Re: League considering contraction of lesser profitable teams

I honestly don't get how it's good for the league to eliminate fanbases. ESPN has already made people vomit at the mention of most East coast teams, so the league is supposed to survive off the success of the Boston Celtics and Knicks? Why is a guy in Minnesota suddenly going to be all about not missing NBA basketball for another city when his real team the Wolves are gone? I honestly don't get how anybody could be in favor of this and LeBron is yes, still an idiot.

I see LeBron's point, but especially with the tv ratings so high this year, why would they even do that? And like King Mack said, I dont see people in New Orleans, Toronto, Minnesota, (wherever) picking up another team. I know if my Magic were to be contracted, I would probably be done with the NBA forever. I wouldnt mind if we changed our name though lol

In the overall scheme of things, cutting off one or two teams fanbases really isn't going to hurt the NBA, financially or otherwise at least IMO. Life goes on is pretty much my reasoning

But seriously, I don't care one way or the other, as long as they don't cut more than 2 teams. Anything more than that would be excessive.

Lebron apparently didn't know what contraction meant.

Someone in the ESPN comments section said this in response. It totally fits Lebron to a T.

"See, I never just did things just to do them. Come on, what am I gonna do? Just all of a sudden jump up and grind my feet on somebody's couch like it's something to do? Come on. I got a little more sense then that.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

                Why are you mentioning Toronto?

As much as everyone wants to think they're not a good market, they are. They consistently sell games out and have a great fanbase, so they wouldn't be going anywhere.

I was just listing cities that have been brought up by one person or another. I was mainly focusing on the general point. Certainly no disrespect intended towards any of the teams or cities that I mentioned

Contraction won't happen, even though it would improve the quality of play on the court. The two organizations that immediately spring to mind as likely candidates for contraction are Charlotte and Memphis. Neither has a particularly good team nor a rich team history and unlike other newish bad teams (like Toronto), they can't get butts in the seats. Other teams that could be targets for contraction would be the Clippers, Timberwolves, Hornets, and Nets. None have NBA championships and all of them are in the bottom half of the league in attendance this year.

That's six teams gone with few people outside the teams' cities raising a stink if they were dissolved. The scramble for some of those available players would be insane.

nets aren't going anywhere, they've been bad for the last four seasons but that shouldn't be a reason to write them off every franchise goes through the rebuilding stage some gets lucky and always seem to stay in the spotlight (lakers, spurs, jazz) others don't and it takes time to build a winning program back (knicks, celtics, bulls)... personally i think almost every franchise has earned their keep in the league, however the only way i think a team should be contracted out of the league is if the owner doesn't try to better the team and just tries to penny pinch and as far as attendance goes that doesn't mean jack. the kings, nets, pacers and 76ers are at the bottom but what people sometimes fail to see is during their glory years these teams were in the middle of the pack or top 10 when it came to attendace. People came out to see reggie, they came out to see the run and gun kings in the early to mid 2000s. i remember when arco arena was the loudest arena in the league, just give these teams a few more years and they'll be right back there....

I would love to see contraction if that meant the quality of competition would go up.

Teams like the Raptors, Kings, Nets, Grizzlies, T-Wolves, Clippers, Bobcats are truly wastes of space who will never win a title and whose talent could go elsewhere to beef up a team(Mavs, Orlando, Knicks, Thunder) who can truly stand up to teams like the Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, Heat
