so i'm watching nowitzki destroy the thunder in game one of the western conference finals, and literally no one can guard him.

so, i'm thinking, who in the history of the league would be able to effectively guard dirk?

    the list is short:
    dennis rodman
    kevin mchale
    scottie pippen
    kevin garnett

    is there anyone else?

No one in history could effectively guard the Dirk that showed up tonight.

Hakeem Olajuwon would be the best option out of anybody in history. He had the size, strength, speed, quickness, quick hands, IQ, amazing footwork and anything else you would need to guard him.

Since this has become the Dirk thread. Man I have to say Dirk has grown up so much.I remember he use to shoot 3's like there was no tomorrow. He didn't post up much. People called him soft. Now he has a counter for everything offensive. He's not that much of a defensive liability anymore. If catches the ball on the elbow or down on that right side in the post. You can just ring up his 2 points.

agreed, i guess my point was that i've never seen anyone who "knows" basketball (respected journalists, analysts or retired players) put him up there as a top ten all-time nba player.

Dirk Nowitzki is the best player EVER to not play College Ball in the US?

no, because you're forgetting guys who went straight from high school. kobe, moses, lebron and kg to name a few. nor that they're all assuredly ahead of him (though kobe and moses are), but that's a whole contingent your statement neglects.

Oh, I'm not asking anyone if he is.

Somebody said that in the WCF Thread so I posted it here.

Now he and Drazen Petrovic might be the best European Players EVER to not play College Ball, that I would agree with.

Moses? I've never understood all the love for that guy. His passing was simply atrocious, he was a turnover machine, and he worked much harder on the offensive glass than on the defensive glass. Too greedy and too one dimensional to be a true great.

Thats a good pick. Others who could make Dirk sweat for his shots would be Dave DeBusschere, Gus Johnson, Nate Thurmond, Bill Russell, and Bill Walton.

Last night Dirk was as unguardable as Jordan in his prime.

Hakeem Olajuwon might be the only one that could've bothered him defensively.

I see you are very high on DeBusschere(too high IMO) but he wouldn't really stand a chance stopping the Dirk we are seeing now. At 6'6" 220 and an average athlete at best he is far too small to really do anything with him. Dirk would be able to get off any shot he wanted. Johnson was a much better athlete than DeBusschere but with him only being 6'6" as well he wouldn't be able to do too much with him.

I think Garnett in his prime would be the best defender for Dirk.
No question Dream would have been more than capable of stepping out on the perimeter and guarding him.

No defender past or present is going to 'stop' him especially under todays hands off rules. Its about containing him, banging, and being persistent.
DeBusschere is underrated among many since his stats are not sufficiently inflated but I remember how great he truly was. Powerful and surprisingly nimble, he would stay attached to Nowitzki's body and hound him all over the court.
