Let me ask you a simple question.

Do you deny the existence of a conceivable situation where you reacting violently could potentially place your family at risk for greater harm?

If yes, you must not have much life experience and/or don't pay attention to many news reports.

If no, are you then so confident in your "fighting" abilities that you could take down any man or group of men that spills beer on or insults your family, alone, while the family sits in the corner, untouched? That's delusional.
I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

Oversimplification is the escape of men who want to avoid the duty demanded by true understanding.

Well, I would argue that the other threads focus on the specificity of the attacks/fight/happenings itself, while this thread focused on the hypocrisy of some posters, and what mindset would lead to such hypocrisy, if, in fact, it exists. In that sense, the discussion of potential personal responses in the face of personal or familial harm is relevant, since many tend to classify Artest's response as "natural" and in accordance with what many of us would do.

Thats what I was trying to say. I didnt say anything about a mob of people coming up to you while you're out with your family and throwing a drink on you. Someone said that what if somebody came up to you and threw a drink in your face while you're eating with your family. He said he would walk away. I would not. I said what if they threw it on your wife your kid. He said he would walk away. I would not. Thats him and this is me. Thats it.

Yeah but you can't really compare the two. Going over the top and then beating up fans cussing, yelling, booing you and then THROWING things like a cup full of beer at you is different than going out with your family, having a good time laughing with your children, and then some guy throws a beer at you. In Artest's situation, he already had built up anger. Even though his foul against Wallace was hard, Wallaced shoved him as hard as he could, and Artest, we know he's an intense player and short-temepered, he's able to RESTRAIN himself. Think about it, Artest wants to beat the living crap out of Wallace now and he doesn't. Instead, he goes to the scorers table, and he's probably trying to shake off some of the anger, and so while he's attempting to keep his cool, some IDIOT fan throws something at him, escalating an already tense situation. Artest probably felt, he was trying his absolute hardest to not retaliate against Ben Wallace, and then now a fan just throws a cup of beer at him. Where do you think all that restraint went with that new rush of anger?? It's very hard to keep yourself cool when you're already trying your hardest too, and then someone else does something to you that just angers you. There's only so much restraint thats humanly possible, and no one can say "oh in that situation i'd do this or that" because they weren't in that situation, and they weren't the one having stuff done to them.

You have to look at the fight as a progressing event. Artest was already pumped up becuase of the game, fans cussing and heckling him, and his little fighting he had with Wallace, and then to cap it off the beer-throwing. Up until someone had thrown the beer, Artest exhibited a lot of composure.

And just because these guys are professionals, doesn't mean they aren't human. You can't throw things at these guys and disrespect them like that. They're human, even "professionals" are prone to human emotions. The fans were way out of line, and if no one had thrown that beer at Artest, the game would have been finished, and no one would have been suspended.
