Are fair weather fans always bad though?
Like in the Clippers example. Is it bad for some people to take interest in a team because what was once the worst team in the league is now fun and exciting to watch?
I guess it's harder for me because I don't live in, or anywhere close to, and NBA city.
I didn't like Miami before LeBron arrived, but I also didn't dislike them. I was a LeBron fan when he was still in HS, I wanted to see him succeed and I've been for him ever since.. Does that make me a "bad fan" that I root for him to do well in Miami?Comment

It's not the fact that they support them...
They are normally the first one to rub it in peoples faces or brag when their "team" is doing well.
I watch the Bucks games, want them to do well and they are my "team" no matter what... But I honestly couldn't care less about the NBA so even if the Bucks magically won the finals this year I wouldn't be running around asking people if they saw how amazing they played. I wouldn't consider myself fair weather, because my interest level status the same no matter how they are doing.
You admit you want the Heat to do well for LeBron, so that's okay... You admit it.
Its one thing to take an interest in a team, but another to be a fan and claim as such. I'll use the Clippers. Nobody out here was a fan of them before. Now I see more LAC stuff around people that claim to be big "true" Clippers fans. If they were true fans of the team, they would have been wearing that stuff for years, not just starting now.Last edited by ubernoob; 04-09-2013, 06:50 AM.badComment

Maybe it's because I've lived in the area for a few years now but all the Lakers fans that I know (that I consider true fans) are pretty good.
Nationwide their fan base disgusts me, but that's not Lakers exclusive. That goes for any successful team in a big market in any sport (Yankees, Cowboys, Pats, Red Sox, etc)badComment

Re: Best/Worst fanbases?
Pretty much if your team goes 66-16 and you guys win the chip, that's cool. But when you go 21-61 and you're no where to be found, you're lame. I had to call my father out last year for doing that crap.
Last year he came over with an LA Kings Championship hat. Dude doesn't watch hockey, didn't watch a single game of the playoffs, when I would go over there and flip to the hockey game, he'd say, "go back to the game, ain't nobody stuttin' this crap" (whatever 'stuttin' means). But all of a sudden, 5 minutes away from winning, I'm getting texts and seeing Facebook posts like, "WE DID IT!", "LA BABY!" and it happened to be the most annoying thing I've come to experience. I feel like its disrespectful to those fans who put in the hours and hours, and go through the complete grind of a season with their favorite team.
Sure enough, season starts, not one of those persons has yet to mention the Kings. Stupid Los Angeles.Comment

The large majority of my friends are Laker fans. And I honestly think its because around the time they were old enough to become serious fans of NBA basketball the Lakers were winning rings with Kobe and Shaq.
Pretty much all of them love the Lakers, Kobe, and Duke for college basketball.. I don't know if I would call them band-wagon fans but they were definitely routing for what was "convenient" at the time.
It's the only explanation I can think of. I live in Arkansas and that is nowhere close to LA or to North Carolina and they all act like they are the most hardcore, life-long Laker and Duke fans around.. It's overly annoying. Of course they all think Kobe is the best player in the league as well..Comment

Re: Best/Worst fanbases?
Honestly every fanbase does have their fairweather fans, yes that's a fact. Thing is some are just worse than others is the point, like the way Red Sox fans became completely unbearable after they finally won the World Series. Even my beloved Bulls has our share of fairweathers. I still remember all the Bulls fans coming out of every crack and crevice imaginable back in the 90's only to disappear the second GOAT did and suddenly showed back up Laker fans in 2000.
Even now, I was out at a bar in the city last year before the playoffs and they were doing this Bulls trivia contest for prizes. Anyway there were some guys in it and a few girls all decked out head to toe in Bulls gear and talking about how they're huge die hard Bulls fans or whatever. First red flag, all the player specific gear that any of them wore was Derrick Rose only with a Jordan jersey or two or three in the mix. I didn't participate in the contest, I just watched, but I really should've cause they were the easiest questions I've ever heard sports related in my life. One of the questions I **** you not was to name the player who currently wears number 9 for the Bulls. Six of the ten people participating missed it before someone finally guessed Luol Deng. Another question was 'who hit the game winning three pointer in the 1993 NBA Finals to give the Bulls their third NBA title?' Now I'm thinking at that point surely the guys in the Jordan jerseys know that one, being die hards and all. Not one person got it right. The only names that came up as guesses? Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. I was a little insulted that not even at least Toni Kukoc was thrown out there as a wild guess. Really was a sad sight. Even despite that though those fairweather fans really aren't as bad as the overly cocky, obnoxiously vocal fanbases of teams like the Lakers and Heat.Last edited by King_B_Mack; 04-09-2013, 03:36 PM.Comment

Player specific fans(talking about the ones who don't have a team)I can't stand because they'll defend that player like he can do absolutely no wrong. You say anything that isn't positive about them, even if you have some evidence to support your case then you get labeled with the ***** tag in a hot minute. This isn't to say all of them are like that BTW because they're not.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: Best/Worst fanbases?
No offense, this is just what I've observed living in various places and attending live events.
The Best:
San Antonio- The Spurs are a way of life in that area. It is no joke and the only fanbase that I would consider as rabid as Packer, Raider, or Steeler fans.
Golden St.- Never been to a game there but they travel well and support the team whether they are good or bad.
New York Knicks- Lived in NYC for four years and nearly EVERYBODY has an opinion on the Knicks good or bad. They were terrible when I was there and you heard about it all the time.
Dallas- Another fanbase thats serious about their team. Remember Playmakers?
Indiana- Really knowledgeable fans who travel very well.
Lakers- Annoying as crap but they really do have a huge national following.
The worst:
Miami- And it isnt even close to me. Bandwagoners to the tee. Going to a game in Miami is terrible. They look at you like an idiot for cheering!
Atlanta- Another fanbase who is terribly indefferent to its team. They could go 20-62 or 62-20 and there wouldn't be a difference.
New Orleans- I dont even think NO fans know that they have a team.
Golden State? Bwhahahahaha!Comment
