There are two big differences between the NFL and every other American pro sports league. One, the number of games is significantly less that each game individually means more and bigger stadiums can be made for the games. To assume cutting games from the NBA schedule would increase interest is a big assumption.
Interest in College basketball, which plays only about 30 regular season games, picks up around March Madness (postseason). That is exactly the same for the NBA and its season. The difference is the NBA and March Madness is that the NBA playoffs are not seen as much fun to gamble on as March Madness.
This is one of the reasons why the NFL is so popular, people love to gamble on it. Jaguars vs Titans Monday Night Football had higher ratings than the World Series last year and since neither team was real good, one can take a guess and say its probably gambling related.
Second, the major difference between the NFL and other pro leagues is in the media contracts. Since the NFL National TV contract is so big and the fact that almost all 32 teams sell out all their games, the local market size is less relevant than in any other pro sports league. The only thing that a local market size affects is the radio deal and the deal for their 4 preseason games, which is not significant in the grand scheme of things. To assume that other sports leagues can get an NFL type media contract and be guaranteed that almost all of their home games will sell out is a big assumption.
