If I were the Seattle group, I'd start on the anti-trust litigation and not stop it.
But Stern already said they've started talking (in a "general" way) about expansion. So with them opening the tv rights early, I think that's a real possibility. You file an anti-trust suit, you might blow it.

I'd still do it, to be honest. But it's taking a huge risk, imo.

I disagree. They "offered" expansion as an enticement for Seattle to drop its lawsuit in 2009 ... Without an ironclad commitment to an expansion team being put in place within 2 years, the Seattle group would be foolish to let the NBA take the initiative here.

To expand on the history aspect:

        The Kings have moved 5 times in their history <table class="infobox" height="269" width="297"><tbody><tr><td>Founded</td> <td style="text-align: left">1945</td> </tr> <tr> <td>History</td> <td style="text-align: left">Rochester Royals
        1945–1948, 1948-57
        Cincinnati Royals
        1957–72
        Kansas City-Omaha Kings
        1972–75
        Kansas City Kings
        1975–85
        Sacramento Kings
        1985–present</td></tr></tbody></table>
The Supersonics were in Seattle for 41 years prior to them being moved. Not only is there precedent for the Kings being moved, but the fact that the Sonics were in the same place for 4 decades shows that any shred of support the "28 years of support deserve to be rewarded" argument is misplaced at best.

George Maloof says they may consider keeping the team and that the main deal with Hansen is dead. Backup deal still on the table then I suppose.

Just to be clear here: I am happy for the Sacramento fans and hold nothing against them, their city or their Mayor.

I am hopeful that the current Seattle ownership group, the fans and the politicians here continue their efforts.

I admit that I hope OKC will never win a title while Bennett and his heirs own that team but that is another story for another thread.

As was said previously in this thread, it's because Sacramento offered more public funding than Seattle. That's all it came down to. It wasn't a loyalty to Sacramento. Same thing happened in 2008 with OKC and Seattle. Ballmer offered more money then than Ranadive's group did to the Maloofs this year, but the City of Seattle told them to fly a kite because they weren't financing the NBA twice in 12 years.

I'm happy for Kings fans as they will most likely get to keep their team, but I'm sad for the city of Sacramento. The city is $2B in debt, has the highest youth illiteracy rate in the nation, claims to avoid risking bankruptcy they cannot borrow any money until 2022, yet they're giving 1/4 billion dollars to very rich men by privatizing future income. Stern used Ballmer's billions and a short time-frame to pressure Sacramento into a terrible, terrible deal. Stern just cements his legacy as a tyrant.

I think within 12 months, Seattle works with Silver and is awarded an expansion team. And based on Brock Huard's tweets last weekend, Hansen & Ballmer knew that. I hope the Maloofs temporarily keep the Kings and give Ranadive time to get another big investor and take away some of the financial burden on the city of Sac. That'd be a win-win for them.

A lot of the owners (not all of them anymore, but a large number), still follow his lead. He's been there a long time, and so a lot of them will, almost blindly, follow his advice.

David Stern set up meetings and introduced Hansen/Ballmer with the Maloofs, then used them to leverage Sacramento for money. He walked Kevin Johnson and Mark Mastrov through this entire process on how to beat the Seattle offer and got Ranadive involved in the group after Burkle backed out. All this after telling Ballmer if he backed away from saving the Sonics in '08, he'd get the first team available. That's why I blame him. He's a snake.

Well, a 22-8 vote for rejecting a $625 million PSA for a deal that's worth $100 million less kinda implies his tyranny, doesn't it? Either that, or those owners aren't very intelligent or logical...

Silver did say that the vote was a lot closer than 22-8 would imply. A lot of owners were very torn on the issue. But yeah, rejecting a bigger offer in a bigger market going into a new tv deal doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Just saying. I had an oser say he's not evil and works for the owners. I disagree because he had such a big hand in this.

The screw job he helped with the first deal. Just wanted you guys thoughts
