    Official San Antonio Spurs Thread

C'mon guys, I know we have a few Spurs fans on here, so let's get a thread going!

I think I'm going to finally get NBA League Pass after depriving myself of it for so long, so I'll be able to finally see pretty much every game. I have no idea why I didn't get it sooner.

That was a really nice win over the Pacers last night and Timmy and Manu played very nicely. It was nice to see how dominate they both were. Tony struggled with his shooting a bit, but overall he still did fine.

Does anyone know why the Spurs signed Austin Croshere to a 10 day contract? What was the point of that? And do you think he will get resigned thereafter? I saw him play a bit in mopup duty against the Pacers and he didn't exactly impress me, missing all three shots from the field. We'll see, though.

I have no idea. We already have a big who can shoot the ball in Bonner and we got Thomas and Oberto backing him up.

The center position has always been rather unsettled ever since David Robinson retired, but the Spurs have still managed two championships in five years without him, so it's not killing the team or anything. I must admit, though, that Bonner is filling the role quite well. He's not a dominating big man and isn't a great rebounder, but he hustles and makes some pretty big shots when he's on. A lot of times we have three three-point shooters out there, so it's really hard to double-team Timmy down low since someone's bound to be open on the perimeter if you do that. And then Tony can nail the mid-range J if he's open, so having another shooter in the lineup really opens up things. At least we have someone who can score at center now because Oberto is pretty terrible on offense and Thomas isn't too good either, though he can nail the open mid-range jumper.

I think you nailed it as far as why they signed Croshere, superjames. Just having an extra guy out there who can shoot three's helps with spacing for the big three.

I've noticed in the past few years the Spurs tried to achieve four shooters around TD by playing small ball. But that had them getting pummeled on the boards so this is where guys like Croshere and Bonner can help.

Plus against the Lakers it should help with keeping one of Gasol/Bynum from clogging the paint.

Basically I guess he's around as Bonner insurance/Tolliver replacement. Too bad for him he's shooting as bad as Tolliver did.

I agree with you 24th about making a move. Thing is it looks like they're gearing themselves up for a run at the 2010 FA class so taking on a big/long contract might not be something they're willing to do.

Apparently, LOL. Manu even had to dribble it off his foot at the end, but luckily there was only 0.2 seconds left.

A win is a win, but Manu struggled most of the night and Tony had a bad first half, but had a great third quarter. Timmy was great, though, and that was the difference.

I hate that the Spurs struggled like that at home to sub-.500 New Jersey when they have the Lakers in Los Angeles this Sunday afternoon.

I don't think we're going to from the looks of it. I don't know who we'd exactly want. I'd sort of like someone down low, but Bonner has done alright there and we we've won two championships with centers worse than Bonner.

That was a nice road win tonight. Bonner was absolutely on fire from beyond the arc and Duncan and Parker were doing well. Manu couldn't hit a shot, but he was stellar from the charity stripe.

There were some strange calls in that game, though; I don't think it was very well officiated.

Big game tonight against New Orleans. That should be a good one.

Maybe Manu can go 18/18 from the free throw line tonight! He has went 29/30 from the free throw line in his last two games. I know he mentioned that he needed to start to get to the free throw line more and I'd say that he's accomplished that over the last two games, as he has shot an average of 15 free throws during that two game stretch. Now if he can only get the rest of his game going. His ankle seems to be getting better as he seems to be a bit more explosive now.

That dunk on Armstrong was vicious.

The Spurs could be in real trouble if they don't get some more size. Teams are BIG out west and BIGGER in the East when you look at the 3 potential finalists. They are going to have a real tough time against the top four teams with Bonner out there. Thomas is getting too old to be banging with these big, young guys. Duncan looks all alone down there sometimes.

I do agree with you Born, the Spurs will need another big if they want to win it all, but I think you're underselling the value of Matt Bonner and Kurt Thomas. Both of them serve an important purpose that the team needs to win a title, Bonner provides three-point shooting that spaces the floor and Kurt is still a rugid defender and rebounder (look at his perfomance against West tonight), but the team is missing a 4th big that can finish inside and block shots. Sadly, we lost out on bringing Tiago Splitter over from Europe and Ian Mahinmi's been suffering from an ankle injury that has cost him virtually the entire season. Hopefully, the team can find a way to bring in another player and keep most of what they have that works.

I think we'll be fine. I agree that it would be beneficial to get another big man, but I really don't want to trade anyone on this team away and I just don't know what we'd get in return. Thomas is a pretty good rebounder and can knock down the mid-range J. Bonner has been on fire lately and is just shooting lights-out. Our only real threat to post up is Duncan, but he's about as good as they come.

I don't think the Spurs need help on the post up, and offensively I think the smaller bodies only hurt in terms of rebounding, but understand that I say what I say only in the context of the specific matchups that stand in the way of the Spurs and another ring.

With Gasol, Bynum, West, Chandler, Garnett, Perkins, Lewis and Howard, the Spurs are in a situation where whoever Tim is guarding will keep him away from the basket, and the Spurs won't have an intimidator on the other side to stop pick and roll penetration. In the event that Tim guards the bigger player, the shooting big men(Gasol, West, Garnett, Z) will have an easier time scoring, and will put Tim in a situation of coming over for help. When they had two big bodies in there, it was very hard to score in the paint on the Spurs.

The Spurs' defense will be good, but it needs to be great on the interior to beat those teams, and the Hornets. I agree that it can *possibly* happen, but the chances are very slim with the lineup they have, because all of those teams are fielding dual 7 footers who are also skilled. That's rough.
