Re: MJ's HoF Speech
I feel the same way about Jordan speech as I did about LeBron decision. I thought they both were excessive ,but thats who they are.
I agree if Jordan "dirt" was aired as much as athletes today he wouldnt be as beloved. Also people love to support winners. If the Heat go on a championship run people will be talking about LeBron the same way they do Jordan. You looking at the Chair MAN!
Number may not tell the whole story ,but they never lie either.Comment

Re: MJ's HoF Speech
Bitter or not, personally I appreciated the candid look into his inner thoughts. I thought it was interesting to hear exactly what inspired his competitiveness. Sure he could have given us the hum drum "I'd like to thank God, my mom and dad, my fans, my barber etc etc" like most people do, but no-one can convince me it wasn't 100% more interesting hearing Jordan talk about exactly what drove him to greatness. " Next time I see Bryan Russel in shorts, I'm coming at him." Come on man, that's classic stuff!Comment

people have always wondered what drove Jordan and what made him so great and what made him what to continue to get better, even after he was already the best player in the game. He answered that in his speech.

Re: MJ's HoF Speech
Actually, the "shot" at Jordan in the LeBron commercial was when he said "Should I just sell shoes?"
MJ is quoted as saying "Republicans buy shoes too" after not endorsing a democratic nominee. Basically, the whole shot was that LeBron shouldn't do anything extracurricular aside from playing basketball and being a company man and sell his shoes. MJ is loved because not only did he win on the court, he never alienated anyone off it. LeBron hasn't won yet, but he already has turned some people aback for numerous reasons, most recently, The Decision. The Media is mad because they pegged him as the next Jordan, but he hasn't lived up to those lofty expectations just yet, so they criticize everything he does...DESPITE the fact that LeBron is a guy who has never been remotely in trouble (I don't even think he's been suspended a game in the NBA).Yeah it was a fake, but it was done so well that it seemed like it was real. Though people do still believe that LeBron's commercial took shots at Jordan with the 'Wanna buy my shiny new shoes' line and the HOF scene. It would be a shot because it takes a shot at Jordan not ever taking any stands on issues and of course his 'republicans buy sneakers too' quote. The HOF thing is believed to be a veiled shot at Jordan due to people not liking his HOF speech a couple years ago. So if Jordan did have a commercial response to LBJ, those would be the reasons why.Comment

Re: MJ's HoF Speech
I had no problem at all with what Jordan said in his speech, because it was real. When you stop and think about who the most successful people around you are, they have the kind of attitude Jordan has. It can translate to anything in this world, call it arrogance if you will, but it's confidence. It's wanting to be the best. Even if you aren't the best, with an attitude like that, you'll be the best you can be. It's a positive outlook on life. When he talks about how people didn't even know it at the time, but they were quietly his motivation to better himself, I immediately think of situations like that in my own life, where I've had that same attitude, and how much better I became because of it. You have to have that sort of passion if you want to be the best you can be at anything in life.
On top of that, he seemed to be having fun during most of it, not taking actual shots at people.
I do agree with the consensus, though. Winning is probably 50% of why he is who he is. But what's wrong with that? The man would kill himself to win, and he DID win. We've seen plenty of guys with talent but don't have that attitude, so they underachieve.Comment

95% of the crap you post about basketball is hyperbole but this might be an understatement. MJ would be the most hated professional athlete ever IMO if he played in the social media era."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Re: MJ's HoF Speech
I think what REALLY opened the door on all of this was the Kobe Bryant scandal, where he was ratting out his teammates for their dirt as well (which is something that should have never made the press, to be fair). It was the sort of thing ESPN always knew about, but rarely covered in detail. It used to just be the headline of _______ divorces from wife after ______ years. End of story. Now they've embraced the "scandal" side of everything.Comment

Re: MJ's HoF Speech
I just now finished watching his speech on Youtube as well. What was wrong with it? Seriously.
I kept hearing after the HoF induction this past year that his speech was terrible, he was a dick, and other negative comments that were put towards his speech. I seen nothing wrong. That was who Mike was. For people to get mad at him for mentioning the people and events that drove him to be the best is just strange to me.
Anyways, I loved the whole "logs in the fire" thing he kept mentioning. That was great.Originally posted by bradtxmaleI like 6 inches. Its not too thin and not too thick. You get the support your body needs.
