I guess my question is what is considered a shot....

I would come out and say there has to be millions of legit basketball players around the world wanting a chance at making a NBA team... To even get a chance at a tryout... This guy was drafted has enough cred to earn millions and people are defending him like its the autistic kid who hit all those three pointers in a row year or so ago(he doesnt need anyones sympathy or protection)... HE is HAVING HIS SHOT NOW if he blows it its not the MAGIC's organizations fault or Bogan's fault or Kyle Korver's fault its JJ's fault. If he does enough in practice to play he would play point blank.

So, he really doesn't fit with the Magic. My problem is stemming from people knocking on him before the man gets a decent shot at proving himself. I just want to see what he can do if given the chance as I see some nice upside to him in the right situation.

While players can certainly be in bad situations that limit their production I don't think that applies to Redick. His game doesn't translate to the NBA. Long range threats that come off the bench in the NBA are spot up shooters, that's never what Redick was. In college he got open looks through Duke's offense and a ton of off-ball screens. One would think it's easier to knock down a three when spotting up as opposed to coming off screens but that's not always the case. Some players are rhythm shooters that benefit from moving w/o the ball or shooting off the dribble.

Guys like Kapono and Korver are different than Redick. Both are spot up shooters with size. Kapono is 6'8 and a career 46% three-point shooter. Korver is 6'7 and a career 41% three-point shooter.

Steve Kerr is probably the best comparison but he's a career 45% 3PT shooter. I also think Kerr was quite a bit quicker than Redick.

Warriors: Probably, he'd be another target for BD in transition on the perimeter.

Nuggets: Denver already has a 3-point chucker who plays no defense.

Suns: Their rotation is crazy thin as it is, so he might see time...could they really use another defensively challenged guard, though?

I do believe a team where defense is an after thought and shooters have the green light would be a good fit for him... at the same time those teams are loaded with those kind of players and he still has to be out those guys to see the floor. He cant crack the lineup of a good three point shooting team right now so its no given just cause he has a green light and wont get notice as a defensive liability will mean more PT cause there are still people you have to outplay to see the floor.

The chance is to show what you can do is practice... honestly if he was doing well in practice do you think a coach would not play him. In a situation where a few loses here and there could eventually cost you your job what motivation would a coach have in not playing a player who is doing well @ practice

Van Gundy said he has conversations with his assistant coaches on a daily basis asking, 'Should we be playing him?' as it relates to Redick. He said Redick's ardent practice habits and how he has responded when put in games has made it difficult to keep Redick on the bench.

"I think about him all the time, and he makes you think about him with the way he practices," Van Gundy said. "I know he's really frustrated because there's not much more he can do. He plays well out here in practice, and when we give him chances in games he's played well. That's a frustrating thing, but he has to keep doing what he's doing. It's not a negative thing with him. I know he can help us and I'm sure he will."

You're basically saying that Jonathan Clay is an average to below average shooter and his shooting skills have diminished because he doesn't play in the NBA. Great insight there.

JJ was never the greatest shooter in college.

That's part of the problem. JJ was the most hyped shooter in college, but there were a bunch of players who were better shooters. JJ wasn't even in the more elite shooters' league.

JJ was a great shooter, but he was all about coming off picks and screens. I'm sure you'll throw up a video of one game where he got hot and hit a few shots in some peoples' faces, but that was rarely the case, almost all of his shots were wide open shots that most NBA players can knock down with ease, especially with the screens and open looks he was getting. I think Morrison was a better shooter than JJ was, and I was a fan of JJ in college.

You can't say anyone in the last 50 years is a much better shooter than Jonathan Clay is.
