When Germany starts beating every opponent 7-0 while a lot of their stars stay home, then we'd have an accurate
comparison.
To me this is like playing 2K on Pro and then celebrating because you are blowing out every team. Should the US send a weaker team because the world isn't as good? Of course not. This is the premier international basketball tournament.
But it isn't fun for me to watch teams get blown out by 40-50 points all the while, the US isn't even trying hard.Originally posted by My WifeComment

Like I said, I just don't think the purpose of the Olympics is to be fun lol. It's to see who is the best. If they want to crown us and take the game out of the Olympics that's one thing, but we show up every 4 years to bring the medal home, not to entertain. How many different sports are in the Olympics? How many do most people care about in the first place? It doesn't matter, because the point is to see who the winner is, not make it a fun race to the end IMO.Originally posted by G PericoComment

No the purpose of the Olympics is to make money. The US didn't regularly send professionals before '92. At that time it was about being the best amateur. That is no longer the case.

I'll ignore the general history of the Olympics because countries have been cheating and making a joke of it for decades. The reason we stopped sending amateurs is because other countries were setting the up programs to train people full time to win. That's about as unamateur as it gets. Also because a team of our amateurs lost to a team of professionals, we didn't even start it.
And again on the entertainment value, that's kind of my point. Handball isnt entertaining to me. I don't give a **** about curling. I have no intention of watching dudes row for even a second. But they're all in the Olympics, because people want to prove they're the best. It's not about entertainment, it's about winning and being the best.Originally posted by G PericoComment

I understand what the purpose of the Olympics is, and would never suggest we as a country send lesser talent for the sole purpose to please my viewing needs, but I see no reason to spend my free time watching our men's basketball team beat up on others by 30+ points. Not until the medal rounds, anyway.
And no that does not mean I will be watching less popular sports because the level of competition is more balanced. All it means is I personally would rather spend 2 hours doing something else.Comment

We get it, ya'll don't want to watch blowout Basketball between countries.
Just hope I don't hear about ya'll watching the Warriors play unless it's against the Spurs or Cavs, lol.
I take it you won't be watching much Eastern Conference Basketball then when we all know who will be coming out of the East next year...I personally don't see much entertainment value in a competition that isn't a competition.#RespectTheCultureComment

Used to like the Olympics as a kid but haven't felt it in a long time.
One reason may be the way they televise is dumb. It's harder to watch the events you're interested in now, in the 21st century, than it was 20-30 years ago.
NBC holding events on tape delay for prime time, then teasing it for hours and in the meantime, not allowing anyone else to show clips.
Kills the point of live sports.
As for Olympics Basketball, it seems the NBA players don't even have to play as hard as they would in a preseason game, so it's hard to take it seriously.
There was a time when there were 2 or 3 strong countries which would challenge the US team but it seems most of the players on those teams are now old and they haven't had younger players in those national teams to replace them.Comment

Those countries are going thru cycles just like we had to go thru ours after 04.
And you're basing this on what exactly? Coach K is definitely taking it serious, and so is Gregg Popovich.
I'd have a hard time seeing those guys tell the players to go out there and just hang loose like its an all star game.
Domination is what it's about... that's what they should do.
Watching the other sports is also a lot of fun, like the qualifiers for swimming last night is always a blast.
I think NBC still has the best sports coverage of events, camera angles, etc....
The NBA is silly for skipping them for disney but i understand its about money more than sports itself.Comment
