Yeah maybe three then. Texas is a ton different than 99% of states.

CA definitely doesn't need three or four teams.

The only thing I want them to adopt from the NFL is the partially guaranteed contracts. Make the players stay hungry, not to mention the risk of injury pales in comparison to the NFL.

With sportsguy as well. Partially guarenteed contracts and a hard cap.

Players can opt to go the NBA directly, but if they go to college, they stay 3 years.
FIBA rules on goaltending. Ball is still live even if it's on the rim.
        Widen the lane.
        Bring back handchecking.
        And 5-7-7-7

I don't know about the shot-clock rule that matrix suggested. How would that work?

Give technicals for obvious flops (although this would give more power to refs).

The booth ref simply buzzes the other officials when he sees something wrong, or just manually fixes it. It would save time and increase accuracy.
it also forces the ref to make the right call. Media could say oh how could you miss that call with the reply there

I'd say I'm pretty content with the NBA at this point with the exception of this. I staunchly oppose the current format for end-of-game scenarios. As was so eloquently put, it is essentially "foul-free throws-timeout-commercial-foul-timeout-commercial. . . .". My gut feeling would be to provide each ballclub with one time-out in the final 2 minutes of a game.

I understand from an x's and o's standpoint as to why a coach may prefer to call a time-out on each of his final two possessions. However, both coaches using two time-outs within the final 20 seconds of a ball game = four time-outs which subsequently means 20 seconds of NBA basketball actually yields a stunted mixbag of inbounds passes, fouls, commercials, and close-ups of huddles in 20-30 minutes real time.

The one time-out per club would still allow teams to advance the ball to half-court in time-limited scenarios (think LeBron with 1.0 second left) but would otherwise force teams to be prepared to execute in the waning seconds of a close game without first taking what feels like a combined 10 minutes to rest and discuss where four guys are going to stand while the star iso's.

There is a rule on timeout in the fourh quarter, the last two minutes, and overtime. In the fourth quarter a team can have no more than 3 timeouts and it's limited to 2 in the last two minutes. If they have 2 full timeouts one will be changed into a 20 second timeout. In overtime you are given 2 full and a 20 and when the last two minutes hit it is back down to one full and a 20 second if you have any left.

Remove the 1-year draft rule and institute the MLB rules - you can come out as a HS, but if you go to college, you have to stay at least 3 years.

More stringent officiating with an emphasis on consistency and no star calls.

                    Bring back hand check defense.

Flopping are automatic techincals, repeat offenders receive ejections and/or subject to multiple game suspensions.

Simple. Now, when you shoot before the 24 second clock expires, even if you get the shot off, it has to hit the rim. If it doesn't hit the rim, there's a stoppage of play. Now, that's not a "shot" clock, because the shot was actually taken but there's still a buzzer and stoppage for whatever reason. Change it so it's the SHOT that matters, not the fact whether it hits the rim or not.

So under your rule, blocked shots and the like would reset the clock?

As long as it's shot before 24 seconds, yeah.

EDIT: Actually, I don't know. Perhaps you can have it where if it was blocked, the clock still runs the same if the offense so happened to recover the ball.

Correct, but I still feel as though two time-outs per team in the final two minutes is one too many. Combined, that is four time-outs that are all oftentimes used with under 30 seconds of gameplay remaining. It's just too much stoppage for me. Any flow a great game had is ground to an immediate halt in the final minute of contention.

Essentially, what it all breaks down to, is I do not like the feeling that I'm watching an American Idol Results Show (we'll be back with the results after these messages. . .and then after these messages. . .and then those messages over there). I still love watching crucial end-of-game moments, but I'd be lying if I didn't ever say to myself "This would be so much better without all these stupid stoppages."

I would have the entire foul system changed. This is the only sport in which a player can "foul" out of the game. I don't mind the 6 foul limit (5 in college and highschool), but I believe it hurts the NBA game to have superstar players riding the bench because of foul trouble (Dwight Howard vs Cavs). The other problem is the current defensive culture that stems from players not wanting to be in foul trouble. I'm sure D.Stern doest care because it leads to more scoring.
I would say penalize a player for getting more than 6 fouls by giving the other team 2 shots and the ball. It'd be better than having that player leave the game.
