    NBA Off Topic Thread

I would have taken issue with it too, it was a silly comment to make in the midst of celebrating your own accomplishment….and after many of those same players sent congratulations your way.

      Re: NBA Off Topic Thread

I've always felt that calling the NBA champions "World Champions" sounded corny as hell given it's just the champion of one league.. I get it, all the best players are in America playing in the NBA and if there was an actual "world championship" they would win it every year.. But it still sounds funny.

I know the MLB has a "World Series Champion" but that's the name of the entire playoffs. It's a series, hence why it's called the "World Series". The champion is still just called a champion with the series name in front of it. The NBA has the playoffs that they just call the playoffs, winner is crowned the NBA/League Champion. Nowhere is World referenced other then when someone randomly calls them a world champion after the fact. You don't see/hear that much anymore though.

Regardless I can't tell really how serious Lyles was about his comments towards the NBA or if he just used them as an example to the point he was making. Seems like he's campaigning for a world championship to get more recognition and promotion and the NBA just so happened to be an easy example.

It's a silly thing to bring up in the context of it all, he didn't really need to mention the NBA (or any league) to make his point, and to counter his point in most instances NBA champions aren't referred to as world champions anyways. But.... I felt like it was even more silly that the players took issue with it. Why they let THAT get them in their feels just seems like they must all be too bored because it's the off-season. He's not really dogging the league or any of the players, just the misuse of the terminology.

That last part is exactly what it is and seeing fans(on Twitter) get so upset by it as well is even more hilarious. Like why does that bother YOU? Lol

Throwing a whole fit because of what a Track star said about another sport. He didn’t minimize anyone’s accolades or say their rings don’t weigh as much as others(like NBA Fans love to do). Thank goodness Football is about to start back up soon

"Annnnnnd nowwwwww the starting lineup for your NBA Champion Chicago Bulls!!"

Yeah doesn't sound as good as Ray Clay saying "World Champion."

Why the hell is this even a discussion honestly? This is like complaining that every professional wrestling company on the planet has a "World Champion." It's marketing/branding you want your league/company to be looked at as the best and so you brand it as such.

'Come to McDonald's we have a hamburger we think is really great. But not the best in the world cause there's other hamburger companies out there.'

Folks that sit around worried about stuff like this are the same ones watching movies pointing how unrealistic the science of something miniscule in the movie is. Just watch the movie bro, you don't have to dissect every second of it.

Like Pack always says, the NBA always got to manufacture that drama. How so many players got triggered by that, and that developed into NBA Radio discussions, ESPN segments, etc is just goofy ****.

I mean Aaron Gordon said he would beat him in the 200m, I don’t know if they’re necessarily losing sleep…

It’s just odd to use the biggest day of your life to get up there and yell “World Champions of what!?” It just didn’t hit like he thought it would.

It was odd of him in particular to bring it up and it’s odd as hell for players to feel any type of way about it.

I chalk all this up to being the dead time of the NBA Off-season since there’s nothing else to talk about.

A dude just accomplished the biggest achievement of his life and went at the NBA that had absolutely nothing to do with anything going on with him and the NBA players are triggered?

The comments made the rounds on social media and players responded. What exactly were they supposed to be doing just act like nothing happened? They inevitably would be asked about it by reporters on media day in a few weeks. They gonna be "triggered" for giving their thoughts on the comments then too?

The NBA and sports media definitely is guilty of manufactoring drama in a lot of instances, this is not one of those instances. Dude brings up NBA out of left field giving an opinion that absolutely nobody on earth asks him for and the NBA is taking the blame for "manufacturing drama" and this being the dead time of the offseason like they're responsible for this? This is an L take on you and Pack's part OJ.

He didn't have to mention the NBA at all 100%, but I still think he was just using them as an example. He was answering questions around growing the awareness of their sport and making it a bigger deal. The NBA was probably just the easiest example of players calling themselves "World Champions" and promoting that as such and getting attention for that where it isn't technically true.

They were absolutely triggered by it. And sure they have every right to give their thoughts but none of them actually gave any thoughts. They responded like little kids with facepalm emojis, #sucka****, "help this brother", etc. They could have given a somewhat thoughtful response, something like "He's right but the best players are in the NBA and therefor the champion is the best team in the World".. But they didn't.

And the larger point here is he also isn't wrong. They can give whatever thoughts they want but they are still going to be wrong. They aren't competing globally, it's a national league. Like JPosse said it's basically arguing semantics but it's still true. If team USA wins FIBA then that group is the world champs. The Denver Nuggets are not world champs. It's that simple. Why they are so bothered by that is beyond me. Pop's been saying this for a decade, others have echoed the same, and that's probably a large reason we rarely see NBA teams referred to as that like they used to.

I'm honestly not so sure a reporter would have ever asked them about it, or this became a thing on NBA radio and ESPN had players not responded first. What would a reporter even ask? "Did you see the dude who said NBA champs aren't World Champs?".... They aren't lol. It's silly, the whole thing is silly.

I agree, he 100% didn't have to bring up the NBA. He could have made his point without ever doing that, and even if he needed to make a comparison he could have left it more broad and referenced all sports that do this rather than just use the NBA.

But this whole thing shoulda just been an eye-roll at the dude and move on. Getting all upset over THIS, and having hour long radio and TV segments arguing with him over something you can't even win an argument about because you're technically wrong? That's just pointless silly ****. It's like saying that dude is a fool for saying that so how about we just all act like fools.

But yeah this is still too much drama over nothing. It's gotten more attention than the actual team we have playing for a World Championship is getting right now, which is exactly what Pack always says. Was it completely "manufactured" probably not because Lyles started it, but the NBA side is definitely what blew it up after the fact and the ones pushing it for attention and clicks making it a big deal... They'll promote drama over the product itself and this is just another example of that. And that is one thing the NBA does better than anybody, so maybe they are the world champs at that lol.

Only thing good to come of all this is people stopped talking about "is Steph Curry in the best PG ever conversation since he also plays a lot like a SG". 14 straight segments of Eddie Johnson telling everyone that Steph isn't a point guard needed to die, and at least this killed that talk for a bit.

Nahh, that has died down a lot and you almost never see it promoted as that directly from the NBA anymore. It used to be literally printed on the banners lol. Was printed on the Lakers one recently to match all their others, and the Raptors too. I think a lot of that died when Pop called them out years ago though. None of the Spurs/Warriors banners say "World", the Bulls at least says "NBA World".

I stay away from that off season bait [emoji23].

I just thought Noah Lyles comments were interesting from the point of "Wait ... What?... You just won the 100, 200 and 4X100. Why?!".

I've also been watching FIBA in the morning.

I already don't like the idea of the inseason tournament. Lets pray he doesn't decide to have a world cup too.
