I think it'll be similar to the Jets stuff in the NHL.

Winnipeg Jets moved to Phoenix, and when Winnipeg got their team back, they got to use the Winnipeg Jets name, but none of the history is associated with the team.

Similar with Charlotte in the NBA. Bobcats don't have any history of the Charlotte Hornets.

I could be wrong, but I think I remember reading somewhere that they're going to share the history.

Seattle. Thought it was in one of the links posted in here that the Thunder and new Sonics team (if there ever is one) will share the history of the team.

Re: Agreement for new Seattle arena reached

I know it means absolutely nothing, but I'd like to say, as an Oklahoman, I really feel for Seattle.

I know how it went down. I know Clay Bennett did that city dirty. I do like that man somewhat, because he is probably the man most responsible for bringing a professional franchise to this state. But on the flip side, I know how he went about doing it, and that's just something that I can't really support. Before the Thunder existed, the Sonics were my adopted team. They became my favorite team in the during the 95-96 season and it stayed that way until they moved. I was a fan of the NBA in general. I disliked everyone jumping on the Jordan (and Orlando Magic) bandwagon. I enjoyed watching certain players. I cheered certain guys and hated others. But when people asked who my favorite team was, I'd always respond with the Sonics. [Hakeem's Rockets were a solid 2nd]

Things got moving in Oklahoma after the Hornets set up shop here temporarily. I'll be honest, I didn't expect an NBA team to thrive here. I figured that once the novelty wore off, support would dwindle.

Sidenote: It's only been 4 years, but I can't see this state ever NOT supporting the Thunder as long as KD is here. This state is absolutely in love with this team. Oklahomans as a whole aren't exactly knowledgeable when it comes to basketball, so sometimes the homerism and bias can be a little annoying, but it's great to see nearly the entire state support this franchise the way it does.

Back on topic. Once there were rumors of Seattle possibly relocating, OKC media picked up on it quick. I never thought it would happen. I figured Oklahoma stood an outside shot at an NBA team in a few years. Maybe New Orleans, Toronto, etc. I never realistically expected the Sonics to move. Much less to Oklahoma.

What I'm trying to say is, the Sonics were an established franchise with a NBA title under their belt. When they moved, I couldn't believe it. Sonics fans hate Clay Bennett and they (at least most that I have seen) hate the Thunder. They rightly should. Even though the franchises are at two different spots right now, I can't imagine the anger I would feel if the same thing happened to the current Thunder franchise. From the minute OKC had a team, I vowed I'd be all in regardless of how bad they were and for how long. I had no idea just how quick they would turn things around. (No one predicted anything like this after their first year in OKC)

Just know that not every Oklahoman is happy about the way the entire thing went down. I'll admit that a lot (probably the majority) of Oklahomans have no idea what really transpired behind the scenes. Their knowledge of the situation doesn't extend beyond "Well the people in the Seattle didn't want to pony up for a new arena. Their attendance wasn't even that high. They should of supported their team more." Those that do have a bit more knowledge regarding the situation tend to turn a blind eye to it. (I know I don't focus on it anyway. It's like a dirty little secret I don't want to talk about) I think there's some resentment from Seattle fans towards Thunder supporters, despite Oklahoma citizens not having anything to do with Seattle moving here. I'm not pretending I'm going to mend any fences. But Oklahoma just wanted a TEAM. Any team. It just so happened that Seattle getting screwed became OKC's good fortune. But some Oklahomans are now starting to resent Sonic fans just because they resent the relocation. That's not fair either, because the vast majority of Thunder fans don't understand what really happened in the first place.

So in my opinion, Seattle needs a team like YESTERDAY. The NBA hasn't felt right without the Sonics in it. I'm slowly adapting, and the Thunder have done a great job at helping me forget, but there's still an odd feeling of loss when I look at conference standings/statistics/rosters. etc..And I'm not even from Seattle. Seattle needs to reclaim all it's history and uniforms...everything. Let the Thunder have everything that has transpired in OKC and let Seattle (deservedly) have everything that took place before. Let history show that KD (and Collison) actually played for two different, distinct franchises in their career.

Then the two teams need to bring one of the most intense, bitter sports rivalries into existence.

I know this was long-winded, but I just wanted Sonic fans to know: There are people in Oklahoma that want you guys to get your team back ALMOST as much as you do. Good luck.

                Very classy post okstate19

For the record, I don't hate the Thunder, and I was glad to see them knock the Spurs out if for no other reason it will force the aging Spurs to overhaul.

My disdain is for Bennett and David Stern (whom I think everyone hates regardless LOL). I have no truck with OKC or the players, I view the Thunder as a new team from 2008 and wish them well. I have no connection to them as a Sonics fan.

A vote for the new arena in the city council can come as soon as July so here's hopin!

Great post okstate19. I generally don't have issues with the Thunder players/fans, as they didn't really do anything. Obviously there are certain fans that are idiots, but that's true of every fanbase.

I blame Howard Shultz the most - the fact that he's even allowed in Seattle without having garbage thrown at him anytime he's seen in public is a shame.

Bennett and Stern can also rot in hell.

In any case, the announcement of Ballmer/Nordstroms is pretty awesome IMO.

Howard Shultz...I had almost erased the name from my memory...grrrr.

I've also been hearing noise that Gary Payton has been involved with talks for the arena/new Sonics. I hope he can make some kind of $$$ contribution to earn a stake and become the ambassador for Sonics basketball Who better to represent?

Also hope if we get the Sonics going again that Kevin Calabro will be the commentator again! He's to the Sonics what Dave Niehaus was to the Mariners.

I'm not trying to upset anybody here, but does it really matter if the "new" Sonics get their history back or not? I've never been tied emotionally to a team that has moved/moved in, so I don't really see why it matters all that much. History will always show that guys like Kemp and Payton played for the Seattle Supersonics in the 90s, what team gets to claim "hey that was our franchise" seems kind of, well, irrelevant to me.

So serious question, why does anybody really care who gets to keep the history?

Please note, I could understand not getting back the colors and the name, that would be complete BS, but as far as the history is concerned, I just don't understand why it really matters.

Because if they don't it means they can't use or acknowledge any of the team's history that was made there in that city. For example, in a lot of arenas around the country, teams have video packages or team museums in the arena where they can recognize past players or moments but if they don't have the history then it's just the Sonics in name. I could be wrong, but I also don't think they'd be able to retire Gary Payton's jersey or Shawn Kemp's.

It would kind of suck to have your cities only championship technically not be yours. All the great players that can't have their numbers retired would be awful too. The Sonics were the best franchise in Seattle by far and probably most well-known. It would suck not to be able to acknowledge that.
