I like the sticks even though I'm not very good at them. I just wish the punches were a little farther apart. My controllers (XBox 360) have very loose sticks, and the difference between a hook and an uppercut isn't much at all. It isn't very forgiving.

Re: Right Stick Punching is horrid
a few days ago when I first got the game I would have been heavily in the same opinion as the OP. But the more I play the easier and better the controls are. I can use the stick with full command now and I have no problems with the system and actually really like it.
What clicked for me and made the game a million times better was just chilling out a bit. You have to calm down and back off the mashing and wrenching on the stick. Use combos that are so natural feeling that they become second nature.
There is nothing hard about throwin a jab jab hook to the body and getting away or any other combo . It also works awesome with the blocking on the right stick and leaning on the other, I can really get good angles and cover up a barrage from my opponent and then immediately launch my own barrage back when he is open and drained making his blocks weak.
I hereby endorse the stick system and say if you insist on button mashing maybe try ebay for an atari 2600. It just has the real big single button and surely will suffice your needs.Comment

Re: Right Stick Punching is horrid
I wonder how many people that LOVE the sticks are on PS3? And I wonder how many people that NEED buttons are on 360?
Because I got a chance to play the PS3 version last night for a few minutes - the sticks are INFINITELY better on the PS3. And I mean NIGHT AND DAY.Recovering slider addict...Fight Night Round 4 caused me to relapse...Comment

Re: Right Stick Punching is horrid
I am on 360. I HATE the PS3 controller so I only buy certain titles for my PS3. The shape of the ps3 controller is just unnatural. The way the wings on the 360 controller cuver to the contour of your hand is much more comfortable.Comment

Re: Right Stick Punching is horrid
I figured this out from playing the demos. The PS3 analog is loose and easier to move around while the 360 analog was stiff. I can understand why some people were saying the things they were saying depending on which controller they were using.Comment

Re: Right Stick Punching is horrid
I was never in the camp that thought RS punching was "horrid" but I thought it could be better. But I don't know anymore. It's REALLY intuitive, its starting to just feel right for me. I love how easy it is to go from defense from offense and still use the right stick. I'm having no problems getting off my patented jab, right body hook, left head hook combo in this game.
I think I will still give button punching a shot once the DLC drops, but by that time the RS punching may be too ingrained in me at the rate I've been playing. This game is really the bees knees and the cats pajamas.Comment

Re: Right Stick Punching is horrid
The controls are fine. Survival of the fittest says that those that adapt will survive. those that don't will expire. The only punch I haven't fully mastered is uppercuts, but the video game should require stick-skill as much as it requires boxing strategy.fool me once... shame on me.

I'm not a big fan of the PS3 controller either, despite having small hands. But the accuracy of my punches was noticably different in just the few minutes I played.Recovering slider addict...Fight Night Round 4 caused me to relapse...Comment

Re: Right Stick Punching is horrid
I've used the sticks since they were introduced, but I always had problems delivering hooks & uppercuts at will. I got better the more I played, but it was never 100%. I think it should be 100%.
I'd like the sticks more if throwing hooks & uppercuts didn't require the looping motion. If I could tap the sticks to side for a hook, for example, and throw it as easily as a jab, I'd be cool. Same for uppercuts... down, on an angle, without the swoop back up would be ideal for me.
For those concerned about slugfests, the punching controls are not the issue. Footwork, blocking & stamina are the culprits. Connecting with a punch is not difficult because punches are hard to throw. Connecting is difficult because the other boxer can defend himself by moving & blocking. Fix those and slugfest become a thing of the past, unless you want to slug of course.Shout out to The Watcher! Where you at bruh?Comment

Re: Right Stick Punching is horrid
I disagree with this somewhat. In a simulation, I think things that are hard to do IRL should be hard to do in-game. A punch is not hard to throw. I think that should be reflected in the controls.

Re: Right Stick Punching is horrid
That being said, if the game should REQUIRE stick skill, then throw out boxer ratings and forget sim. Make it Tekken and be done with it. Don't tell us it's a boxing sim if it's going to be dependent on the player's skill with a controller.Recovering slider addict...Fight Night Round 4 caused me to relapse...Comment
