Can we expand on this point? Does this come in to play since the Big three became free agents?

I would like to know as well..

I honestly don't pay much attention to the off the court stuff, I'm somewhat ignorant to a lot of the new CBA rules and contracts and such.

taken directly from the cbafq.com site

"37. Can a team with cap room sign all the free agents it wants (up to the salary cap) and THEN re-sign its own free agents using the Bird exception? A team's ability to do this is very limited. The team's free agents continue to be included in team salary. This charge is called the "free agent amount," which is a form of cap hold. There may not be enough money available under the cap to sign another team's free agent, because the team's own free agents are taking up all its cap room"

for warning, ive heard of this guy and some radio interviews with him, but not sure if its credible

---if you are wondering about lebrons contract length, its so he can get a new, even larger $ value contract when the TV deal is done

John Canzano @johncanzanobft · 2h LeBron will give zero discount to Heat. Will be max money with short duration (1-2 years).

John Canzano @johncanzanobft · 2h Chris Bosh’s 5-year deal with Miami expected to start at $11 million in year 1. Dwyane Wade will sign four years, $12 million in year 1

Bird rights allow teams who drafted players to resign that player over the cap to a certain point, for example the Cavs can go up to their 63.4 Mil and then sign the deal with Irving, now I believe you can only go up to 77 Mil and but that's only to sign your own Free Agents so the Cavs couldn't sign Irving, get to the cap and then sign Chandler Parsons for example. and I believe once a player is traded from the team who drafts him, his bird rights follow, but once they leave from FA then they lose their bird rights. Or so that's how I always heard it works.

So since Bosh, Wade, Bron, UD, Bird, all opted out does that mean all of them lost bird rights? Or would they only lose them by signing elsewhere?

All I know is, Miami needs to bring last years draft choice back over to the league this year.

That's what I originally thought. I thought I had saw someone say they lost them by opting out, so I wasn't sure.

only if they sign elsewhere, again Miami still cant go over 77 Mil or they will have to start paying penalties for being repeat offenders, no one knows how much, but its supposedly a very high amount which is why you don't see repeat offenders

Back to the question at hand, who's a C the Cavs could move Waiters for if they got one of the SFs in FA like a Hayward or Parsons or even (yuck) Ariza. Don't forget they also have Sergei Karasev as a 2/3 option as well ,if they want to move Waiters, who is very highly thought of with the Cavs FO

That's overpaying for Meeks, but they're desperate for a shooter and a floor-spacer. That was a signing Detroit had to make.
