    Re: 2014 Off-Season Thread

I know they ain't nothing to write home about, but I feel like defense means less and less in the league. It's become much more about offense and just capitalizing on mistakes on defense rather than actually being good at defense. A scorer will usually get his against any team. When it comes to scoring and defense, it seems like it's always one or the other now. Aside from the top dudes like Lebron, Paul George, or CP3, you either get labeled as a defender or as a scorer. Whoever Kyrie, Dion, Ray are up against, there's a good chance they aren't good at defense either. If they are good at defense, then they aren't going to score half the points those guys score.

What I'm trying to say is that you can live with a lack of defense from them as long as they're scoring more than their matchup and you can put a guy like Wiggins or Lebron on the other teams best player.

Umm, didn't the Heat just get dominated in the Finals because they couldn't guard the Spurs/play defense at all? Individual one on one defense might not be as important as before (I still think it is) but team defense is huge. If you can't guard anyone you're not going to win the title.

That one still hurts man. Brandon Roy was fun to watch. I don't wish injury on anybody but why does it have to be people like him? We gotta lose the Greg Oden's and Brandon Roy's of the world to injury and keep the Von Wafer's and Ryan Hollins'?

Serious question, how good could have Portland been if Oden/Roy stayed healthy to go along with Aldridge? That would have been a "big 3". They'd all be in their primes right now too... **** injuries.

I think it shows the opposite actually. Offense > defense. The Spurs have the best offensive system and ball movement in the league. It wouldn't have mattered what kind of defense the Heat played because you can't really stop it. You stop TP's dribble drive then he'll just pass to a cutter or Duncan at the post or swing it to Diaw or Manu for a drive. That's if you can stop him from the pick and roll which usually results in a score if you don't double or switch, which creates a mismatch in itself. It wouldn't matter how good on ball defense you can play because there's always a way to beat it. The offensive player has the advantage. You have to live with it, hope they miss, and try to outscore them when you get the ball and make good on your chances and their mistakes.

The Spurs have the ideal team like the Cavs should try to build like. Their main defense comes from Kawhi guarding the other teams best player and Duncan/Tiago protecting the rim. They don't rely on TP, Danny Green, Patty Mills, Manu to stop their man...but they have them to play smart team defense and force and capitalize on mistakes. That's all Kyrie/Dion/Ray have to do and I think anyone can play team defense if you put the effort in.

If Cleveland starts Wiggins, LeBron, Thompson, Varejao I think they'll have a pretty solid defensive group..

Kyrie is not a very good defender, but he's quick enough to not be a liability.. "Bad defense" individually is pretty overblown here on OS.

Team defense greatly, by a mile, outweighs individual defense. Kyrie isn't going to slow them down to the point they are a bad defensive unit. Statistically they were a middle of the pack team defensively last season.. Adding LeBron and Wiggins should only improve that, even if their is a "growing process" for Wiggins.

Pretty damn good, IMO.. I think Roy was better than Lillard, and would definitely be a large upgrade over him now if he continued to grow and improve..

Greg is somewhat unknown.. But I definitely believe he would be among the best big men in the league. Just watching him this past season hobble around and still clear off his man and slam it home.. He would have been a very rare combo of power and skill. He always came off as very unselfish to me too. I really hope a team out there gives him a shot again.

Look out for the Mavs next year. I wouldn't be surprised if they slipped into the 2nd seed. They are STACKED. Imagine if they got Melo...

I think they would have been at least a WCF participant at a few different points with legit title aspirations eventually.

Man just thinking about that makes me sad for the reasons that we'll never know and just how bad that 2006 draft was for my Bulls and how good it was for the Blazers. They walked out of that draft with Lamarcus Aldridge, Brandon Roy and Joel Freeland. We walked out of there with Tyrus Thomas and Thabo Sefolosha. We drafted Aldridge and traded him for Tyrus freakin Thomas. Paxson almost deserves to be retroactively fired today for that decision.

Dallas played SA better than anyone in the playoffs and have only gotten better this off-season. Although, losing Calderon could hurt. Come playoff time they're going to be a dangerous team to go up against. I'd say they're easily in my top 3-4 teams to win it all next year.

Extra note on Ray Allen. Definitely feel he's one of those guys that can be huge to have around young players. The "veteran leadership" card can be overblown but he seems like someone who you can't help but learn from. Wiggins coming in with both LeBron and Ray to observe and pick up good habits from is huge.

Don't wanna get too confident about the Mavs but this roster is shaping up very nicely. Hopefully it will shut up the idiots around Dallas and other places that still whine about Cuban not resigning the whole damn championship squad. If he had have done that we would be nowhere near what we could potentially be this season.

Mavs are close with Jameer Nelson too, apparently they wanna rotate Nelson, Harris and Felton and use them at the 2 some as well so they can constantly play up tempo.

I have no idea why more teams aren't looking at Nelson. Houston, LAC, Indiana.. They could all really use a back up PG.

I like Nelson, I feel he's being slightly overlooked and could probably start for you guys, considering Harris seems ok with coming off the bench and Felton is Felton..

Yeah, I think Jameer definitely starts for us. He's a better long range threat than either Harris or Felton and he plays a much more composed and organized game at the point than either one of them either. Harris is much better suited coming off the bench with his speed and defensive ability. I have a feeling he'll likely be playing at the end of close games too.
