Wow, this thread has lost it's direction.

Anyway, a case can be made for either Dwight or D Rose...I feel Derrick deserves it based on his team's record, and the fact that the he has led his team to that record without 2/3's of the big three for a majority of the season (I believe Rose, Noah, and Boozer have played in a total of 20 games this year).

For the Bulls to be where they are, considering the circumstances, is quite a feat...D Rose put that team on his back pretty much the entire season and has them firmly in contention for the #1 seed...impressive

That's all I'm saying. If guys wanna make cases for other people winning the award cool. I got Dwight at second on my list. I just don't agree with this talk from people acting like Derrick Rose doesn't deserve to win the award or some of this other crap that's coming out of people like the Skips of the world.

The NBA should really define what the award means and what it takes to win it. If you're going by the 'take player X off team' criteria then we can pretty much say that Rose means the most to his team. If you take Dwight off the Magic this year they make the playoffs in at least the six, seven or eight spots. You take Bron off the Heat, they make the playoffs somewhere in the four to eight range. You take Rose off the Bulls this year and they don't make the playoffs. The Bulls not having Rose, Boozer or Noah for significant time this year leaving Deng to carry the load himself? No way they make the playoffs. Hell he probably injures himself again from the work put in and this isn't even speaking to the fact that NOBODY including us Bulls fans had this team in the top three of the conference at the begining of the year. Hell I remember there was some people that didn't have them in the top four cause they didn't think the Bulls would be much better than the Hawks with they're "lack of shooters" around Rose. If you wanna use the 'best player on the best team' criteria, of the canidates for the award this year, his team will likely finish with a better record than all of them. Keep in mind not saying they will, but it's looking likely.

You realize everything you wrote about in terms of what it means to be MVP was complete subjective craziness, right?

(See: Pack's post below, sans the Dwight stuff, which I have no comment about. Plus, there is zero way of knowing if you go by the "Take Player X away" hence why I tend to stick more to the stats side of things for MVP.)

PS, once again I think Rose's supporting cast is being underrated a bit. Again, yes, Booz and Noah have not been around a lot, but you're getting above average years from guys like Brewer, Deng, Asik. And the defense of the guys around Rose has been just insanely good.

But at the sametime though the "Take Player X off this team" criteria is just as dumb because everyone is assuming that team would make no other moves and would just stand pat, like with what you're doing with the Bulls right now.

But if we take Duhwight off this CURRENT team of the Magic right now(yes the team with nothing BUT Shooters AND no Gortat to step in for Howard)they'd be fighting for that 8th spot unless you think SVG is THAT great of a Coach where he could get the best out of ANY talent he has.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying go with the take the guy off the team criteria, but there needs to be a defined set of what people are looking for. It's just too much of a hassle sitting around who deserves what with 27 different views on what an MVP should be. Again my problem with all this is the implication that Rose is somehow undeserving of the award.

Thats why I said earlier that If they continued with that, Rose wouldn't get it no matter how deserving.

I think he will though because once the media has their sights dead set on anyone they usually dont change it.

If "take player X off his respective team" is considered, then "does player X make his teammates exponentially better," should be taken into consideration as well...what would "player X's" teammates' production be like without them?...by that criteria it makes the award easier to define.

Without LeBron, D-Wade, and Bosh would maintain all-star level play...its not as if Chalmers and Randolph are having most improved player type seasons due to his acquisition.

Without Dwight, the Magic's defense and offense would take a major hit...but, his supporting cast would most likely maintain their current level of play without significant increase/decrease in production.

By those standards Derrick is leading the race...his presence frees up the entire court so much that it puts the onus on his supporting cast to make plays, and they have. I could go over individual examples of Roses' teammates improved play due to his presence, but there are way too many examples for me to go over...their record is a testament to that.

I think the hype is justified.

rose is the mvp because he's playing at a high level for a team that is overachieving relative to everyone's expectations. he has made improvements in his game in almost every area, is an alternative to players who have routinely been in the talk, and is historical and liked by media.

dwight is not the mvp, because he's playing at a high level, but his team is either achieving or underachieving, depending on who you ask. for him to overcome his team's lack of high-level success, he would need to increase his statistical output to a level where it supercedes his team's performance.

lebron is not the mvp, despite being the best player, because his team is underachieving at an alarming rate relative to, admittedly, overblown preseason expectations. he is still playing at his usual high level, but nothing about his performance feels special. he's also won two already, which usually helps someone else's case.

kobe is not the mvp because he's already won one, because his team is simply achieving, and because he isn't trying to win it.

dirk is not the mvp because he was injured, his team struggled without him and then with him when he comes back, and he lost the favor and attention of the national media.

I really don't care who wins MVP, it's a Regular Season Award That does Nothing For you, Lebron won it two years in a row and still couldn't win it all, in the Regular Season you play against sorry teams alot more so it's easier to look good, when you can dominate in the Playoffs against the Best teams in the League, then we see whos actually better, I'd rather have a Finals MVP than a Regular Season Award...

I do not necessarily disagree with Rose deserving it, but that criteria favors Point Guards HEAVILY imo.

I know he won't get it, but Dwight deserves it more than anyone. Anchor of the Magic defense and has worked his butt off to become good down in the post. Also gets to the line more than anyone

But Rose has been crowned MVP by the media for a while now. No way he can lose it
