Re: Some Rules that the NBA should lose / add . . .

The only rule that really bothers me is one mentioned above. When the ball doesn't hit the rim and a shot clock violation is called, the other team has to stop, even if they already have the ball and they are about to make a break. It totally ruins the flow of the game.

A lot of the hand checks I don't like, but can live with.

The no-shot blocking rule will NEVER be instituted. Yao would just swat everything out of the way.

Most of the rules I think work well. Some stop the flow of the game, but that might be to the advantage of the team which initiated the foul. In any case, other than the one I mentioned above, I'm cool with the rest.

You can't just get rid of that kind of shot clock violation very easily. If you allow the defense to keep the ball, even if they grab the ball after the buzzer goes off, then you're making it so the results of the play depends on the details of the situation.

The ball could be tipped around for 5 seconds and it can be difficult to determine who had possession at what time.

The ball could be tipped around for a few seconds and the defense may get called for a foul. Flopping would be a problem since even if the offense gets the rebound, it's a shot clock violation so a defensive foul is the only beneficial outcome possible.

The defense could knock the ball out of bounds.

Right now, it's a simple judgement call of whether the defense grabbed possession before the buzzer. In every other situation, it's a turnover. Keep the judgement calls as simple as possible for the refs.

Re: Some Rules that the NBA should lose / add . . .

A lot of people disagree with me but I will tell with an example what rule I'd like to see.

Here's the example: New Jersey Nets - JKidd runs the break after a nice defensive play. Its, say, 3 on 2. Kidd makes a nice fakeout on the man trying to guard him in order to make a perfect dish to Jefferson. Jefferson looks like he has a nice lane to the basket but is fouled in the act of shooting on a dunk/layup attempt. Jefferson makes both free throws.

What I dont like about this situation is that Kidd does not get an assist. The rules clearly state that an assist is awarded to someone who passes to someone who makes a field goal. I think this should be modified to say "someone who scores a point". After all, many NBA rules are instituted based on "possessions" and free throw attempts fall under the same possession as the attempted layup.

As I said before, most people disagree with me on this but I believe it would be more fair to whomever set up the foulee with the successful pass.

An interesting suggestion but I doubt that rule would get implemented. If it was Jason Kidd would average like 25 assists per game.

what if the guy only hits 1 ft, would it count as half an assist? i've heard that idea kicked around, but i hope it stays as is for now.

Yeah, then all the retired players would get eclipsed in the record books. John Stockton would be forgotten.
