I never took issue with the Kobe deal. It was legacy pay from a team that was nowhere near contention but still needed to put butts in the seats. Anyone who thought it was a pure basketball decision was naïve.

Didn't the Lakers also have that TV deal kick in as well?

I imagine that also played a factor in them giving him that deal, but I do agree with you in that it was moreso a business decision than it was a Basketball one.

As a long time Heat fan, taking into account what occurred prior to him leaving, I'm happy to see Wade move on and the team not follow the Laker path. Pains me to a degree to see Wade go obviously and we're fans of both the players and the franchise but at the cost, for the franchise, it wasn't a smart move. I thought Kobe cost the Lakers, I'm glad it hasn't cost the Heat and I'm excited about our future again and seeing what Riley can do.

That's just my opinion as a fan of course. I'm sure there are others that feel differently.

Yeah, it's tough to tell Time Warner, "I know you just gave us a billion dollars but we think we're going to let our most marketable player walk over 30m and roll with Julius Randle."

The thing is, I feel like D Wade IS the Heat. He's the reason I personally got into basketball back in 2006. I have faint memories of Kobe and Shaq, MJ in Washington. But I didn't start consistently watching basketball until 2006, our first championship season. So I've only really watched Miami Heat basketball with him on the team.
My fear is that in this day and age, Riley's way of doing things is too old school. Challenging players to be "the man" and to be tough seems like a thing of the past. And from what I'm hearing, the way he handled this situation was absolutely disgusting. To not even call Wade is absurd to me. Regardless of what his plans are for the franchise, I feel like what happened here completely went against the "family" and "loyalty" he preaches. How is a FA going to want to come here if the face of the franchise was treated this way?

Easy there young Heat fan. You did not go through 1988 - 1993. Or when Zo had the Kidney illness or the post fat Shaq debacle of 2007/08. Riley is fine. Divorce is never nice. This is what took place. A divorce. There is no nice way to sever ties and that is exactly what The Heat did here.

The team was content to move on. You're apparently not. I have learned from the past that if you hang on too long to a old player, you set the team back years upon years unless you can surround them with younger talent. Riley knows Wade can't give anymore than what he did last season and that was his first healthy year...in a very long time. I love Dwyane. The Greatest Miami Sports star ever. And yes he was the face of the franchise. But from everything I just heard (and this is pure speculation) he actually asked Wade to take a 10MM one year deal so he would have full cap flexability to really go after Durant. Then with his full Bird Rights he was going to max him at 37MM next season. If this was true then that is where the 10MM number came from. And Wade flat out did not trust Riley would do that next off-season. I can't blame him for not trusting that. It's a business in the end. But again all speculation.

The team feels it's time to find the next face of the franchise. Either your on board....or not. Either your a fan or not. Con job? If your going to be a player lover....then your bandwagon jumper. I follow my team. Whomever plays for them is who I root for. Will I have a soft spot in my heart for Wade? Oh of course and I will always root for him in some way and wish him nothing but the best. I even pulled for Lebron this year in that Finals. He was God like. Once my team is knocked out....I can root for other teams as an NBA fan. But during the season and the post season, if my team is in it. Everyone else can suck it. LOL.

I guess I am too old school. It's not complicated. Do I always agree with management? Hell no. But the resume and equity Riley has built in Miami is good enough for me. I have seen him re-shape this team 4 times. The guy knows what he is doing. It sucks we lost Wade. It really does. I am very sad today. But life goes on. I wish him well. And look forward to seeing his number raised to the rafters and stay there in infamy.

Time to rebuild again. This is the fun part Heat fans....crazy as it sounds it is. It will make the next title that much sweeter.

From Zack Lowe. Something to keep in mind going forward regarding future deals:

Trading a player like Millsap is painful. He emerged last season as one of the 15 or 20 best players in the league, at worst. But teams are looking ahead at the $110 million mega-cap and are thinking hard about whether age 30-ish players who will demand close to the max are worth it.

This is in part the inevitable by-product of the shorter contracts the NBA and union negotiated in the 2011 collective bargaining deal. Those marathon David Lee deals used to carry players through their entire primes and spit them back out into free agency around age 32. Any team signing a player at that age knows they are paying for decline.

Under the new CBA, more players are hitting free agency in their late 20s and very early 30s, and sometimes twice in that span. Good for them. They should max out their earnings and exercise as much control over their careers as they can. For teams, the uncertainty is nerve-wracking.

We've already seen the Thunder and Bulls trade two free agents-to-be, Serge Ibaka and Derrick Rose, a year ahead of the $110 million cap. The Knicks expect Rose to bounce back in a contract season, but that expectation is precisely why Chicago traded him. Knowing what they know about Rose's knees, the Bulls did not want to trap themselves into paying Rose $100 million-plus after one good rebound season.

We might see more teams with impending free agents in this age range consider moving them. Unfortunately for tradeniks, the two most interesting potential candidates are point guards on very good teams who won't deal them: Kyle Lowry and Chris Paul. Both have player options for 2017-18 that they will almost certainly decline to dip into free agency. Paul will be 32 at that point, with knee injuries and a ton of minutes in the rearview. Lowry will be 31. Point guards do not typically age well, though perhaps Lowry playing as backup for the first half of his career bodes well for his longevity.

If they play to their normal levels this season, both will seek the max amid another summer of frenzied spending. Paying a 30-plus point guard $35 million per year during a long-term deal is fraught with downside risk. The Grizzlies at least got Mike Conley while he's 28 (he'll turn 29 in October) on the Horford-level max under the $94 million cap.

The list of guys in this sweet spot is pretty short. Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans, both free agents a year from now, are just 26. Teams have concerns about giving them huge money, but age isn't one of them. Danilo Gallinari is interesting. He'll be 29 next summer, with a history of knee issues. The Nuggets extended him once. Do they want to do it again, for even more money?

These new money deals look bloated compared to contracts signed under the pre-2015 cap, but those cheapo older contracts in a way subsidize some risk on fat new ones. If you have Markieff Morris and John Wall under contracts that now look absurdly low, you can gamble on overpaying a couple of free agents this summer and next.

The league is entering a strange phase where teams will carry two types of contracts: old cap and new cap. Once the old-cap contracts cycle out, all veteran contracts will be more or less equivalent. A contract that looks ugly and risky now will be normal in two years.

In the meantime, opportunistic teams will chase guys locked into old-cap contracts. Detroit did that in trading for Tobias Harris. The Timberwolves were aggressive in chasing Khris Middleton at last season's deadline. Teams should call the Magic about Nikola Vucevic, still with three years left on his old-cap deal, now that Orlando has signed approximately 19 big men. Vucevic is a borderline All-Star making Solomon Hill money.

Faried makes a hair less than Vucevic. You can bring Faried off the bench now and not feel as if you are wasting an investment. (It's not 100 percent clear the Hawks would have kept Faried if the Denver trade had gone through).

Fortunately it was the only struggle we had. Speaks volumes about Pat's reign here and why we love him. He consistently puts out a competitive team for us to enjoy.

He's not going to go elsewhere. The only person that knows if he's coming back or retiring is him so there's not really a lot for people to say on that. He's not even a free agent, he accepted his option. It's just a matter of if he plays or not.

Oh trust me, I remember that. Going through middle school repping the Heat during that time was not fun at all. In the end, I just hope the way everything supposedly ended doesn't impact our future negotiations.
