    Report: Jerry Sloan to resign

According to the Deseret News, Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan will resign at a press conference later today. Along with Sloan, assistant coach Phil Johnson will step down as well.

This comes after the Salt Lake Tribune reported that Sloan was visibly shaken after a tough loss to the Bulls last night. He kept the media waiting an extended time, which is abnormal for Sloan, and just said there would be a press conference today.

Beat reporter Brian T. Smith said calls to general manager Kevin O'Conner have not been returned.

Press conference at 5pm eastern on NBATV/NBA.com, looks like this is it for Sloan.

    Holy crap!

I never thought I would see the day that Jerry Sloan would resign IN THE MIDDLE OF A SEASON!

Didn't see this coming if it happens. It will be odd to see the Jazz with anyone other than him on the sideline, especially during the middle of the season.

        Oh my gosh.

        I'm in shock.

This is huge. Sloan and Johnson are both stepping down. AK might be traded. Hopefully Corbin is taking over.

I don't know what to think.

Yeah I figured he would get tired of it soon. The current Jazz are destined to always be a first or second round team and that's it.

No light at the end of the tunnel for how they're constructed, and for an old guy like Sloan there's no real point in him continuing a futile cause.

I wonder how this will effect Williams. Will this be thing where it's like 'oh a new coach, a new opportunity a fresh voice' or will it be like 'oh Sloan is gone? so am I'.

The weird thing is...just last week Sloan said that he signed a new contract to coach next year...and now he's leaving?

I think Deron will continue to be Deron. He'll see how the team plays under Coach Corbin and go from there. But I doubt he's going to ask for a trade because of this. Him and Sloan have been at odds before.

Maybe it's me, but it seems classless by Sloan to do this in the middle of the season.

              JMHO.

Man. This is really strange especially given that he just signed an extension or new contract last week I believe.

I really don't think it's as strange as it appears. A one year extension? That's nothing. It's not like he signed a long term extension. When you look at this team, they aren't going to get a title anytime soon. Sloan is nearly 70 years old. I don't doubt that he loves it but he probably just got burned out.

Kind of, but when you're Jerry Sloan you can do this and no harm done.

I doubt it was a 'oh F this and F this team, I'm out'. I'm sure he was hurt making the decision.

He's allowed to do whatever he wants. Sort of like a Bobby Cox type. Sloan is the face of the Jazz.

I'm surprised at this as well, especially after the news of the one year extension.

I mean, it's different if he would have said "I'm resigning at the end of the season" then I'd be fine. But he's quitting. That doesn't sit with me well.

And if D-Will pushed him out, then it's pathetic by all sides.

Re: Report: Jerry Sloan to resign

He did say later on that signing the extension didn't mean that he would be back, although he made it seem that he would wait to the end of the season. Looks like he's not going to make it that far.

I guess he came to this conclusion yesterday, there was reports of a "weird vibe" from him and the GM by the Jazz players.

Re: Report: Jerry Sloan to resign

Sloan has been saying that for the past ten years, that he'll make his choice to come back at the end of the year.

But after all these years, I think Sloan is just getting tired. Deron isn't pushing him out, the ownership is forcing him to quit. I think Coach just finally realized that he can't do it anymore and that it's time for him to step away.

I'm both sadden and happy by it. Coach Sloan got the head coaching job when I was just barely a year old and I grew up with him as the coach. At times, I've called for him to be fired or quit but I never thought this day would come. I hope that with a new coach, the Jazz can have a breath of fresh air and get to the top of the NBA.

Yeah other people around the net are saying that GM and coach went at it.

Where are there any reports of Williams not being happy with Sloan?

                              Careful what you wish for.

There is a good chance that Coach Sloan will always be the best coach the Jazz will ever have.
