If I were Utah, I'd prefer Hood/Burks/Favors over KCP any day of the week. KCP simply doesn't have the numbers to justify burning tons of money on him. He's heading to the Nets after they get their cap space back, Brooklyn will take a flyer on him.

I figure KCP will ink a Dion Waiters "prove it deal" with a team that'll give him major minutes, ball out, and get a team to sign him long-term next summer.

I think the part where theres a time to negotiate but still can't sign is what throws it off. Like you said, if Otto agrees to sign his offer sheet on July 1, it's almost 2 weeks on hold in the most fast moving time of the year and that's ridiculous.

Outside of that, I still think it makes sense. 6 days seems like a lot, but 2 days to respond to a multimillion dollar contract offer doesn't seem like a lot, or 2 days to fly a guy potentially across the country or world for a physical and then another 2 to get the results. It only seems excessive in aggregate.

Yeah I hate it because I love AB but he was the most logical piece to go since we only have him one more year and no way we could afford him after that.

Assuming this means Crowder stays I'm ok with it, I still have a feeling he can't possibly be happy right now though.

Hoping it means Smart will be extended for sure.

Also means if the Celtics dump Jackson and Mickey they can bring Yabusele over this year and it sounds like that's the plan.

I wish I understood how this stuff works because it confuses me how it makes more sense to let KCP go for nothing.

I didn't want him at $25M a year, but I didn't think it was that or nothing

This article basically sums it up:

Detroit — saddled in luxury tax with more than $66 million committed to Andre Drummond, Reggie Jackson, Tobias Harris and Jon Leuer for next season alone — was expected to match any competing offers on Pope. The collective bargaining agreement allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own players; not so much with other free agents.

But Detroit became hard-capped after signing Langston Galloway and rookie Luke Kennard. The Pistons also finalized a trade that sent Marcus Morris to the Celtics for Avery Bradley, an established two-way shooting guard.

After that trade, the Pistons are only $16.5 million beneath the NBA’s hard cap, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, meaning they could not match any offers on Pope if they were more expensive than that number.

Another painful decision with this Hardaway Jr signing. What in the blue hell? So Knicks, we're quiet all offseason after canning Phil, looking like we're going to go young and rebuild, and then we pull of a shockingly stupid move like this? Friggin Mills...

I thought Crowder was still linked to the S&T they're trying to do with the Jazz?

Or does the trade make that null now?

The Bradley for Morris swap saved enough money to sign Hayward to the Max, so moving Crowder out isn't necessary.
