Re: 2015 Offseason Thread
I know there is a huge difference between pro and college athletics. I was just using that as an example. I honestly thought there would be more college ADs that made a profit. I still believe there could be a couple of teams (1 or 2) that are losing money. And the only way they would be making it is through the revenue sharing.Comment

Re: 2015 Offseason Thread
Those articles (from last year) are reporting that the NBPA was advising all free agents to invoke an 18-month payment cycle into their new contracts for the 16-17 season in order to be prepared financially for the possibility of a lockout...take less during the season so they could survive a potentially long lockout. That has nothing to do with the lengths of the contracts players are/were signing, which is totally related to the influx of money from the new TV deal. The union put the extended payment plan in the last bargained agreement for players that can't manage their money so they don't create dissent and give in to the owner's demands during an extended work stoppage...simply a reminder it was available and to create a more unified front against the owners.
Yes the article is old thats the point. It may not be all but my point is this was talked about a year ago.
And the crazy interesting part is the owners get paid whether there is a lockout or notComment

Jazz sign European center Tibor Pleiss to a 3-year deal.
The Jazz earned the rights to Pleiss by trading Enes Kanter to OKC. He's 7'3" and can shoot threes, so I'm happy.Twitter: @TyroneisMaximus

Buddy the cba is coming up in another year and thats exactly why you see so Many 2 year deals with player opt outs.

A fair amount of the contracts signed this offseason (2015) are 2yrs with an opt out after 1yr or straight one year deals in order to test the market again next offseason (2016) when there is more money around due to the cap increase/TV money. If anything, signing a long-term deal would be more advantageous to protect against a change in the CBA that is even more unfavorable than what is currently in place. Next offseason will be when most of these players will try to get as many years as possible with the new salary rates to protect from another bad labor deal that could happen in 2017.
It is crazy the owners will still get TV money if there is a lockout, but the TV providers are/were stupid enough to agree to it to secure broadcasting rights...it looks like both sides are preparing for the inevitable.XBL & PSN: zasbury25Comment

2015 Offseason Thread
We didn't need any of these last few posts on the topic to know that. A number of us already said that when the pen was put to paper on this deal at the time

Re: 2015 Offseason Thread
Thats pretty much what I was saying, but I think its more of the NBAPA that wants it because they want more revenue and also more insurance coverage for retired players, plus the new tv contracts coming up and the players are getting less of the share from the last CBA
Silver said in his conference yesterday they want to avoid that, but I think this new lady is out for bloodComment

Adam Silver met the media in Las Vegas on Tuesday, and the dollars of league business were discussed more than anything else.
Despite a record broadcasting rights deal that will bring in excess of $2 billion, there are still individual teams that are losing money on an annual basis. And with the players guaranteed about 50 percent of the revenue, and with a salary cap in place that puts artificial limits on player salaries, that means owners will need to cut a check to the players to make up the difference.
Ken Berger of CBSSports.com:
Silver revealed Tuesday after meeting with league owners that the NBA is projecting that it will have to write a nearly $500 million shortfall check to the players after the 2016-17 season. There was a shortfall in the players’ guaranteed 50 percent of revenue for this past season, and there could be another one after ’15-’16, as well.
“That’s not, of course, the ideal outcome from our standpoint,” Silver said. “It’s not something we predicted when we went into this collective bargaining agreement.” …
The upshot is that, in the last three years before either side can opt out of the CBA, players’ negotiated contracts will come in lower than their guaranteed share of 50-51 percent – significantly lower in ’16-’17. And, as one league source told me hypothetically, there are going to be a lot of owners who will look at those numbers and say, “If they’re only worth 46 percent, why the hell are we paying them 50?”
That last part may be the reason that ownership opts out of the current collective bargaining agreement to lock out the players in 2017.
A lot of this is rhetoric, of course — the same type that has been used by NBPA director Michele Roberts on more than one occasion. But if a large segment of owners truly believe that continuing to give the players 50 percent of revenues seems like a rip-off, then a work stoppage of some length would seem to be unavoidable a couple of years from now.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: 2015 Offseason Thread
Booooo!!!!
Would rather the team spent their remaining roster spots on young, project players or veterans that could actually help. Bonner is past the point of being useful as a NBA player, shot less than 40% from three-point range and that is his only skill, looking terrible last season plodding up and down the court.
Oh, well. Hopefully they dump Reggie Williams soon and look for a veteran swingman to mentor J. Simmons. That kid has looked mighty impressive so far in the Summer League.
