Game 1 was about 15% down from last year's Game 1. Complete final ratings will come out later today but it looks like this might be the lowest rated Game 1 in NBA Finals history and 2nd lowest game in Finals history.

Spurs are rating killers. LeBron has the hype machine behind him but it clearly doesn't translate to big ratings. Perhaps he's simply not as popular as the media (.... ESPN/Nike) would like you to think he is.
Those numbers aren't THAT bad, especially when most people thought it was a given how the game would turn out. I don't think it's ever good when the small market team is so much more dominant. Last year we had star power yes, but there was a pretty even matchup between the two teams.

I think if Cleveland takes the next two, Game 5 draws a HUGE number.

the same way ratings are determined for every other show on television. It's not accurate, but it at least is the same method every show has to be judged by.

Re: NBA Ratings continue to slide

we all know these playoffs have been less than stellar and the finals is even more atrocious.

the playoffs this year was half boring sans a few teams all star weekend went from a fans treat to a fans dismay and the season was really one of the worst in recent memory.

the ratings thing is not a surprise because even a hardcore bball fan has to come away feeling a bit disappoined. how many people have you walked up to and asked did you watch the game and you get the answer NO... and the one who said that didn't even show a hint of regret.

stern does care as long as he's getting his money though.

          My thoughts on ratings:

It seems that more boobs are watching boobtube shows and not interested in sports.

I only watch movies, cartoons, news and sports, not TV shows.

Not basketball's fault, just good TV programming perceived by the public, hence the boobtube is in full effect!!

I figured that, but how do they do it for every other show on television? Guess I'll research that one day when I'm bored.

Re: NBA Ratings continue to slide

Well, as much as I enjoy watching the NBA this season, I must admit that the Spurs aren't as marketable as the Suns/Mavs and the ratings have alot to do with that, but the Spurs deserve to be there and it's unfortunate that being such a defensive hustle style team they don't get as much love for the fundamentals as some teams that have flashier players.

I totally respect the Spurs except sometimes it annoys me watching Ginobili flop, but for the most part I'm ok with it because every team has a tool or two.

I don't respect them for s**t. That bs against Phoenix help cost the Suns a shot (eff Stern and all those who support that bulls**t rule) and that coatrider Horry is about to win another ring for that.

Dude, shut the hell up. Stoudamire deserved to be suspended. The man was halfway up the damn sideline before that coach stopped him. It's not like he took a couple of steps. And even then, the Suns still had a chance to pull it out in game 5. People act like Stoudamire and Diaw were thrown out for the whole series. Quit acting like they were suspended for game 7.

America's Got Talent beat the NBA finals last night by a good margin and the repeat of Law in Order also beat it in the ratings.

I myself found a CSI:Miami show on some other channel and flipped back n' forth between commercials. I must say, I didn't miss anything at all as the Cavs and Spurs managed to put up a combined 27pts in that 3rd quarter. I consider myself to be a pretty big basketball fan in general and am able to respect some lock down defenses, but do I really want to watch that? Nope. I can honestly say that I've seen more exciting high-school games. Realistically, this can be a matchup for the next 3-5 years with each year it getting worse.
                            I do because I can, I can because I want, I want because you say I can't
