Carlisle: Nowitzki is "Top 10 Player in NBA History"

    http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nba...ory?id=6514530

Not sure if I agree with him, but Dirk is an exceptional player in his own right. He's one of only four players to average 25 and 10 over his career in the playoffs. Nowitski's presence on the Mavericks has also been the one constant as he's helped to lead his team to eleven consecutive 50-win seasons.

    Any thoughts?

Yeah, it's splitting hairs. I've got no problem with him being in the discussion though. And with the race being so close this far "up the mountain" I think I'd say he needs a ring to be there though.

A case could be made that he's the best Euro to ever play in the NBA but Top Ten overall is definitely overstating things to a great extent. The guy's a great shooter though and he's a sure fire HOFer in my book.

Sure fire HOF, best Euro ever, probably top 5-7 I've ever seen in my life....but not Top 10 overall.

Hmmm, ten players (or more) that are historically better than Dirk? Let's see:

                  Michael Jordan
                  Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
                  Hakeem Olajuwon
                  Tim Duncan
                  Kevin Garnett
                  Kobe Bryant
                  Wilt Chamberlain
                  Oscar Robertson
                  Julius Erving
                  Magic Johnson
                  Larry Bird
                  Bill Russell
                  Karl Malone
                  Charles Barkley
                  Shaquille O'Neal

Dirk's ability to still play at such a high level is commendable, but he's never brought the total package (offense, defense & rebounding) to be consider a top 10 all-time great. I thank him (and his team) for beating the Lakers, though. He's also the greatest European-born player ever and is behind Duncan and Olajuwon as the best international player ever.

I wouldnt doubt that Nowitzki thinks Carlisle is a top 10 coach "in NBA history" right now also, with the way he's been coaching

                      Not a top ten player.

But I do think he is underrated considering he's been putting up 25-10ish numbers for as long as anyone can remember.

I think it's also noteworthy that (as far back as my NBA memory goes), the Mavs were never really relevant until they drafted Dirk. I always thought that they were just one of those teams like the Bungals in the NFL that just never really put anything good together until Dirk got there and turned them into one of the best teams in the NBA.

But I mean, I'm only 19, I might be way off about the Mavericks franchise history lol

Pretty much. They had some prior success here and there, but never anywhere near a sustained powerhouse.

Dirk and Cuban have been an amazing marriage.

They had some real good teams in the late 80s but throughout the 90s the Mavs were probably the worst franchise in North American pro sports. They would be lucky to win 25 games in those seasons. Im in my 30s and went to high school in the 90s. I had season tickets in those days and remember it well. (Mark Cuban was in the crowd somewhere in those days too). Then Dirk comes along and Cuban buys the team and it's 11 straight 50 win seasons and actual expectations to contend.

Most would consider Karl Malone a top 10 player of all time and he has no ring.
