Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Yeah, Easter made it interesting for a while although I don't think he was doing as well as Berstein stated earlier in the fight. Mikey was doing all of the hurting with precision power punching many times breaking through the guard. There were a couple of later rounds that were close to 10-8's for Garcia.
As for facing Spence....I don't know....Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Yup. Very good entertaining fight. Easter has a very good chin and it was nice to see that he is the complete opposite of boner. I dont think Spence is the right move for Mickey. At least go for a smaller 147er first and ease your way in. I think Spence handles him rather easy.

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Random thoughts on the recent bouts, most of which have been covered already in this thread...
- Jaime Munguia is a big, strong kid, but he's effectively a cruiserweight campaigning at super welterweight. Once again proving that the most valuable ability in boxing today is not speed or technique, it's the ability to lose/gain massive amounts of weight quickly. I'm personally tired of this farce, and I'd like to see boxing go back to same-day weigh-ins. There's no evidence that day-before weigh-ins are any safer, and if anything, it's potentially more dangerous because you're putting guys into the ring that aren't even in the same weight class. There's no reason a guy should have a functional 10 or 15+ pound weight advantage in a fight; it completely obviates the point of having weight classes in the first place.
- Mikey Garcia has been one of the best pound-for-pound fighters for a long time now, and there's no one at lightweight or below that can challenge him. The fights are all at 140 and increasingly, 147, which is too bad because that seems like just a bit above where his natural 'best' fighting weight is. It seems crazy to me that he wants to go up 2 weight classes and fight the best in the division as his very first welterweight bout, but if that's what he wants to do...so be it. I'm constantly complaining that people don't fight each other in their primes, so I guess I can't blame a guy for wanting the best.
I like Mikey. He's been one of my favorite fighters for quite some time now, so I want to see him keep challenging himself.
- Did anyone happen to see the Thomas Mattice v. Zhora Hamazaryan fight from "ShoBox: The New Generation" a few weeks back? By far one of the worst decisions I've ever seen, bordering on Olympics-level shenanigans by the judges. It's obvious the promotional interests really needed Mattice to win, and made it happen in highly hilarious fashion. If you missed the "fight", it consisted of Hamazaryan knocking down Mattice in the early rounds (nearly knocking him out), nearly knocking him down on several occasions later in the fight, and essentially dominating every round beyond any serious doubt. Hamazaryan did not get the decision.
Mattice looks genuinely confused for a brief second when they announced his name as the winner. If this wasn't a nationally televised fight, they could probably have gotten away with it. Heck, they probably will get away with it anyway. But this one is just so bad, it's going to follow the fighter around (rightly or wrongly) for the rest of his career. Which I suspect won't be very long and/or distinguished, based on what I saw on a prospect-undercard bout...Comment

By the way, the "historic" fights I referenced happened under the "same day" weigh-in era (Leonard-Duran 1) and the "day before" weigh-in era (Mosley-De La Hoya 1).
Lomachenko might have something to say about not being able to beat Mikey but that's another story.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
The 135 to 147 successful jump has been done before most notably by Duran (against Leonard) and Shane Mosley (against Oscar), but there was no overwhelming size advantage enjoyed by the smaller man (in fact Duran looked fuller and stronger than Leonard). Against Spence that would not be the case.

Touche. Notable oversight on my part. I suppose I meant of the fights that can actually be made right now....Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Roy Jones calls it "high on the chin" better known as the temple.
EDIT: Kovalez appeared tired as Alvarez landed a windup right hand through a very lazy defense.
The "Krusher's" promoter Kathy Duva tried to do some damage control, but mostly highlighted a problem that might lead to an early retirement:
“Sergey seems to gas out after six rounds, He was great for six rounds and then he faltered. I assumed he got tired.”Last edited by JayBee74; 08-05-2018, 01:52 AM.Comment
