Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
I guess I'm a bit confused on the timing aspect of all this. DLo's contract is up this year, is there any sort of rule that says he has to be signed or renounced first? Like before signing other free agents? Because if not couldn't they sign their two guys and then offer DLo his new deal using bird rights?
He has a cap hold of $21 million. If they renounce the cap hold then they can’t go over the cap to re-sign him and therefore can’t sign him in addition to two max guys.

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
I was missing the part that he had a cap hold, didn't assume that was going to effect their available cap since he will no longer be under contract and signing a new contract..
So how is that any different than having a team option? He's no longer under contract but has a cap hold that prevents them from using money that could theoretically end up being bird rights?
Need to take that out with the next CBA.Comment

Looks like it’s a legit 1st round coming to Atlanta lottery protected for 20,21 and 22. It becomes two 2nd after 22 (per Zach Lowe)

It’s not a team option because they can’t keep him for $21 million if they so choose.
The cap holds are there specifically for the purpose that you’re saying it needs to be taken out for. If there were no cap holds, a team could line up all of their contracts so that they have bird rights for their entire roster and also have the full $109 million salary cap available to sign free agents. So in a world without cap holds, the Warriors could theoretically have lined things up so they could sign Kawhi, Kyrie, and Butler and then re-sign KD, Steph, Klay, and Draymond if they wanted to.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.Comment

Nets and Cavs sure would make a lot of sense. Cavs need a lot of youth to rebuild and the Nets need to get one of the top prospects in this draft.
5 for 8 and 17 or something along those lines would make me very happy.Too Old To Game Club

I also think maybe Atlanta tries to use the 3 2nds and cap space to move up a few spots. I still wouldn’t rule out a trade down.Retro Redemption - Starting over with a oldschool PowerBone Offense

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
But for a player who hasn’t already earned a max deal it seems a bit unfair to teams who want to keep young players have to use so much to retain them.
I worded my other post a bit weird. I didn’t mean that there shouldn’t be cap holds period, I was more so looking at it along the lines of a player who made 7 mil this year is going have a cap hold of 20 something mil.
