Its your list and this isnt really directed at you specifically but the idea that Kareem meant more to the Lakers than Magic did is kind of crazy when you consider that LA didnt win squat with Kareem prior to Magic arriving, when they started winning championships in Magics rookie year...with or without Kareem (they won the clinching game with Magic playing C and Kareem injured). Plus the Lakers went to the finals with Magic and without Kareem. Kareem was a great player, no doubt about it. But like I also said, when Kareem entered the league it was a league for 7' centers but when he left the league, it was a league of players like Magic Johnson or more specifically an athletic 6'7 player.

I really never came to this realization until this thread existed. I realize that stats drive this in part and I realize that Kareem is the all time leading scorer and all but if I look at who was more important to the Lakers, its Magic.

actually, your probably right. You convinced me. When it comes to the Lakers, Magic was probably the best. Kareem won a few MVPs before he got to LA, but when he Kareem got to the Lakers LA didnt do as much until Magic arrived.

Some people look at it in terms to what a particular player meant to a team. For the era Mikan played in, he was enormously important to the Lakers.

Yeah that's obvious man. Guess while I have respect for the past, I have a vastly different definition of "the best".

I think some people have a hard time giving Shaq, and definitely Kobe any props All-Time wise. Sure pick Kareem over Shaq, pick Magic over Kobe, fine. But Mikan? That's something else.

I think since it was so long ago, a lot of people have the impression the the Lakers won during Mikans time because they had the big tall guy in Mikan, whereas Kobe and Shaq had each other. I think possibly to some extent too people percieve what LA did during the Shaq Kobe years as being overshadowed by the Spurs...and some, fair or not, it might be somewhat diminished for that reason. Thats a guess though.
