It will go to a council vote, but it's not going on a ballot.

The interesting part of this press release is that it claims the arena won't be built unless they get commits for both a NBA and NHL team.

There must be quite a bit going on behind the scenes if they feel confident enough to be getting a team from both leagues.

They've clarified that a bit more, its actually only a commitment from one team/league.

After listening to the radio and hearing people with inside league sources, I think its going to be the NHL. It sounds like the Kings are going to stay in Sac with or without the Maloofs and the Hornets have prospective buyers to keep them in NO.

Who else in the NBA moves within the next 3-5 years?

Good luck finding any business willing to take that punishment! That would be suicide for a business! What happens if half the people in the city moves to another area due to a financial slump! The team would no longer be able to make payroll of just the custodians!

                ------------------------
                I see two options here

An eastern team could move out west. I would consider the Wizards, Cavs, Pistons, or Magic. After the move the Timberwolves would need to be in the east as the closest teams are Eastern Conference teams.

                Or

There could be two Western Conference expansion teams. One would be located in Seattle and the other in Vancouver or Bismark, ND (I will explain Bismark in just a bit). In this way either Minnesota or New Orleans would go to the Eastern Conference.

Now about Bismarck. North Dakota is having a population boom like they have never seen before! In Williston and in other towns home building is 6 months behind. Oil companies would hire thousands of truck drivers if the drivers were to show up and apply! There are minor league and other league sports moving in as well! The boom is so great that people are renting parking spaces for their RVs at $1,200 a month in Williston! (Williston has grown from 12k in 2000 to 20k+ in 2010!) http://www.npr.org/2011/09/25/140784...s-north-dakota

There's not going to be expansion. They're having trouble finding an owner for one of their teams as is. And Bismark would be, at best, 4th on the list of trend cities to get a team after Seattle, Kansas City, and Anaheim.

And as far as candidates to move, none of the teams you mentioned are moving. Orlando just built a brand new arena. The next relocation candidates after Sacramento and New Orleans are Memphis and Charlotte.

And Memphis has a big penalty for breaking their lease this soon.

According to Lenny Wilkins, there are a couple teams quietly for sale.

If it would be the Grizzlies, I wouldn't expect it for the next few years. The Grizzlies can't leave until 2014, and it starts to get a little easier after 2015.

I think there are three things that determine whether a team may be movable. The first is tv market. I don't believe the NBA is going to move a team out of the top seven markets ever. Those are New York, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, Bay Area, Dallas, and Boston. Those are very strong markets. I think they're very unlikely to move a team out of the second tier of cities, which are Washington, Atlanta, Houston, and Detroit (which probably saves those teams, since they've all done a very poor job of supporting their teams).

The second is attendance. In order to figure out what teams may or may not move, I actually plugged in attendance figures (and winning %) for the last 5 years. I think there are 3 types of fanbases: the first will support their team no matter what, the second will support a winner, and the third won't support a team either way. Some of the results were actually pretty surprising to me. The Bulls, Blazers, Jazz, Knicks, Heat, and Warriors all get people out to the arena whether they are winning or losing. I was especially surprised by the Heat and Warriors - I didn't expect to see attendance numbers that consistent. Bobcats fans, who didn't do a good job for the first 4 years I looked at, are showing up a lot more this year even though their team is atrocious - they're in the top half of attendance.

There were a lot of cities that support a winner, but not a loser. Detroit is chief among these. The Pistons went from first in attendance to last in the span of just 3 years. They've lost over 9,000 fans a game in that short span. That's amazing to me. And then there's cities that don't really support their teams no matter what. Averaging out the last 5 years (giving equal weight to this season, as I did with all the numbers), the 76ers are 17th in winning %, are 6th in market size, have the 5th biggest arena, and are 25th in attendance. This season, they're 3rd in the east, but are 18th in attendance. That's embarrassing. The Pacers have had some pretty good teams (18th in winning % avg for the last 5 years) but are dead last in attendance. They're 18-12 this year, but still only have 14,000 avg attendance. The Grizzlies, Hornets, Hawks, and Rockets don't put up very good attendance numbers either, whether they are winning or losing.

The third is arena. Seattle lost the Sonics for two reasons - one, Howard Shultz decided to sell the team to Bennett, knowing full well he intended to move the team. Two, KeyArena. It was the oldest arena in the NBA (built in 1966). It was also the second smallest. That doomed it. There are only two arenas in the NBA that are 25 years old or older. That's MSG ('68), and Oracle Arena in Oakland ('66). There are only 6 other arenas that are 20 years old.

All that said, here are the candidates to move in the next handful of years, imo.

Kings: obviously. Their arena opened in 1988 and it's the smallest in the league. They need a new arena. They were in the bottom 5 in attendance four years in a row - they've climbed out of the bottom this year, mostly due to, imo, the aborted move to Anaheim and the one-year reprieve, and they're still in the bottom 7.

Pacers: Their attendance is terrible, they play in smallish market. In the 5 years I sampled, they're top 9 in the east for 4 of those 5 years (they're 10th in the other, but way out of playoff contention). Yet they're still last in attendance over those 5 years.

Grizzlies: It'd be several years before they moved, but they're still towards the bottom of the league in attendance, despite the fact that they're winning. They'll be a difficult team to move, however, though it starts getting easier after 2015.

Hornets: I think it's becoming increasingly obvious that the city of New Orleans simply cannot support an NBA team. It's not the same city it was pre-Katrina. It's by far the smallest market in the NBA. They have a lot of trouble getting people to games. A local buyer may buy the team and keep them there a bit longer, but I think it's only a matter of time before the Hornets move. At least when it's an arena issue, that can be solved, but with New Orleans, they just don't go to games.

Honorable MentionHawks: If they weren't in such a big market, they'd be in big trouble. The Hawks have made the playoffs five years in a row, but attendance has dropped each of the last 3 seasons, and it wasn't that high to start.

I feel for Hornets fans, but the Hornets really need to move. Its obvious the city isn't going to support anyone other than the Saints unless the Hornets become one of the top 4 or 5 in the West, even last year when they were in the playoffs they didn't seem to support the team very well.

Move the Hornets to Seattle, give them back the Sonics name. Move Oklahoma City into the Southwest and Seattle back in the Northwest. And give Charlotte the Hornets name and colors back because the Bobcats are disgusting.

If it weren't for the NBA's relationship with TNT and ATL being the 8th largest market, the Hawks are screaming to be relocated. Their arena deal is awful, they lose money every year, and its only $75m to break the lease in 2012.

I'd be pretty pissed if the Hawks ever moved though. That'd be as big of a loss for the league as moving the Sonics was.
