The undercard was trash and they fed a lamb to David Morrell (How often does a pretty good fighter with no punch get eradicated by an elite bomber?) but there was a lot of electricity in the air for the Main event. I thought it was a fight of high tension and although the punch output was dialed back you had two knockdowns and some good potshoting from Tank. It wasn’t Foreman-Lyle but I was entertained.

Why did Garcia ignore Goosen's advice after round 1?
Garcia was great working the jab, moving in and out and picking his shots. He was using his natural advantage of height and reach.
Then he goes into the trenches for Round 2. He was actually doing well and I think he was hurting Tank but then got caught with that big shot and the fight changed.
Tank is great. Love his style and he has crazy, show-stopping power. Can't wait to watch him again.
Saying that, I do believe Garcia was somewhat affected by the rehydration clause. But mostly, I think his inexperience showed. An experienced fighter would have continued to use his reach to pick his smaller opponent apart.
This is why Garcia should have ramped up his opposition a bit more before taking on Tank.
I expect him to learn from this and I hope he does well at 140.
I'm really happy that we saw two young, undefeated, highly touted fighters risk their 0's. The sport needs way more of that.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
It’s just hard to really enjoy a slower paced fight when the dudes are 140lbs IMO. I can watch heavyweights do that, but these little dudes knowing 99% of the shots aren’t going to do anything anyways can be a snore without volume.. Was expected to an extent, but even Tank felt like he was punching at about 1/2 of his normal output.
Good knockdown, a few more decent shots from each guy, but that was about it.
I’m just glad that after the fight they showed a bit more of their true personalities. All this fake trash talk back and forth leading up to the fight felt so forced and fake over the past few weeks.
Overall I had no interest in the undercards as the NBA playoffs were also on. So I basically bought the fight just for the main event, and other than it being big names it was just kinda mehh.Comment

But again, it's just a personal preference to me and I can see how folks wouldn't like that. Part of the reason why I don't like MMA. I respect those fighters but I love the science of the sport.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Gervonta Davis is talented and it's fun to watch knockouts. But that fight was mostly boring to me.
I generally hate counter-punchers because they can only really be involved in a good fight if their opponent brings the heat. I say this as someone that likes to watch boxing as entertainment, not a deep appreciator of the sweet science. I understand and respect what master craftsmen like Floyd or Pernell Whitaker did, but for the most part, if they were fighting in my backyard, I wouldn't even open up the blinds to watch.
I want to see firefights. I would rather watch Alfredo Angulo or Leo Santa Cruz fight a random bum in an alley than watch Erislandy Lara or Guillermo Rigondeaux fight in Madison Square Garden. It's been forever since I've seen a fight that truly excited me, and we seem to be in an era (hopefully a short-lived one) of fighters who grew up worshipping Mayweather. I'd rather Pacquiao be their patron saint, for the sake of entertainment, but boxing being the moronic mess that it is, the (vanishingly) few fights that would be of interest and potentially high entertainment value can't or won't be made any time soon.
C'est la vie.Comment

IDK OJ... Fighters like Tank and Garcia are the sweet spot for me. They're a combination of power, speed, footwork, etc... and they don't tire out. Tank is such a unicorn to me. A counter power puncher.

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
The BKFC is interesting.
I'm always entertained when I watch, but I feel guilty about it, lol
Rockhold quit last night because he had broken teeth.
The matches can be brutal at times.
One thing I wish the promotion had was a bit more stability.
I don't know who the champs really are and they continue signing MMA and former boxing stars (or at least notable names) to promotions - which is great and I understand why.
But I would like to see some continuity so we see these fighters more than once or twice and eventually work their way up the rankings for title shots.

If it's at 175, Canelo has zero chance. He may even get stopped.Comment

But you're right - and going in THAT is why I had Davis winning is that he is willing to gameplan and adjust and it just seems like Ryan wants to fight and assumes nature will just take it's course - but in between rounds he doesn't seem willing to actually use a strategy and make adjustments, so to me that was the key going in.
In the ACTUAL fight, there were moments I thought Ryan MIGHT be able to take Gervonta out! Rewind a few weeks to Plant vs Benavidez - Ryan actually took on part of the Benavidez role where Tank was holding and going for soft clinches and Ryan REALLY made it rough in there and landed some really big shots and (I think) hurt Tank significantly. That is where Caleb lost his way and David got the big advantage is he just said 'no' to the clinches and threw rough dangerous shots - in both fights the ref let it go (as he should) and the more this trend continues, the less 'hugger' type fighters will be able to dominate.
Ryan's other BIG mistake was ignoring history and not looking for the right cross consistently. Righy vs Righty the big left hook is there, the chin is open - once you face a southpaw it's possible you can have success with it, but now you have a shoulder in the way, and a worse angle to get it in there - very hard to hit the button. I saw him throw a few straight rights and a couple landed just at the end of his punch and if he made little adjustments to setup better and be closer ..who knows.
So in short - it wasn't an amateur vs a HOF'er lol, Tank just knows how to think in there and makes smart and appropriate adjustments. Garcia has speed, power and heart, but doesn't use his brain.
Tank has good power and timing and is a dog - as well as uses his brain, but I don't think he'll have a long career. His frame isn't ideal - he's short and a bit pudgy at this weight. Bigger, stronger guys will mandhandle him in the clinch and Stevenson for example I think would stop him. He already sounds a bit punch-drunk too, add to that his legal troubles - so I give him 3 years!
all just my opinion - but I hope the freedom in the clinch remains and trend for years - if the ref won't break it up immediately, allow the guy being held to take out his frustrations!Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment

I've seen so much online that seem like they didn't even watch the fight, including pro boxers. You had guys saying Ryan was 'elementary' and Davis was a wizard in there lol. it's enough to potentially get me to make an analysis video.

I think Garcia’s inexperience hurt him which is to be expected if we’re being honest, especially considering that Tank is in his physical prime and has more rounds under his belt.
Longevity is hard to gauge for me. Tank’s been fairly active lately which is a nice trend to see, hopefully other fighters take notice. I think his activity level, should he continue like this is what’s going to determine his longevity. He’s got some big paydays ahead of him so I think he’ll be motivated to stay sharp. Just as long as he quits the dancing on IG lol.

Agreed, this is to set up for that rematch. Though I would say that David Benavidez is a pretty strong candidate for Canelo as well after this bout.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Anyone see the Rolando Romero - Ismael Barroso fight?
Barroso winning on all 3 cards (wide margin on at least 1), had the only legitimate knockdown of the fight, and the fight gets waved off when he was never in any danger whatsoever. I would say this is the worst stoppage I've ever seen, but I think it's just as clear evidence as you'll ever have in a nationally televised fight that boxing is not on the level. Tony Weeks clearly has bills to pay; he did not make that decision based on anything that happened in the ring.
If boxing had any integrity whatsoever, 3 things would happen after that travesty:
- the result of that fight would be nullified
- immediate mandatory rematch
- Tony Weeks would receive a liftetime ban from refereeing boxing
Of course, as we all know, boxing has no integrity, so none of those things will happen.Comment

They could put in changes to review fights with questionable endings.
That quick trigger by Weeks cost a 40-year old Barroso life changing opportunities.
This is a guy who likely has been working jobs while pursuing boxing. He could have cashed in on a title bout and rode into the sunset knowing he could take care of himself and his family for the rest of his life.
Weeks robbed him of that.
I like your ideas for rectifying the results.
And I'd like to see something put in place for other erroneous decisions.
The first GGG-Alvarez fight is a great example. Everyone with a brain knew that fight wasn't a draw and GGG won at least 8 rounds.
In the 2nd fight, 97% of ringside scribes had GGG either winning or a draw.
In some cases, these decisions just reek of corruption.
It's 2023. We can figure out a way to correct these terrible decisions.
But in boxing it's like these are features not bugs.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Haney vs Lomachenko - what are you early predictions?
I literally have no idea what direction this fight will go. Haney is younger, bigger, and talented. Loma has experience, footwork, and may slightly more power. To be frank, I am not sure what father time and the stress of the Ukraine war has taken out of Loma. If I am correct he didn't look good in his last bout and ya remember the Teofomo fight.
If I was betting - Haney by split decision in an ugly and clinch filled bout. I believe Haney will get the closer rounds with fast flurry's towards the end of each round.Comment
