    Re: 2017 Offseason Thread

Wanna get your guys opinion on a trade I saw a guy who works on sports radio here Boston threw out a couple weeks ago. I think it's a good deal for both sides but wanna see what others think. He said that GS should flip Klay to the Celtics for Bradley, Crowder, and a 2018 non Brooklyn pick. For obvious reasons the Celtics would make the trade. But his reasoning for why GS would do it was that they would lose a little bit of quality but also gain something like $10 million in cap space.

Bradley will probably get a max or near max offer when his contract expires at then end of next season, no way this deal happens.

If the Warriors win this year, they will want to keep the roster intact as much as possible -- though both centers and D. West may look for bigger paydays or retire in the case of West.

Especially when KD has supposedly indicated he's willing to take a few million less to keep key role players.

But someone made a great point, that if KD is taking a few million less, the pressure will be on the owners to keep this team together at almost all costs.

Not just this year but after next season and the season after that, when KD will be eligible for a super max, Draymond maybe a super max and Klay a max.

Then their luxury tax bill becomes huge. Lacob is rich but not that rich.

However, the value of the team has increased several times since he bought it and he wants to build that new arena, not just for basketball but concerts and other events.

So if he wants to continue to sell out the new arena, he's going to have to pay that luxury tax while this core is still in the window for winning championships.

Cap space is overrated when you have the type of run they've had over the last 3 years.

Yeah but apparently a lot of owners are reluctant to pay the repeater luxury tax.

Paul Allen is one of the richest person in the world and supposedly the Trailblazers will be looking to move some of their bad contracts.

It's not known if Ballmer will give out two max contracts to CP3 and Blake, though they may have no choice if they don't want to fall out of the top 4 seeds.

There were articles that the Warriors could be paying $2-3 billion in salaries and luxury taxes over the next few years. That might be pretty tough if it turns out that way.

However, the Warriors have among the highest ticket prices at old ratty Oracle and they are expecting to raise them more when Chase Center opens after next season.

The Warriors are in Silicon Valley making all kinds of business deals with those rich people.

Remember California is like the 4th largest economy in the world.

Yeah but the rank and file of the tech industry are engineers between 25 and 35, often Indian or Asian, who did not grow up with traditional US team sports.

They're almost more likely to watch extreme sports as they are to watch NBA or NFL. That's if they're watching any kind of sports at all.

They make good money but they're not the ones who are filling up Oracle Arena.

When they move to San Francisco, the Warriors will be much closer to where tech industry workers work and live. I'm not sure how they'll handle existing season ticket holders. If they do it like the 49ers where they have to pay some kind of a hefty PSL, then having been a season ticket holders for 20-30 years won't mean anything. Many of them aren't going to cross the bridge to go to games.

I don't think the 49ers are drawing a lot of tech industry workers either, though it doesn't help that the team has been awful since moving into Levis.

If they attract people from the tech industry, it will more likely be people working in the business units, who are making a lot of money and they don't really care that much about sports but will buy tickets to make the scene. That to some extent is what happened with the 49ers -- the crowd isn't as loud, though they haven't had a lot of reasons to be.

Man, he wasn't talking about the fans being loaded - he was talking about the franchise.

But the franchise needs people to buy tickets and jerseys to have the money for the payroll and the luxury tax.

I heard Lacob wasn't a billionaire when he bought the team. He might be now, especially since the value of the franchise has appreciated.

If he's going to pay $200-300 million in payroll and luxury taxes in 3 years, he needs that new arena to be packed with people willing to buy expensive tickets.

And during the offseason, getting a lot of concerts and other events from all the other venues in the Bay Area.

If they can keep this core together they'll have no problems filling the arena and selling merchandise.
