Regarding Byrie-
The Celtics locker room is quiet. Seemingly every night, according to reports.
The chemistry problems are evident on the court, particularly defensively, as the Celtics have dropped 5-of-6 out of the All-Star break. The issues may start with the guy at the top of the pecking order,*Kyrie Irving,*according to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer.
Sources around the team told me that Irving’s persona has changed, too: He’s become disengaged and detached from those around the team. There is talk that Irving’s friendships on the team start and end with Tatum, with whom he shares an agent. Two sources peg Irving’s change in demeanor to early February, around the time he was asked about the possibility of joining the New York Knicks next season. That’s when Irving infamously said he’d make the best decision for his family and that*he didn’t “owe anybody s***.”Comment

Shoot, why would anybody trust him to get an upgrade in the coaching hire? He’s done nothing worthy of praise since he got there.
We credit Ingram for his game improving and developing(so far)same with Kuzma and with Ball(on the defensive end but he wasn’t drafted to be a rich man’s Tony Allen)but wasn’t the reason Walton was hired was so he could help the develop the young talent? If so, he’s done his part on this end.
Who says the next coach will put an emphasis on developing young talent? So far, it’s looking like Magic overplayed his hand since he’s been in charge because if his name was Melvin Johnson, he’d be gone too.
Luke wont get credit for developing anyone even though he did, but I guess the Lakers hate development but are quick to call people trash.
Don't forget Randle was coming along as wellComment

Can't call Magic a failure yet. The plan was to complete this squad next year.
If you don't want to give Magic credit for signing LeBron, then you can't hold it against him for missing out on marquee FAs this past offseason. PG13 didn't even give him a meeting; how is that Magic's fault? Who else was there for him to sign that was worth not preserving max-space for 2019?
Maybe I'm being naive but all the guys the Lakers signed to 1 year deals were 1 year deals for a reason; they are not part of the long-term plan. Since they whiffed on PG13, they tried for LeBron + Kawhi. SA refused to deal with the Lakers; again, is that really Magic's fault? Pops has hated LAL long before Magic became president.
And y'all act like there were all these FAs they could've signed but didn't, yet I'm not seeing those guys, especially because it's all about preserving cap space for the absolutely star-studded 2019 FA class. This past summer's FA class outside of LeBron and PG13 was very meh. Why would Magic settle instead of swinging for the fences with all those potential HR hits this coming summer? KD, Kawhi, Kyrie, Jimmy, Klay, Kemba, Boogie, etc. You gotta take your chances with one of those guys.
So they ended up with a bunch of non-shooters on 1 year deals. I can see not signing Brook Lopez back as a whiff on Magic's part but at the same time, he's a liability on D and doesn't rebound the ball well. Would Brook even play against teams like GS and Hou?
Get back to me in September 2019. I expect another big name on the squad and better players that aren't just on 1 year deals. If Magic fails to do that, which is his plan, then yes you can deem him a failure. I think people's expectations just got out of wack this year (myself included) because LeBron is on the team.Last edited by cima; 03-04-2019, 06:04 PM.Comment

Spoilered for those tired of Laker Talk 24/7
Spoiler
No disrespect, but you just became a “Lakers” fan in the last 8-9 months so your opinion on Magic/Rob is going to be a bit....skewed, in the sense that you’re only going to count/focus on what he’s done since you became a fan. Which is fair because why would you give a damn about what he did/done/hasn’t done/said since you jumped on that squad?
If YOU want to wait until your deadline to judge him, then that’s fine, but that still doesn’t disregard or ignore the fact that as of now and based on the available evidence we have since he’s been there, he’s done nothing to suggest getting even a little bit of credit for his moves.
He’s talked a good game since Day 1 and hasn’t backed it up since and thrown guys under the bus about THEIR job performance but so far, his job performance hasn’t been any better. So if you want to say that folks have high expectations or whatever, it’s because HE raised those expectations, not the fans when he was hired.
He opened his mouth when he was hired and told folks “We’re going to get all the stars here since most of them already live here in the offseason and we’re going to bring back the Showtime Era!”. That was all him, not the fans. He thought he could do a better job than Mitch(hence him interviewing for his job while he was still in charge)and get the “Lakers back to greatness” faster than Mitch was doing.
Any other GM that lets Top 3 picks walk in back to back years would’ve been fired real soon if all they had to show for was a Lakers team with Lebron James was mediocre play and sitting in 11th place with less than a quarter of the season to go.
Oh and those same players they signed on 1 year deals this past offseason when they built this flawed roster...if NO would’ve took that reported deal and acquired all of LA’s young players, those 1 year Vets would still be in the rotation and it’s probably a good chance that some of them would’ve came back for the following year.

SpoilerHe's been in charge for what, 2 off-seasons? In those 2 off-seasons he cleared cap space and signed LeBron James. Narratives change but the narrative not that long ago was "LeBron wouldn't have come unless the Lakers hired Magic to clean up that organization". Now all of a sudden it's become "LeBron was coming to LA anyway". *shrugs*
Now another popular narrative has become "no FA is going to LA to play with LeBron" or "no FA wants to play with LeBron in LA". Well when has any FA directly talked about where they are headed? Almost never. A year ago today nobody on this board or anywhere else on the net really thought LeBron was going to be a Laker but here we are. So why write off someone else already?
And what top 3 picks did he let walk back to back? Randle walked (he was 7th pick) but I don't recall anyone else walking. Regardless, even before I followed what LA was doing more closely, it seemed pretty clear that he was shooting for a big 2018 with a big 2019 as the backup plan. So 2018 didn't go according to plan with PG13 + another big name. But he did get the other big name (LeBron) and now he's got another shot in 2019. If that doesn't happen? Then yeah I'd say he failed. But if he succeeds and LA wins just one title in his 4 year contract, then it will be deemed a success and everyone will forget the other years prior.Comment

Re: 2/26 - 3/4 Games Discussion Thread
I disagree. You’re not challenging for a title with just AD and LBJ no matter how great both guys are. Still need a 3rd option, role guys, and a bench for that can happen. Nothing the Lakers could have done made them a serious contender this year.Comment

Re: 2/26 - 3/4 Games Discussion Thread
Yeah, but they're so sure AD wants to go there, why not keep the young bucks for now, and then sign him in 2 years? They trade for AD now and they wouldn't have HAD any role players, or a bench, lol.Comment

Because in two years LeBron is that much older. And two years is an eternity in NBA years. A lot can change. You team up the two now, and wait for the others pieces to follow. The thinking is guys are gonna want to play alongside them.Comment

I remember I started calling him Byrie when he got up during the championship parade and said something like “real talk on souls on big Bs” and Ty used to call him blood all the time. I’m sure there was another big example too. It actually became a bit of a meme with Cavs fans for a while too.
It just makes me laugh imagining that Kyrie became disillusioned with the Celtics rosters when their slogan for the playoffs last year was ‘C us rise’
