sell quickly. Hats with team logos, not so well.

I agree completely with Dirk and I've made this argument more than a few times in this forum. Thats why the NBA will never be as popular as the NFL or even the MLB. I bet most so called NBA fans could'nt name 3 players on each team its so bad.

I hope more and more players/coaches/anylist speak out on this situation like Dirk did.

"a good entertainment package for fans"

That sums it up. I love basketball, but my mindset when attending an NBA game is totally different from when I go to NFL or NHL games. At those games I'm sitting up high, analyzing the different matchups and the X's and O's at all times. But when I go to NBA games, it's all about sitting up close and watching the superstars do their thing. That's not to say there's no strategy in the game today, but the game isn't marketed as strategical. Even when you're at the games it's difficult to view it that way.

When TV networks frown on a great team like the Pistons making the NBA Finals because they lack the star power of, say, the Lakers....you know the league is marketing its product incorrectly. Or maybe not incorrectly, but at least not to anyone more than the casual hoops fan.

Straight up funny on the real. I really didn't expect to hear this from Dirk. Of course, he made a good point. I have to say that the 60+ point route didn't really impress me. I'm hearing the Lakers are doing good. Hopefully we'll see how the games start turning out for them. It's so weird too cause I love basketball more than any other sport, but I can slowly see why so many people are losing their attraction for it. Can only hope that more organizations start refocusing their team energy towards a new direction.......

I would argue that the NBA was more popular than MLB in the 80's early 90's. Also MLB focuses on individuals too.

You're right, the MLB does individualize players alot as well. But at the same time, they usually nationally televise marquee matchups like the Yanks, BoSox and Cubs no matter who is on the team.

Using commercials as an example, more times than often, the NFL and MLB will highlight a superstar in a commercial endorsing a product with the teams uniform on showing that they represent a team and not themselves. Find me a NBA commercial where a superstar is endorsing a product with a team uniform on? Even the Carmelo Nike commercial, he has a Nuggets jersey on, but they only show the back where his name and number are. T-Macs commercial has him wearing a fake jersey. Its things like that that individualize players and it shows that the superstars are all thats important to the league.

MLB televises those matchups because they are the 3 biggest TV markets not because they are intrested in promoting the teams over individuals.

I agree with your points about the commercials though.

Dirk's got some good points, but after being lit up by Kobe, it sounds like sour grapes to me.

                        Not only sour grapes... but

If he feels so against how american sports are ran

Maybe he can pay the money back he's earned here

Then he could go back and play in Europe

                        What are the chances though

He may have sounded bitter but he does have a point. Who does'nt love stars but if you can call yourself a fan of anything, one needs to realize that there is more to it than just 1 person. We're basically feeding players egos when we go to a venue just to see them. And its no wonder why many athletes are selfish money grubbers nowadays. Then we got the nerve to talk down on them when they demand more moeny or say something selfish. Kinda hypocritical if you ask me.
