I thought that the Bird Exemption only grandfathers those with non-rookie contracts before 1998?

As far as I know The Bird Exemption was included in the last collective barganing agreement. If the Bird Exception want their, the Lakers would not have been able to offer Kobe the $54 million extension this year.

Don't be surprised if Kobe ends up in Washington. It is no surprise that Kobe and MJ are friends. Whenever they play one another, they are always joking around and having fun and MJ definitely respects Kobe's game, considering Kobe based his game solely on MJ's. Plus, the Wizards are gonna look to unload Stackhouse with his complaints about Jordan and the Wizards have a lot more cash due to the attendance hike that Jordan's last 2 years created. Everyone thinks that Jordan returned for his passion, however I think he returned to earn some extra revenue, due to the fact that he knew every game he played in would sell out. Now that the Wizards have the extra revenue, they could unload Stackhouse and sign Kobe, thus making them a playoff contender. I wouldn't be surprised to see Kobe in a Wizards uni. Jordan has been known to do some crazy things.

This wont happen. Living in DC I would love to be able to see Kobe for 41 games (Even though I would be heartbroken being a lakers fan). Even if you set aside the fact that the Lakers have his Bird rights and can pay him more then the Wizards no matter how much cap space they have, Kobe loves being in LA and being a Laker. He also knows that Shaq will be gone in a few years and it will be his team.

Plus the Wizards have cap room for this year and Kobe isnt a FA until 2004. Friendship doesnt mean anything either. Jordan and V. Carter are good friends and the Wizards had cap room to sign VC when he was a FA, but VC stayed w/ the Raptors because he could get more money.

This is from an LA Times article about Kobe leaving or staying.
                      </font><blockquote><font class="small">Quote:</font><hr />
IT'S A good thing I talked to Kobe personally because I learned something very important. He said he never said that he intends to opt out of his Laker contract after next season. I presume he's still scared about losing to a girl, but no, he never said he plans to test the free-agent market, and possibly leave L.A.

"I just never said that," Kobe said, which kind of makes all these newspaper and internet reports saying otherwise suspect.

The Los Angeles Daily News wrote a big story about Kobe's decision to opt out of his contract, ran his picture and underneath his name, wrote: "Lakers point guard says he wants to test the market in 2004."

I read the whole story and never found quote marks around any such thing said by Kobe, or anything else said by him, and for that matter no announcement from Coach Phil Jackson that Kobe has now relieved Derek Fisher as the team's point guard.

"It bugs me when people start talking about things that aren't true and start running with them and start making all these assumptions," Kobe said. "Everybody has got me playing some place else now."

So how did this get started? I asked.

"A reporter asked me if I ever think about free agency, and I said, 'Yeah, I do,' but I never said I'd opt out of my contract. I'm a very detailed person on everything, and I love to learn about the salary cap and all the intricacies of business details and when the time is right I will check everything out. But L.A. is my home — I just built a house there.

"I haven't even thought about my contract; I'm not thinking of anything but winning a fourth title. Looking down the road, I guess, if you were into gambling — and if I were you — I'd bet I'll be playing right here in Los Angeles."

                      <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

                      He'll probably be staying.
