As far as boxing being unpopular in the US, yes maybe so, but in other countries it's about as mainstream as the NFL is here.
One of the reasons I think boxing is frowned upon here is because of the heavy emphasis put on head injuries and how we look at past boxers with a "you want to talk like that" type attitude. When I was younger I took both boxing and wrestling. My parents put the encouragement on wrestling over boxing because of fear I'd get brain damage. I'm not joking about it...I seriously think this is a main reason we don't see it promoted here as much.
