Oops. I didn't even see Kobalt's post about NJ not making a move unless Melo commits to an extension until now, which is the smart move by them. I wasn't sure if they were going to be ridiculous and make the move regardless.

So yeah, you are right. Right now it does look like NY is in the driver's seat and Denver is pretty much powerless, unless they find someone willing to make a deal for him without a long-term commitment, which I still wouldn't rule out happening.

Yep, Denver's been powerless during this entire ordeal.

Their hands are tied. Honestly I don't see him being dealt. What team would trade away assets knowing he'll only be a rental? It doesn't add up.

I could see it happening. If a team is renting him it probably won't be this month or even next month, but I could see a contender making a move for him after the All-Star break. Orlando comes to mind.

The thing is, I really don't think he's dead set on going to NY. I think he can be convinced as long as he's in a winning situation with good players surrounding him.

Maybe, but really you're going to trade your assets/picks for a guy who isn't going to stay? I just can't see any team doing that. And if a contender makes a move, I'm just not sure how they would be able to reel him in without gutting their team.

Orlando is definitely a good team for Melo to land on, but nothing they have entices Denver.

The thing with Melo is that if a team makes a trade for him, it might end up gutting that team to get him. Therefore it would be smart to just wait until the summer to pick your own team and know what you're getting yourself into. I think he realizes this, I'm not sure how he wouldn't. So that's going to limit a lot of chance for him to sign an extension with a team and agree to a trade.

Knicks Won't Part With Fields In Possible Melo Deal

Chris Sheridan of ESPN.com writes that while the Knicks may have the pieces needed to acquire Carmelo Anthony from the Nuggets, they may not be willing to part with them.

Denver especially covets rookie Landry Fields, but New York is reluctant to move him.

Fields, a second-round pick, is playing under a two-year contract and will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2011-12 season.
Really though? How does the headline say they won't part with Landry but the body says they're reluctant to do so?

              Re: The Carmelo Anthony Saga

At this point, any team that wants Melo might as well just wait it out until the off-season. Because it looks like Denver is not going to trade him for cheap. Melo made it clear that he wants to play for the Knicks. From that point on, the Knicks hold the winning ticket to land Melo. So why should they give up anything NOW when they know he'll most likely sign with them later. And even if Melo does get traded to another team, it's most likely he'll leave that team after this season to go play for the Knicks.

Now here is where the situation gets sticky for Melo. Let's say he gets traded to the Magic, Bulls, Celtics or Lakers and ends up winning a championship. Does he still leave? I can still see him leaving the Lakers because the shadow of Kobe would be too big for him to be around. I could see him staying in Orlando, Boston or Chicago past this season.

Kicks are looking for a deep playoffs try this season I'd bet, getting 'Melo would certainly guarantee them to get at least to the 2nd round

Because there is still time and Denver's front office is still using smoke and mirrors to appear as if they're playing hardball and hold an ounce of leverage. Their tune, and demands, will change at the deadline.

I don't believe that they'll change. Just a hunch. You got to remember, ultimately, Denver has the final decision in all of this. They can just say, 'Hey, we'll take our losses in the off-season and just hold on to Carmelo for the rest of the year if no one is willing to meet our demands.'

I think they will ... as of now, if they trade Melo, they wont be seen by their fans as the villains ... if they dont and he leaves, then they will be catalogued as the bad ones ... they will get some compensation now as they cant afford both (oncourt downgrade and fans dissaproval) ... DEN has no leverage whatsoever, because even at the scenario of staying with him this season and resigning and trading him next season (after the lockout), the propposals they would receive then (MIA & TOR come to mind), would make the ones offered now look like heaven.

I dunno, rumors are rumors but from everything (on both sides of the situation) we've heard Denver's front office will not lose Melo for nothing. Why would they do that anyway? Take what you can get and move on.

NY needs to sit tight and wait it out till the offseason and sign him outright. No need to part with any of their promising pieces when they can have their cake and eat it too. So glad to see a competitive team in NY again. Its good for NY but most importantly, its good for the NBA in general.
