But my point is what Dallas did doesn't have anything to do with what OKC should be doing. Jeebs and I (sorry if anyone else has been talking about this too) aren't saying "Dallas played a zone and confused them so OKC needs to play zone." I'm looking at it specifically from the POV of what OKC is working with and how Miami is attacking them in the half court. There are personnel groups they are dead set on using that would be better served in a zone. They also have huge issues if certain players get in foul trouble that could be reduced a bit if a zone was mixed in more. They can pack in a zone to swallow up any drives forcing the Heat to either become a jump shooting team or develop some kind of post presence. Most importantly, it's a drastic shift in the defense that would require adjustment which could slow down momentum and/or change the pace... possibly a significant factor considering the Heat have shown throughout the playoffs that they can struggle in half court sets, despite how well they've played it the last couple of games.
There are downfalls to playing it... I'm not suggesting it should be their base defense, or even that they stick with it for long stints, but it should be mixed in more. Jeebs also pointed out the issues the Thunder have gotten into on transition at times bc or the crossing of the matchups. This also isn't really an issue against a zone.
The thought isn't really related to last year's championship.
